Think Alex Smith was glad the 49ers lost?

24 posts in this topic

I was thinking about this for almost two weeks now. If I was Alex Smith, I would have actually been glad the Ravens won just to see Jim's face afterwards. My thinking would be that I was playing the best football of my life half way through the season yet my coach who I thought had my back stabbed me in it by giving my job to Collin Kaepernick as the starter, and I was demoted to the backup QB role. Alex said that he was all about helping Kaep, but I believe what he said was BS. He had to have been fuming inside knowing what happened to him. What person in his position wouldn't have?

You can't draw conclusions like that. Backup or not, every player in this league wants a Championship ring before they retire or run out of opportunities to play. Nothing is guaranteed and you only get so many chances at being a Super Bowl Champion.

I don't think you can really call yourself a Super Bowl Champion if you're riding the pine during most (in Smith's case all) of the playoffs.

Regardless, I think Smith was happy they lost too. What happened to him was really crappy, there's that unwritten rule about not losing your job due to injury and he was having a great season. I don't think people in the NFL really want to help the guy who took or is trying to take their job. Favre didn't want to do it with Rodgers, who wasn't a real threat at the time, so it goes without saying that Smith wouldn't want to do it with Kaepernick.

I don't think so. He did contribute to their success for a large part early in the season. If I was him that would be enough for me. Winning a superbowl as a backup is a huge, because you don't know if you'll ever go to another. It's huge for anyone and everyone.

I hope Alex smith is released so he can find a starting job somewhere . i think it sucked what happened to him. I think there was some part of him that felt happy about the outcome of the superbowl. He's human even if he didn't say it publicly he's angry

I'm pretty sure Alex would be really pissed when he found out that he was demoted to back up, but I don't think he would wish his team would lose in the SB.

But I think Alex would be better than Colin who will be slaughtered in 2013 when everyone figures out he ain't good at pocket passing.....the dude throws the ball like pitching.....

I would be. I led this team to the NFC Championship on a 13-3 record. I won games for you the next year. Then I get hurt and you start this flavor of the month? Whatever happened to plain? You'd abandon your tried and true plain flavor for spicy picante? Where was spicy picante when the lights got too bright? Where was he in the red zone when you needed those points?

Now my coach and players turned their allegiance on me. The fans who once made excuses for me are now making excuses for my backup. My stock almost plummeted when it seemed like Kaepernick should've started from the get go. But now that they've lost, maybe you'll see. It should've been me the whole time.
i swear your the only other person that agrees with me on his pocket passing, I didn't see lasers,,,,I didn't see accurate throws.. yes he's fast but if that had been joe flacco with four attempts to get it in the end zone on his arm Joe would have colin would still be trying to hit crabtree.of course Alex is angry about what happened.

Crabtree, 3 in the row; it's like he hadn't had enough Crabs....

On the last play, Ed read it that he would go to Crabtree again so Ed leaned over Jimmy's side so Crabtree was double teamed anyway. Not one on one like Colin kept repeating.....

Colin is over-rated...dude sucks...we'll see in 2013

I was rooting for them since Jim on board but since the SB, I'll root to those whoever they play against to.....

Nobody is perfect, but there are things I genuinely dislike about the 49ers now, when before I was indifferent. I never really cared about Harbaugh being there, and I secretly wanted them to lose the previous NFC Championship game because I didn't want Jim to be John. You know, brotherly rival & John's older. Now I dislike Jim because of his attitude. He whines like a child. He is emotional and let's his emotions get the best of him too often. The QBs of both teams, I believe, exemplify the personalities of their respective head coaches.

Joe Flacco is indifferent of criticism, is confident but not arrogant, remains calm under pressure, and will occasionally get visibly upset but doesn't become childish. John is essentially the same. John will complain and yell and scream, but not to the extent of being childish. Flacco also puts blame on himself, not on the opponents or calls. Flacco also explains they can improve in loss.

Jim complains about losing, makes excuses for his loss rather than own it, and blames others rather than focusing on the problem. That will hold him back. I think Jim inherited an excellent team, similar as his brother. But where John succeeded I can see Jim fail. The 49ers have the best OL in football. Unquestionable, IMO.

I say this because it's emotional to have benched Smith. I don't think there was a good reason to do it. I think much of Crapernick's success came from having the best OL in football with great weapons. You can say Smith had the same advantage. He did. But he was experienced and has seen a lot of looks. I think the Niners could have given us a better run than Colin in the SB. He probably wouldn't have thrown the INT. He was very good at managing the ball.

He should go to a team with a solid OL that needs a QB. I actually think the Vikings would be perfect. I think he could win a Super Bowl there. They like Ponder, so it will never happen but if I was Minnesota I would take Smith and draft Patterson and sign a FA WR and draft another guy in the 4th round & take a TE in the 2nd or so. Build up their already really good OL more, re-sign Felton. That would essentially fix their entire offense and they can go all-out defense the rest of the way.

They wwn to contribute on the field and earn that ring. An example of this is Shockey. When the Giants won I don't think he wanted a ring cause he got hurt earlier in the season. I think he played at some point but Boss carried most of the load in the playoffs. Smith might have some hostility towards the team.

Kaep made it to the SB. If just going by production, he was equal and added more dimensions to the offense. Not only that, but Kaep is Harbaughs guy, Smith wasn't. I think Harbaugh made the right decision. Kaep was poised, has a stronger arm and can scramble. He's young and should only get better, you can't be mad at that. If Alex Smith was playing, that game would've been a blow out in the Ravens favor, if they even made it to the big game. Not only that, but I can guarantee our defense would've harassed him all day and Kruger might have walked away with 4 sacks.

Nah, I don't think he was glad. Without Alex Smith, I don't think the 49ers make it to the Superbowl. He started their first 9 games that had them 6-2-1 when he went down. Dude had a 104 season passer rating when Jimbaugh benched him for CK. Even with only 7 regular season games, you saw by the playoffs that both the Falcons and the Ravens had figured out how to start containing him and playing against that offense. You start CK those other 9 games with the pistol, give defenses almost 3 months time to see it and dissect it and I don't think they get by Atlanta if they even make it into the playoffs.

That's what I think will be the most interesting thing about next season. Now that the Ravens and Falcons have laid a starting blueprint for dealing with that offense, what will CK's sophomore year (as starter) be like?

I think Smith knows that and having an SB ring under those circumstances isn't a negative. It's not as positive as being the SB winning QB, but I bet he'd take it. Ask Dan Marino if he wishes he had one.

Kaepernick makes a couple good throws, but so does almost any quarterback who has so much time in the pocket. The read-option is a gimmick that allows him to get extra time in the pocket as well as making the running game easier.

If I was Alex Smith I'd be pissed. He was demoted. Cool, he gets a ring, but he isn't like a special teams guy or a backup who is used to that role. He was a starter playing quality football before his coach turned his back on him. It's different.

I will go as far to say that I respected Alex Smith. A fairly decent QB, playing great ball and had a hiccup getting injured and lost his job to Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, I can't stand. He comes into the league, plays some dismal defenses with a great defense on his side of the ball and has the audacity to flex and kiss his biceps? Really? I'm calling it now; regardless of his success, Kaep is going to be the next Tom Brady in terms of how he will be glorified -- and it just sickens me to death to think about it.

Back to Alex though; I'd day that a small part of him has that "told you so" smirk going on inside, but he would've much rather had the ring. He was a big part of how that team started hot out of the gate earlier in the season. Wherever he goes, I hope he lands in the AFC, just to have a shot at exacting some revenge on his former team.

Kaepernick showed a lot of promise, it's Harbaugh's guy, yeah. I agree. I think the best thing he did was add another dimension to the offense, as you said. The pistol. With that said, Smith was playing pretty well. On top of it, he was a good game manager. He did/does a good job of not turning over the football recently. Kaepernick's not so good at it. I am also not fond of the way Colin throws. I also don't agree that it would have been a blowout in our favor. He played us pretty well in 2011. He threw an INT and you are 100% right about the sacks. The pass rush really got to him, so I understand you there.

I just don't like the attitude of Jim Harbaugh at all, and I see it a lot in Colin. But it doesn't matter. I think Colin's an upgrade over Smith, personally. I just think it was in bad taste, is all.

I believe Alex Smth is saying to himself that he can't wait to be released so that he can go to another team as the starter and do everything possible to win a superbowl before the 49ers and Kaep do just to stick it to Jim. Pride is a very powerful motivator. To have won the superbowl as Kaep's backup would only reminded Alex everytime he looked at his ring that he was screwed by Jim.

So what's going to happen when the league completely figures out the read option? It's going to happen. Can Kaep survive as a pocket passer? Replacing Alex Smitih as a very dumb move on Jim's part for one reason. When Jim started the season, he had two good QB's. Now with Alex leaving, Jim is left with Kaep and an unknown backup. So what is Jim going to do if Kaep gets hurt while running the read optoin, then what? Also, why would anyone want to be a starting QB for Jim in the first place now? He's already shown that a starting QB's job isn't safe even if the QB is doing his job and winning games. Why would a QB want to have the lingering doubt from week to week whether his job is safe even when he's winning?

I don't disagree at all. I'm not a fan of CK. I think this pistol formation will quickly be figured out and stopped like the wild cat was.

Alex Smith was playing well, the 49ers are a good team. Alex would have gotten them to the playoffs. I doubt he was rooting against them, especially since he had nothing to hold his head down about. It sucked that he lost his job to a guy who had a hot hand when he was recovering from injury but it was not like he lost his job to the rookie because he was playing poorly.

On the one hand, a ring is a ring. But on the other hand, it's not like he can use that on his resume for the rest of his life, saying "I'm a Super Bowl champ" without feeling more like a chump because he didn't actually even play in the game (or in any game for the second half of the season and in the play-offs leading up to the big game). I know I couldn't brag about it. Does anybody give a crap that Dennis Dixon is a "2x Super Bowl Champion"? No, because he threw 1 pass in the regular season in 2008 (and none in the playoffs/Super Bowl) with the Steelers, and hasn't thrown a pass at all in the NFL since 2010 but won another Super Bowl with us this year. Even though he has two rings on his fingers, does anybody care? Of course not. Nobody is going to put him in the Hall of Fame discussion due his status as a "Two Time Super Bowl Champion". If I were Alex Smith, after getting benched, I'd rather my team not win than to get a ring I didn't earn. It makes me look better, too, that the team may not actually be better without me.
