Matt Ryan's contract

57 posts in this topic

Does anyone have any news on Matt Ryan's contract. It's a given, that it will have an impact on Joe Flaccos contract talks. Is Matt trying to get Drew Brees money (well I guess anybody does) ? And how likely is it, that he can get it?

Im not sure if Matt Ryan will get that much, but he'll be in the ballpark.
With all of that talent around him for the last five years... he has 1 playoff win.
As Ive always said, Ryan matured faster but Joe has the higher ceiling.
I think A Super Bowl MVP is just the beginning for Flacco.

I think Ryan has one more year on his deal and I'm guessing he's waiting to see what Flacco gets because he'll deserve far LESS...

Joe should be getting a better deal than Ryan. Joe has playoff numbers and a Superbowl MVP. Pus, you can talk about 4000 yard 30+ TD seasons for Ryan all you want, but he 1) has a fantastic offensive line, 2) has a top 5 receiving corps, 3) the teams in his division are ALL bottom-feeders when it comes to passing defense (unlike the Bengals, Steelers, and Browns, who are all top 10 passing defenses), and 4) he plays in a dome, where it's been proven over the years QB numbers go up.

Matt Ryan would die each season at the start of November if he was playing in the AFC North lol

When thinking about Matt Ryan, there are always 2 games that come to mind - 2010 he loses to the Steelers WITHOUT Roethlisberger, no TDs one interception. And 2011 at the Meadowlands vs. the Giants, couldn't even lead his team to a single offensive point - the only points they got in that game were on a safety. He looks great when he's playing Carolina and Tampa Bay, but I really think if we'd managed to trade up for him in 2008 (especially with Cam being the OC), we would have made a huge mistake.

Needs money for that hair gel. Also, do you think it will matter that his rookie deal was gigantic and significantly more than Flacco's?

Yes, Joe has been a real bargain for us. I am just asking, because I heard rumors here and there, that the Falcons might sign him and that he might be seeking that elusive 20 mill/year average. If true, we would be royally screwed (I am still hoping we get the 18 mill/year Tom Brady package).
Everyone likes picking apart Joe's regular season stats, but in the end, the thing that matters the most, is what you do in January, which is why I believe Joe would have more leverage then Ryan.
How someone can't succeed in the playoffs with a security blanket of Tony Gonzalez caliber, is beyond me. I love Pitta to death, but watching Tony play against the 49ers brought a tear to my eye. What a beast.

Matty Ice could sign an contract between 100-120 for 6 years i believe.
100 would be cool so Joe could sign an 150 deal for 8 years. 18,75 looks like a good/fair deal to me

But i also "heard" rumors sayin the Falcons & Ryan are waiting till Joe signed a new deal to give Ryan 95% the same money

It's definitely going to be vice-versa. Flacco's contract will set Ryan's contract. If Matt is smart he'll turn down any extension like Flacco did and have the balls to play for his contract.

Seriously? Right now, Matt Ryan doesn't even sniff Joe's jockstrap! I've illustrated their differences with two brief skits of what their respective agents would say to their respective owners/GMs. Behold!

Joe's agent: "SUPERBOWL MVP! 9-4 PLAYOFF RECORD! PAY HIM NAO!"
Mr. Bisciotti: "Oh! Sure sure. Pay him whatever. I'm sorry, I was too busy looking at my Superbowl Ring and Trophy."
Everyone: "AHHHHHahahahahahaha!"

Matt's agent: "He uh... got his team to #1 seed a couple of times... 'A-And?' Oh! And uh... I'm sorry, I need to speak with my client for a moment."
Big Boy Caprice: "No. Get this clown outta here, Mumbles!"
Mumbles: "Sure thing, boss!"

Not really. Flacco's contract will be higher no doubt, but they have completely different resumes as far as im concerned. Aaron Rodgers on the other hand, that is going to be a war of attrition. Both want to wait and see what the other gets to use as leverage.

Um? None of this matters. Do you honestly think Joe is as good as Drew Brees at this point in his career? No. He's great, and he'll probably get there, but today he is not. This has nothing to do with the business of contracts. Drew Brees set the market, and next Joe will. Ryan's contract, assuming he puts together another great statistical season which is a borderline guarantee with that offense, will be in the same ballpark as Joe's.

I'm hoping for a reasonable deal, too. Ozzie and company are very good at this sort of thing and we've been able to sign and retain big players before.

Matt Ryan's failings in the playoffs, despite what Falcons fans would lead you to believe, are self-inflicted and not the result of a poor defense or anything. All those weapons, little to show for it.

Remember on NFC championship? 4th down with last min of the 4th quarter, Ryan looked away from his security 3rd down target, Gonzalez who was covered by LB. If he throw the high to him, he will pull it down.

Joe, Ben, Tommy, Eli and Aaron Rodgers are built for football in December, January and February --not Matty he needs his dome

Things Drew Brees and Joe Flacco have in common:

- Super Bowl win
- Super Bowl MVP

This has everything to do with the business of contracts.

What else are you going to go on other than their track record? They're not gonna get sold on rainbows and unicorns. The only thing I agree with is that the next "big contract" will always push the limits.

But right now? Atlanta has nothing but expectations that may or may not ever come to fruition.

You can't give Matty Ice, Joe-Cool-money when he's in the Romo and Schaub level... because of his record.

I don't recall Tom or Eli having cannons. I think they're just not afraid of competition. In January, when everything is on the line, you need to be a killer and that's when those unidentifiable intangibles come into play. Everyone is talking about them, but no one really knows what it means. Tom and Eli are desperate for recognition for the same reason, because they both feel under appreciated. Eli for getting a raw deal from NY media early in his career (go figure). Tommy for being a 6th round pick. Even Rodgers, to a certain degree, can't stop talking about how he felt under appreciated all the time.
That's what makes those guys winners. They are kind of desperate to prove themselves and are not afraid to do no matter what to get it.
Character wise Joe is most like Eli. Laid back personality, can shrug off mistakes, but really competitive on the inside. Eli always playing under Peytons shadow, Joe under Rays (both Lewis and Rice). Makes sense in an odd way.

I agree, Rodger's contract could be a new high mark for QB contracts. And suddenly the market value for QBs inflates even more. Buying time with a franchise tag can work against the Ravens in a really bad way.

Word. Tony was on the bench afterwards telling anyone who would listen that he was open.

Don't even know why Ryan threw that ball. In traffic, short of the first, and he had all kinds of time.

You clearly don't understand that none of this matters to Matt Ryan or Matt Ryan's agent. Matt Ryan is the Falcon's franchise quarterback and they have no other options. He is also an NFL quarterback, a prerequisite of which is a huge ego. He will command whatever he asks for. There is no objectivity in business, only perception and leverage. Ryan will have all the leverage next year and thus will command a contract similar to Flacco's. It's quite simple.

And you clearly don't understand that this IS part of the negotiations. Arthur Blank isn't just going to hand him a blank check without using everything argument in the book. And neither is Steve Bisciotti, but Joe's got the hardware to guarantee that $20M/yr contract.

I guess we'll just have to save this thread as a "wait and see." I like the odds that Ryan gets right around the same amount of money as Joe, you think his contract will be "nowhere close." Time will tell. Bookmarked :).

If the Falcons wish to overpay Mr." I wanna be a choke artist like Romo" Ryan, so be it. No skin off my nose at all. I'm only concerned with Flacco's contract, and hope they come to a reasonable deal for both sides as we were able to do with Rice.

Well now that Tony G is gone I do expect Ryan to struggle a little bit more. Tony G was a security blanket for him and would consistently be open in the middle of the field.

Haha let's call it a 5 mil differential. If Ryan is truly a full-tier below Flacco I think that's fair. So if Flacco's making 20, Ryan would be around 15.

3 elite weapons + solid, not spectacular D that was better than Bmores during the regular season= No SB.

No ellite weapons, but all solid, + D that got hot at right time, and held its own when it matter most= Flacco SB MVP.....

Pay Flacco, this debate is over *yawn*

I felt bad for Gonzalez cuz he thought Ryan would take him to his first SB on his last year. HOF without SB...

PS: I'm so glad Ed and Boldin have their SB ring before retiring....
