He turned a defense that was missing a lot of pieces into a pretty decent one towards the end of the regular season into a Super Bowl winning defense. He really didn't have much to work with, but come playoffs he finally had Ngata, Suggs, Ray, and Reed all on the field at the same time and we all saw the defense come up in the clutch. I know the Ravens broke the record for the most yards allowed for a Super Bowl victor, but the whole "bend don't break" mentality is what was the story the whole season. 2nd best Red-zone defense in the league.

i agree; i was impressed with the efficiency of the defence considering all the injuries there were, and what he had to work with. things could have been much, much worse. he was designing some really clever plays and subpackages early in the season to create pressure or the illusion of pressure, with suggs gone and having almost no pass rush. kudos to dean pees

he didn't get it at first but after the first couple months he saw what makes the Baltimore Ravens defenses great. Had to say i had a knock on him early but theres no doubts from me over here today ! thanks for proving me wrong Dean.

No doubt! Still not sure how much I like him because of all the zone and passive play calling, but we just don't know how much of that was personnel due to the injuries. Certainly earned himself another season to see how he does with a full deck, but what we ended up accomplishing with our red zone defense was not much short of a miracle.

Can't believe we had this guy coaching the defensive line for the last couple of years. He turned our practice squad into a servicable defense, and looked like a genius from the Denver game until the playoffs and Super Bowl.

Pees is going to be around for awhile, which is fine with me. I'd rather have a good coordinator here for around 5 years than great coordinators who bounce after 2 years and get HC jobs. At least that way there's some consistency with the scheme and play calling for the players. My 2 biggest gripes is that he can't manufacture pressure with our front 4 in the nickel, theres no LOS games with the Dline, and we don't play enough press coverage in the nickel. Especially at the start of the season when we were using Williams and Smith on the outside.

Having said that though, Pees impressed me with his ability to make adjustments and to simplify the schemes to each player's strength.

I would say the opposite is true. What Dean's problem was at first is that he didn't try to change the defense. It needed to be simplified. The sad truth is that Ray, Ed, and the guys who replaced JJ and Suggs just weren't as talented as what we've had in the past. He tried to do what we did with Pagano with crazy blitz packages and elaborate assignments and it was just too much for our young guys and our old guys.

Once he settled down, simplified the defense and focused on fundamentals things started to turn around.

kudos for Dean Pees; I hope he stays in Baltimore for a long time, not following several past DC for HC job..

I still dont like Pees philosophy because it almost cost us the superbowl. We dominated the first half in man coverage. We switched to a safer zone to force them to eat up time and look at what happened. They shouldnt have been able to make up 22 points of deficit in half a quarter.

I was hard on him at the beginning of the year when our Defense was giving up more yards than I've ever seen it. But they turned it around and a lot of that had to do with him. The great thing is, he's gone on record saying he doesn't want to be a Head Coach. We might finally have some continuity at that spot.

You do realize we just won the Super Bowl? Sigh. It was not the scheme that got us chewed up it was the fact that our talent on D is not what it used to be. Ray Lewis' ghost was out there, Pollard was hurt, Haloti left the game... Oh yea and that guy... what was his name? Oh yea Colin Kaepernick... ask the NFC, apparently he's pretty good. C'mon man.

Yeah, I agree with you a lot here. I think Pees tried to do too much and it cost us initially. I like what he did. His adjustments were very good. I think 2013 will be a great season, because for the first time in a very long time we will have continuity. Coordinators won't be leaving. Position coaches seem to be set. It's actually pretty nice. Perhaps we can see some major changes & improvements. I'm excited to say the least.

How is that his fault? I dont think that there is a DC on the face of the planet who can generate consistent pressure with the front four when Kemo/Cody and Jones consist of 2 of the 4.

I hope you are kidding, because we played a ton of man and man/zone all game long.

I think Jones is getting significantly better at creating pressure. You disagree? He's really come on at rushing the QB.

I mean in the sense that he hardly ever stunts or twists etc. Obviously he can't make people win their 1 on 1 battles, but I feel he can do more to help manufacture space and rush lanes for the front. Pagano did an excellent job with that last year. Pagano was better with the fronts than even Rex was, and Pagano was never even a Dline coach unlike Rex.

Has he improved? Yep. Is he anywhere near a guy for opposing defenses to be concerned about? Not in my opinion.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there is much he can do to generate a rush from this line.
Perfect example was the enormous effect losing Ngata had in the third quarter of the SB. When Ngata got hurt, all of a sudden, Gore was able to reach the second level at will, and our pass rush seemed to take a hit as well.

But not only that, we really don't line up with four men very often anyway. Suggs rarely has his hand in the dirt; he crowds the line often, but the other three guys (Ngata, Kemo/Cody and Jones) play the traditional 3-4 roles.

Anywho, I like Pees, and there aren't many guys I'd rather have than him (there are some, but as far as I know, none of them are available)
