PFT Rumor: Ray used banned substance?

293 posts in this topic

This article is in SI.com.

Before you bash me hear me out. I think Ray did take something this season, but he is not going to say anything at this time.

I think most professional athletes "that are injured" try to get back on the field as fast as possible because they love playing the game. To me I really think it should be okay to take steroids/HGH or what ever a doctor subscribes because they are rehabbing a injury. My opinion they should be able to take anything to help them speed up their recover but once they are healthy then get off the stuff.
There is rumors that even Peyton Manning flew to Germany for special treatment for his neck injury. And speculation is out there about Adrian Peterson and how fast he came back from a total knew surgery.

I think the truth will come out a few weeks after the Super Bowl.

You must not talk to a lot of Steelers fans. Any discussion ultimately turns into them calling Ray a murderer.

Look at the evidence. I agree, I don't think there's any question he took the stuff - whatever it is. But I also agree that it's no big deal if he did. It's not like it gives him any competitive edge on the field, it just got him back ON the field sooner than it might have healing naturally. I'd do the same thing especially knowing it was my "last ride"!

If you look closely at Ray's back head he is growing tiny antlers .Look closely NFL .Try anything to hurt
or damage the reputation of our team from this SI article Just bought a couple of Ravens Super Bowl shirts but I couldn't find one that just said it like it is :NO RESPECT

Oh by the way ,why didn't the NFl send us to practice in some backwater bayou swamp? The practice
facility for the Ravens was a joke. They transferred out of that hole which many of our players said was too dangerous to practice on.

Why all the negative votes? Because this guy's the only one posting here without purple Ray Ray glasses on? Believe it or not Raven Nation - Lewis is human and not at all related to Jesus Christ.

How insightful! Now that you mention it, for some reason, on these forums, everyone seems to have a preference for the Ravens! Probably on other teams websites, posters are hard-boiled realists. More research is definitely needed.

Negged ya just for fun.

If steroids kept you out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, there wouldn't be many players in it at all.

The reason I think you are incorrect in your assumption has a few factors actually.

1. This guy claims to have recorded phone conversations (illegal for a private citizen unless the other party is informed the call is being recorded btw) but has yet to produce them to the media. Hmmm....he's being called a lying scum but won't produce his so-called evidence? Sounds fishy to me.

2. He's already been sued multiple times for these same types of claims and LOST! He has a history.

3. This story came out 2 years ago and was investigated then.

4. The guy had a scheduled media interview to clear everything up and just failed to show up.

Sorry, but all the evidence points to this snake oil salesman as the one lying.

I never said or commented about the story (could care less) I was stating that in my opinion professional athletes should have the ability to use steroids/HGH/deer spray or anything similar to speed up their recover so they may get back on the field as fast as they can.
If your not a athlete (if you didn't know) and you are recovering from a serious injury (ie. back/knee/shoulder) many times the doctor will subscribes steroids to help with recovery.

why can't a professional athlete as well?

You're new here arent you lolololol.

No but in all serious all athletes are taking something (Adrien Peterson anyone?), but it doesnt matter so long as its not banned and you don't test positive for it.

But in regards to this story, its bull. The phone call that the claim to have never got released. Its a rehashed story. This is media week everyone. Let it blow over and this thread die.

I could agree with you there I guess. Though I think Lewis is too smart to actually take any substance banned by the NFL even while recovering from an injury.

Steroids can be dangerous stuff and abused even when legally prescribed so not sure that is something, even if they aren't playing at the time, that professional athletes should be taking. Just my opinion though in that regard. I do understand where you're coming from though.

At first, I thought people (especially in the media) just didn't understand the difference between what the NFL bans (synthetic, lab created HGH/IGF-1 which are injected in large doses and flood your system) and the natural, trace amounts of IGF-1 that is in deer antler (at the same levels as some dairy products like milk).

But then I see doctors and biochem experts explaining over and over again about the difference, but these same people continue to say the exact same thing. I listened to a guy on FoxSports Radio interview one of these experts who laid out exactly what the difference is and how they are not the same and how it's in no way a banned substance for 10 minutes. 10 minutes after that, it's like he never had the conversation with his own expert and they continue on about it.

Whatever. Ray could have been drinking the stuff by the gallons and it would not matter. You can't break a banned substance rule if you don't actually ingest a banned substance. But, haters gotta do there job .. so, you know, keep hating.

I know I may get negatives, but I was floored when I heard that Ray was considering a contract with ESPN,(almost sick to my stomach really), and I admit I am biased against that network and all its affiliates, especially after this travesity of a story. I see ESPN as a text book definition of yellow journalism. [Yellow journalism is exaggerated or biased writing disguised as news.]

I really hope he would reconsider his decision to do a deal with them, if he still wants a post career in journalism. It makes me sick to think of Ray associated with the likes of Bayless, Hensely, etc., his reputation deserves better . There aren't many other alternatives, and I know the NFL network is not much better, but I would rather see him there as opposed to ESPN, as the NFL is a little less "sensationalistic" in its efforts at news. But that is just my opinion offered honestly.
We need Ray at ESPN .Way too many Ravens haters there.

Mitch Ross is backing down a bit. Now he openly stated he's never seen Ray Lewis take anything he's sent him.

He was all over discrediting Ross from the moment the story broke, based on his personal experience with the man, not just rumor.

From our own Aaron Wilson in the Baltimore Sun:

SWATS owner publicly apologizes to Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis

Mitch Ross says he never actually saw Ravens inside linebacker use deer antler spray

By Aaron Wilson
The Baltimore Sun
7:38 PM EST, February 1, 2013

NEW ORLEANS –

Mitch Ross, owner of S.W.A.T.S. (Sports With Alternatives to Steroids), refused to provide text messages or shipping labels that would confirm the allegations that he provided a deer antler velvet spray to retiring Ravens inside linebacker Ray Lewis that contains an NFL banned substance.

"I never saw Ray put it in his mouth," Ross said. "I want to apologize to any athletes that this story hurt. It was my intention to shine a light on the technologies that are light years ahead of what people can understand. I had no control of when the story runs. I'm trying to make right the wrong with Ray Lewis.

"Ray was right about one thing," Ross said. "This whole story, this whole slander, was the tactics of the devil."
