The Orioles

32 posts in this topic

I've seen allusions to the Orioles in other threads, I was just wondering how many of us here are Orioles fans. I, myself, have been an Orioles fan since I was very young in the early and mid 90's when we were a perennial contender. What are thoughs about where the team is going, the now 11 seasons in a row with a losing record, and just the Orioles in general. On a side note, I love the new uniforms.

My thoughts about the Orioles will have to start with the fans(us). I think we need to show alot more support for our team big time. How can we compete with the Redsox and Yankees if we can't even fill the stadium. I know all of us want these big time players, but how do you expect to get these big time players if we can't show support.

I went to 3 games last year and was amazed by the attendance nowadays. It also amazes me that we can fill up our Football stadium easy compared to our O's...If it wasn't for the Yankee and Redsox fans filling up our stadium when they come to town, I truly don't know how we could even have a baseball team in Bmore.

I was always told just be "thankful for what you have in life". We should be thankful for having both sports in our small city. I know people are dieing to wait for a sports team in their state alone.

I don't know maybe I'm wrong...I know we lost some fanbase when the Nats came around, but seriously? Maybe baseball isn't Americas sport anymore. I think someone like another Cal Ripken will bring a spark to Bmore for sure.

If I was Angelo's I would take the risk and sign a big time power hitter , just to try and bring the fans back to life in Bmore.

Ive been an orioles fan basically since i was born
Yeah the orioles have been in that gruesome streak but i think its about to end in the next couple of years and eventually we'll be like those Rays except more successful. We're headed in the right direction. I like the new uniforms too.

Agree that the fanbase of late has been lackluster, I went to about 15 home games (including all of the free t-shirt nights) and the upper deck was like a ghost-town. When my dad had season tickets about 10 years ago, Camden Yards was packed every home game. As for the team itself, the first key is to lock up the young talent like Markakis, Adam Jones, Jim Johnson, Dennis Sarfante, Matt Wieters, and Jeremy Guthrie (give him another season, and I think he'll be a 20 game winner.) The next key is to bring in Teixeria (sp?). The dude is an O's fan and really wants to play here, we just need to free up some space to get him here. Our lineup is a bit long in the tooth (Mora, Millar, Huff) and with the season Huff had last year, he can be a nice bargaining chip. Orioles fans have the patience of saints, but give them 2 more years, and we'll be a contender again.

I love the Orioles but they get me angry. It seems each offseason with the free agent market, the Orioles wait for all the good players to be gone. And then they have a big press confrence when they finally sign a 40 year old worn out right handed veteran pitcher. For some reason, the Orioles love worn out veteran right handed pitchers.

I will always love my O's... but this offseason we MUST get Teixeira and at least one frontline starter, or it will be a 12th consecutive losing season in 2009

Ive loved the orioles since birth and still go to a ton of games even they blow. I don't agree that signing Texeria to a mega-deal is a smart move. We need to lock up the young talent, Markakis and Jones, and get as many good pitching prospects as possible. History has shown us that when Anglos wants to go after big ticket free agents the results aren't very good.

I just hope Ramon Hernandez is in another uniform next year.... let's go Matt Wieters!

I agree in letting go of Ramon Hernandez. He's not that great of a defensive catcher and a very streaky hitter, and usually his streaks are few and far between. I'm a big fan of Quiroz, he is an excellent defensive catcher and works well with our young pitchers to settle them down. I don't know how soon we should be Wieters up, if we do do it at the beginning of the season, rotate him and Quiroz, and by June, he'll be ready to take the full time job.

Yeah, agreed. Hernandez was good for us for a season, and now he's just cooled down. Defensively he lost it, and offensively he wasn't exactly good either. Quiroz is fiery and pumps the adrenaline of the pitchers...we need a catcher like him. I think that Wieters won't get a whiff of the major leagues until the second half, but id like to see him a bit earlier then that.

I think Wieters will be called up in week 3 or 4. This is Hernandez contract year, so you'll see his avg go up, which will help us SOME if we keep him, but raise his trade value up.

I don't think Hernandez will be that great of a trading chip this offseason. I think he'll get the start at the beginning of the season and slowly get phased out as Weiters gets groomed. Right now our best trade bait is Aubrey Huff, he had a career season in 08, he's getting up there with age, and is kind of a jerk (he said that Baltimore is lucky to have him). I think he could bring a young pitcher like Gavin Floyd from the White Sox.

well not a lot of teams really are interested in him, as much as they are in George Sherill. Maybe the orioles can work a package deal (huff & Sherrill, although highly unlikely) to a team with a boatloads of prospects, and get them in return.

We really need to sign Markakis soon. Young star player like himself should get locked up fast. His value goes up everyday.

Yeah, markakis has been ripped off by the front office, he doesn't even make over $500,000 per season, outrageous for a player like him. Hope he gets the $$$ he deserves soon. otherwise, i think he'll want out.

Its a business, look why pay a guy 4-5 million when they can pay him 450k then he gets arbitration and gets his money anyway???

You think hes gonna go oh you gave me 10 times as much last year so I'll take less money for my long term contract? NO.

Look you pay young players cheap, then when you get him to 3 years in the league, if he produces, you sign him long term and then he gets his money, much like Ryan Howard. He made crap money until his arbitration hearing which he got over 10M$

I agree I love Nick, but I think if hes asking for more then 6 yrs 60M (what we supposedly offered him) then thats a bit ridiculous, Pedroia was the AL MVP and he signed 6 yrs 40.5 million. I think its time he signs for around what we offered him because we have a good nucleus of posistion players, just need to sure up the pitching and a SS, we should be ok

well i guess youre right...i doubt that we'll let nick out of our grasp, he's too valuable to let go...i think a good deal should be approached.

Hahaha, you are joking, right? We will have our 12th straight losing season in 2009, guaranteed... unless we sign Teixeira and two more decent starters at a minimum.

I think it is premature to say that the O's are going to the playoffs this season, but I do predict a winning season if we can lock up the young talent and bring in Teixera. I give them 2 or 3 more seasons before they are playoff contenders again. We do have the misfortune of being in one of the best divisions in baseball too.
