Wow oh wow what an unpopular opinion you have there. Look I am all for going against the grain, and everyone being titled to their own opinion but can you possibly be joking here? Is there an iota of sarcasm that you could possibly redeem this post with?

For starters, there is only a HANDFUL of safeties even in the Hall of fame. Ed Reed has revolutionized the position. Before Ed was drafted by us safety wasn't considered to be a remote priority position in the draft. Since then we have seen safeties go in the top 5 because of the impact Reed has on transforming the position into a critical component of a top tier defense. The league is also trending into a passing league which has made the safety position even more critical as well.

Most pundits would still put Reed as he plays now into the top 5 if not at the top of the top 5.

Furthermore, its not like one of those other comparable safeties are Free Agents. So it's not like we can realisitically upgrade Reed with a Eric Berry or a Earl Thomas.

Lastly, is there a player on our roster or in the draft that is of Reed's caliber? I think not, and having Reed around a year or two more doesn't hurt our chances of grooming his replacement or scouting one out.
Sorry but since Reed came into the league in 02 , only two Safeties have gone in the top 5 (both picked 5th overall) One being the now deceased Sean Taylor and the other being Eric Berry.

I don't think Reed needs to retire. I think he can return. Everyone says he will leave us and go to another team. I even heard it from the team or whatever. I ask why is that guaranteed? Nobody knows for sure. Between Williams & Reed, I would take Reed every time. I don't think Reed will be that expensive. His play has dropped recently. He must see it. But then again, he has played better now as a traditional safety.

I think he's back. I really do.
Denial! I have it too. He wants to get paid a ridiculous amount of money. He's felt we dogged him in his current contract. I know whatever he asks for he won't be worth on the playing scale. It could hurt other positions drastically.
You proved his point bruh. If you want to argue it, you would have to show safties being drafted high BEFORE Ed Reed.

I'm not in denial, lol. There's a realistic chance he leaves. Someone will have to go for us to keep him. We won't be able to retain all of our free agents. I don't think he will be that expensive, though. The guaranteed money seems to be the most important for him. Also, it's a deep free agency pool of safeties. I don't see his market being that big due to his play the last few years.

He's also said he's considering retirement and then not done it. He's all over the place sometimes.

I don't take much he says at face value

Just ball out in NO, Ed. That's all I care about right now.

I think Ed will test FA, then give the Ravens a chance to match his highest offer. That's just the way I see it sadly.

It could be like Ray's situation a few years ago when no one was willing to pay him what we were so he came back. He tested FA and realized no one else valued him the way we do.

Anything but a Pats or an AFCN (merely for competitive purposes - actually respect the teams within our div) jersey.

I think it's different though. I think over half the teams would overpay for him, he would only play for a contendor though so it narrows down to a few teams. I wouldn't be AS upset if he went to an NFC team. I just don't see that happening as well.

I'd feel comfortable betting on him heading up to New England. Belichick loves him and even a rapidly declining player who's constantly out of position, like Reed, is better than the back end of that secondary now.

Especially if he gets his ring, he's going to want a juicy contract to finish out his career.

And what if we do resign him, and he starts to decline big time... how can you demote Ed Reed?

Some very interesting questions for the FO to toss around.

I wonder what he'll say tomorrow.

Seriously though, if we win the big dance and Reed doesn't retire, I'll be a tad disappointed for lack of a better word. That's going to hurt the cap, and at this point he should just go out on top. He's been contemplating retirement for years. Why not just go out on top and let the team rebuild?

I love how people are making negative comments about Reed because he wants play more football. Obviously it'll hurt if he's in another uniform but if his heart is still into playing football I respect that. Remember that he is playing through a new injury he got this season ontop of the old lingering ones. He might feel like when that injury heels (assuming it's something that can be heeled) he can be more effective. And he's shown in the postseason that when he doesn't gamble he is still the best at covering the back end. Who are we to complain what a man decides to do with his career?

Fixed.

Reed's been battling injuries every year for the past five years. A few of them have lingered into other seasons. His body is just dilapidated.

You got to be kidding me.

Please go ahead and name those 5 safety that are that much better than hof Ed Reed

Dashon Goldson
Jairus Byrd
Earl Thomas
Eric weddle
Malcolm Jenkins

Guessing his list
could even add Eric berry. They aren't much better, but right now today, they are better thats the point.

None, however, will ever be better than when ed reed was at it best, but you don't pay players based on 3 or 4 seasons ago. You pay the based on what you expect going forward.

Really lets nit pick more. I said assuming it can be healed lol

Bottom line it's not the fans decision. It's his career and if he think he still has more in the tank and the desire to play is still there then that's that. No one is more aware of his body than Ed Reed.

As an after-thought I am not big on ridiculing a first post. Is that really necessary? You had a first post too, and I am sure it was pure gold from the sound of it
i didn't mention replacing him at all, I didn't mention anything about his previous years and what he's done. He will be a first ballot hall of faker no doubt. The best modern day safety no doubt. But all that is in the past. You don't pay players based on that.

That's what bad teams do, pay big money to free agents based on past years praying the stile gold. Reed is a shell of his former self, mainly due to age and injuries, it happens every player eventually. But he's complained about being under pay at 7 mil a year, disrespected etc etc. and he just won't be worth the kind of money he's seeking.

If he settles for a fair deal for his level of play I'm all for him retiring here. But Byrd and goldson are free agents and will command huge money. Byrd especially, and reed is going to look at that, and him being his own agent he's going to want a similar deal probably.

Can you honestly say he's worth it now? 5 years ago yes, no doubt I'd pay him what he wants, especially if ray was retiring, but his level of play isn't worth what his current contract is let alone a new one, where he will want a signing bonus and then could just retire after one year, leaving us in dead cap hell.

And edit, it's not an unpopular opinion, I've noticed you've really came back into posting lately but earlier in the year there was a lot of people posting similar things to what I'm saying, the board was pretty split on ed reed. That's quieted a bit now we ve been winning, and I def don't go out of my way to criticise him, heck I wouldn't have mentioned it at all of that's poster didnt speak with such a guarantee.

But the fact of the matter is, reed isn't the same anymore, and we can't pay him based on his former self. People need to realise that.

Way I can see happening those is him hitting free agency like ray Lewis then getting a real shock to the system that no one else in the league wants to pay him what he wants either, then he may come back and settle for a lot less. Exactly what happened ray, bet no one here thought the front office would do that, but should just crumble at his demands and pay a mid 30 year old based on his performance when he was 10 years younger.

Poor business that would be

I see Reed opting to return hear after he gets offers that will not be as lucrative as he thinks. I could even see Reed re-signed before hitting the market.
hes still very good, before he as inured anyway. The point was, which you got, ed reed isn't the player he once was. He's not the best safety on the league anymore, but at the same time he hasn't fell of as big a cliff as troy has done.
this right here. He seems to over value him self as a player from what he's said in the offseason. Yes I'd rather have him resign here, but not for what it appears he will initially demand.

I'd love him here for a couple seasons and draft Matt Elam. He can teach him up, we can switch them in and out, giving reed rest a few games a year and a few plays even in the games he does play, giving Elam valuable experience, and of course one of the best in his prime as his mentor.

Honestly I see Reed on another team next yr. Ravens prob wont franchise him and both sides won't come to a contract agreement. I am betting on the Patriots because of the full blown man crush Belichek has for him. Pats will spend the money. I don't like it either but I see it happening.

I'm glad to know we'll have # 20 in the backfield next year in the NFL, but my worry is that he ends up signing elsewhere and doesn't retire a Raven.

I would think at the worst he'll retire a Raven like how Mason retired a Raven.

Before I thought that if we won the SB he'd retire, and if we didnt he'd come back to either us, the Patriots, or the Colts. Now that he's said he'll be back us winning the SB would just make it easier for him to go to a bad team for a big pay day.

If we lose I still think it would be between us, the Pats, and the Colts. Whoever would be willing to pay him the most and who he thought would have the best chance at winning it all next year would most likely get him
