A Fish Called Yanda

Report: Joe Flacco looking for at least $20 mil/year

1,573 posts in this topic

I wish football players would put their ego aside and take a reasonable compensation for their talents. If you're on a good, well-balanced, well-run team with a good organization behind you, why do you need 20 million dollars a year? Who cares if some guy who isn't even as good as you is making more money? Your family is set for GENERATIONS (if you're smart with your money, or even as long as you're not just incredibly stupid with your money) if you just take a reasonable multi-million dollar deal and allow the team some room to fill in the pieces around you with other guys. If you command such a large portion of a team's salary, you're just hurting your chances of having a good team around you. Which mean you won't be as successful.

Any smart individual who can put their ego aside should recognize that 15 million dollars and a great team with lots of success is more valuable and will bring you more happiness than 20 million dollars and a bad team with no success.

And I believe that Joe is smart enough to feel that way, and I don't think he has that ego.

The problem is the stupid agent. The agent does all the talking, all the decision making, all the negotiating. The agent doesn't care if the player does well or if his team does well, he just cares about MONEY. It's a bad situation. I hope Joe tells Linta to shove off and takes a fair deal.

I love all the panic that settles in. It's just Linta manipulating rumors to put himself in the best possible position for contract talks. Joe will end up on a contract with 18Mill at the very most.
Agreed. I'm not panicking. We all know Ozzie is one of the best. We've never been in this situation before where we had to pay a QB top money, but I have confidence that he'll get a deal done without doing anything to compromise the team. Joe is going to be paid like a top QB, as he deserves, but within reason.

By rounding it, you make your argument severely less effective.

ie Joe Flacco's salary = Peyton's salary is a joke vs Joe Flacco's salary exceeding that of Peyton's is a travesty.

See how that works.

Just agent talk boys and girls. Flacco will be here for a long time don't worry!
Agreed, Linta is just setting the bar high in order to get the maximum amount of money possible. He asks for 20, Ozzie gives him 18 instead of the original 16 he might have gotten if he'd asked for 18.

Flacco is not worth 18mill p/year. Lets get real.

If anyone think this team can do better w/o Ellerbe(remember games w/o him?), Boldin, Kruger & Ed Reed. Everyone is kidding themselves. He needs to work with the Ravens organization and get to a reasonable deal.

If Joe 'gold-digger' Linta really wants that money and force our team to be a losing team like saints. Then he can go [away].

Asking a guy why he needs 20 million dollars a year is like asking a billionaire why he continues trying out new ideas with his company to make even more money....it's self explanatory. I'm not going to hate on Joe OR the agent whose entire job revolves around getting the athletes he represents more money because that's how it works. I don't believe Joe will get 20 and I don't believe he'll be a stick in the mud about it but if I had the chance to make that much I can't say I wouldn't at least give it a go.

It says the same thing... Joe should not get as much or equal to what Peyton gets. And the thread says Joe wants AT LEAST 20 million per, likely more, meaning even using my ROUNDED numbers, Joe would make more than Peyton.

So he's went from leaving money on the table to being the highest or 2nd highest paid player in the league. This is all rumours, nothing to see in either report

Peyton Manning is making 20 million a year. No way Joe should get that much.
I agree. Making 20 MM a year for Peyton Manning who has accomplished so much in his career and puts seats in the stadium and brings intangible brand recognition to a franchise is not the same thing as paying Flacco 20 MM a year! Although Flacco is an up and comer and potentially elite, he is still not the household name Manning is and does not sell the number of jerseys he does.... unfortunately I might add.

Its actually 19.2 million a year that Peyton gets. Just trying to cover your tracks.. the 800k makes a big difference when talking about players' salaries :34853_shakehead:

Isn't he guaranteed $40m over the next two years? From PFT:
Then, if Manning is on the Broncos’ roster on the final day of the 2012 league year, his base salaries of $20 million in 2013 and $20 million in 2014 become fully guaranteed.
I'm just giving you a hard time because someone earlier in the thread was correcting me when I said it was 20 million. 20 is close enough for me.

This last statement was extremely [misinformed] no offense. The Saints essentially didnt change at all from last year to this year in terms of personnel (Nicks for Grubbs was the only major switch and thats not a horrendous downgrade). The difference between a losing saints team and last year's saints team was mainly Sean Peyton and the return of suspended guys like Vilma

Ughhhhh. Damn you Linta.

Hopefully Flaccos future contract won't kill our team. I wouldn't be mad if we paid him like 18 or 19 for like 5-6 years. But 20+ !?!? Hell no. Just a tactic. Maybe higher the guarantee money to something that wouldn't be normal, or the signing bonus? I don't know.

Nevermind, didn't know only guaranteed and signing bonus goes against the cap.

I say give Flacco a big guarantee with a lower value. Something like 112 million over 7 years with 50 million guaranteed. It's not like he's going anywhere. He could have a career-ending injury, sure, but he's been pretty durable (knock on wood).

Obviously no one read the article.. John Clayton said contract talks for Matt Ryan is expected to be near $20M/yr and that although Flacco has faced plenty of criticism he now has an 8-4 playoff record and Ryan only has 1 playoff win, so it would be understandable if Flacco representatives ask for similar money. But will he get a $20 Million year is debatable.

Basically it's random contract talk comparing Flacco and Ryan once again, it doesn't state that Joe Flacco's agent asked for this or hinted at this it said it would make sense for them to basically wait for Matt Ryan's contract then demand more money based on Joe's playoff record.

Oh God. We're gonna turn into the Lions.....

Screw you Linta!

(We all want Joe to get his due - but at the cost of the team? No way! Find a better agent Joe - that will get you your DESERVED payment; as well as having a competitive team)

Also remember that salary isn't the cap number, the only part that matters is guaranteed money.

The guaranteed money and the bonuses.

I hate Joe Linta. Always opening his mouth after a big game by Joe. Obviously it's an agents job to get the most money possible and they do this for personal gain more than anything else but I don't have to like it. I would hope Joe understands that amount of money takes a huge hit on the quality of team he will be playing with.

Let's hope the Falcons don't sell the farm for Ryan. We need to get our contract done before those idiots overpay.

Joe should be getting Eli money + inflation.
