Juan Castillo hired as offensive consultant!

110 posts in this topic

This kind of reminds me of Scarface.

Andy Reid (Frank), Harbaugh (Tony Montana), Castillo (Ernie).

Reid fires him, goes on to Chiefs, probably tried to bring him to back to coaching staff, Harbaugh get's to the superbowl and asks Castillo... "You want a job Juan?"

haha

He will probably replace Andy Moeller next season... I like it!!!
I have since heard he is going to become a run coordinator - whatever that means! That begs the question what is going on with Will Montgomery? He is perhaps the best RB coach in the league! Is Montgomery upset that the O-Coordinator long term was given to Caldwell? Just speculation I know but still.......

Not sure that I like this, at this particular moment in time.

This offense is firing on all cylinders. It has nowhere to go but down from here -- tampering with it can only expediate that process.

I like this move. At worst it makes no difference, at best we brought in a good o-line coach. Kind of reminds me of the Caldwell hire. Overlooked, victim of Peter principle, comes in and is used within himself and does a good job.

Not so much with the run game I think. Particularly when it comes to blocking for Rice. I said it earlier but Castillo was the Oline coach when Philly had Westbrook in his prime, Rice is basically a carbon copy of Westbrook. Our run game, with Rice especially, has been pretty ordinary and we've been relying on wearing a defense down before we start consistently moving the ball. Thats all well and fine when you're still in the game or ahead, but that puts alot of pressure on Joe to move the ball himself in the first half. If Castillo can bring something in that helped with run blocking for Westbrook that will only benefit Rice. If we can get Rice going on the ground early like a couple years ago thats going to be huge for us.

Great O-Line coach that other NFL teams were no doubt salivating over for the offseason. No problem with it. I like the signing a lot and hope he can help in any way to finding some raw OL talent in the draft, which is so desperately needed right now. A first-rounder will be easy to spot, but we have to hit on one or two in the later rounds, as well. Castillo seems to be good at finding guys as well as developing them. Philly always had such a dominant OL during his tenure and that was the key to all their success--even through major injuries.

I really dont think he will be the "run game coordinator" next season. I believe that is just a title used to say "we can't give you an official title right now, but you will be useful for the Super Bowl and as 2013 O-line coach."

I think the main reason for his hire, is that Rice has been having a lot of one and two yard runs when we clearly have the best blocking fullback in the league and a more than capable and physical offensive line. With two weeks until the game, that will give him time to help on the line's blocking technique, Leach's reads, and Rice's reads. Maybe the backs are missing holes that we dont notice, or maybe the o-line is not playing up to its potential. Who knows. But I do know that the Niners have the best front seven in the league and extra help cant be a bad thing.

Harbaugh has obviously noticed there is an issue somewhere that the current staff cant fix. I trust that he sees the problem before the fans do. And it seems like he has. Harbaugh hasnt made any mistakes so far in my eyes, so I trust that he knows what he's doing.

What ever his title will be next year, I like the hire.

We'll see if you're still saying that if his title becomes defensive co-ordinator. :P

I guess Im OK with it. It is kinda a head scratcher as far as the timing though.
we probably just wanted to take him off the market... get him in... then sort other things later

nb: this has already been said so lol at me

Run game coord? Is anyone fooled by that? That'd almost be an insult to the offensive coordinator if that position actually existed.
actually the saints have a run coordinator but he was the running back coach ( not really sure maybe it was offensive line coach) but he overall is the one that sets up the run scheme and etc

Ahhh. I know a lot of people are wondering about the timing of this.

But think about it. He was on a team with Michael Vick. He understands the line blocking for Vick and he also understands how to play defense against a mobile QB (practicing against Vick). This could also be part of the thinking RIGHT now. Could bring some insight.

Now that Cam is gone, it is a distinct possibility - however, isn't Caldwell the QB coach that emphasizes on fundamentals? How many different coaches do you want teaching various different ways of playing QB????
Well, it looks like Caldwell will be the OC fulltime now, so BAL will need to find another QB coach.

I think his title will still be run game coordinator next year. Harbaugh said yesterday that the entire staff is coming back next year, meaning Moeller will most likely be back.

I like this hire, especially with Caldwell at OC. Caldwell seems to welcome any and all input into the game plan. He understands that game planning should be a team effort, unlike Cam... As has been pointed out, Castillo was O-line coach when westbrook was in Philly and he was a stud. I think he will have some good ideas. Also, for the super bowl, he may help provide a few wrinkles that we have not shown this year to keep it a little fresh and the 9ers off balance a little better. This could be different blocking schemes or different formations/looks outta the backfield.

This is actually a really good hire for the guys dismissing it. Castillo is a VERY established Oline coach. Why the hell Reid hired him to be a DC I'll never know, but the guy knows how Olines work and their interactions in the trenches.

He'll likely help with identifying the OT we take in the first 2 rounds in the upcoming draft.
For real. Castillo most likely identified Jason Peters as a priority for the Eagles when he was making problems in Buffalo. The guy knows offensive lineman.

Maybe he can tell Caldwell to stop running the ball on every single first down. Pretty sure other teams start to figure it out.
BOTH! But more the Patriots game. I thought it was obvious Joe needed to be in the shotgun. When he finally did go to the gun and start shredding their secondary I looked like a prophet.

His play calling on passing plays is really aggressive which fits Flaccos confident throwing mentality. But he still seems to be preoccupied with making sure to give Rice enough touches first and foremost. I agree, that Ray needs to get his, but you can't do it by totally sacrificing Joe's passing attempts for short yard gains by rushing. We do still score most of our points passing, not rushing, so next time I hope Jim doesn't put on handcuffs on Joe for the entire first half. I guess the Pats game, when NE took Rice out of the game made that problem pretty obvious.

The timing of it is obvious to me... All the bad teams are not going to wait for us to win the super bowl to hire a good coach... We don't want him going somewhere like Pittsburgh. The Patriots have made similar moves the last two years.
Exactly what I was going to say. You cannot wait to grab up a good prospect or he will be gone.

Really? I stand corrected then. It still seems a little insulting to tell the offensive coordinator that they're hiring someone else to handle the run game.

you right it does seems a little insuliting to tell the offensive coordinator that they're hiring some one else to handle the run game but i guess its very helpful. Im not sure if they actually come to the offensive coordinator during a game and say okay its time for me to call a run play . I'm sure its alot more to it then we know but i guess we will find out eventually but I have faith that the ravens coaches know what they doing with the juan castillo hiring

They probably talked to Caldwell about it beforehand to get his input. I think he might approve of the hire.

If Caldwell is afraid to use the weapons he has (and I mean all of them, not just Rice), then he is weak stock. Running the ball almost cost us the game against the Pats. Again, I like a lot about his play calling, he is definitely an update compared to Cam, but it's not the run plays that got us to the Superbowl.

According to most sources I've read, Castillo has been with the team for weeks already as a consultant. They just made it "official" now.
