With all our Injuries to our Linebackers and the Nose Tackles not getting Penetration at The Line would it be better to switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3

We're not switching in the AFCG. Or next season. We'll still play 3-4 and 4-3 mix.

They key part of that question is the word "injuries." We wouldn't switch for just one game, and next year guys will be back healthy. We were a top 5 defense over the last 5 or 6 weeks of the season. Our defense started to really come together, in spite of still dealing with injuries. I expect our defense will be back in the top 10 next season. Maybe we aren't a top 3 defense anymore, but we'll be closer to how we played in the second half of the season than the first half.

We're able to play the 4-3/3-4 Hybrid defense because of the versatility of Suggs with his hands on the ground or standing up.

No, Brandon22. I don't think switching defensive schemes to a pure 4-3 is a good move right before we play the most important game of the season so far. We also don't have a defensive line strong enough for a 4-3, because in a 4-3 you need a very good defensive line. That's the primary emphasis of a 4-3.

Yes and no. In a 4-3, the linemen are only responsible for one gap. In a 3-4, they are responsible for two. It's well understood that defensive linemen have a a much easier job in a 4-3. However, Cody and Kemo are not meant for a 4-3 defense.

Kemo is a FA and likely won't be re-signed but Cody still has a year left on his rookie deal. As underwhelming as he's been, cutting him would be a waste.

I do prefer the 4-3 defense to the 3-4, I like the extra control over the line of scrimmage that the 4-3 gives you. So I wouldn't be complaining if on Week 1 next season we lined up with a 4-3 defense. I don't think it will happen though.

First of all, this team runs versions of the 3-4 and the 4-3. They don't just stay in a traditional 3-4 all game long like some teams that run a 3-4.

Secondly what version of the 4-3 are you hoping to run. Do you want a 4-3 in which you have attacking DTs are do you want a 4-3 with 2 big run-stuffing Tackles in the middle that frees up the middle linebacker. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the old 4-3 with 2 big bodies protecting the MLB because I loved when Ray had Adams & Siragusa eating up blockers for Ray to slice through. But one of the reasons that teams have stirred clear of that base of 4-3 is because the game has changed so much in the last 10 years with all of the rule changes teams now pass more because of all the rules that involve little contact with the WR or QB. Teams like to get as many athletes on the field as possible rather than the big guys.

Would it kill you to type normally?

And no, if we switched to a 4-3. I don't think we'd need to draft anybody. Ngata, Jones, Tyson, Hall, and McPhee are all more than capable of playing DT in a 4-3. In fact, Tyson, Jones, Hall, and McPhee would be better off in a 4-3.

Mattison Ran Primarily a 4-3 and it was dreadful. I remember people calling for his head to switch back to the 3-4. When he was calling the defense, it was a hybrid primary 4-3 secondary 3-4. I like the 3-4 especially with Kruger and Upshaw. Now if we could just put Ngata back at the nose and put McPhee and Jones At the ends and we would be set IMO.
