Extend McKinnie's contract

72 posts in this topic

Mac is playing for his next contract. And he didn't play all year because he was out of shape and then had that injury (back or hip?). No way we re-sign him with his two fellow U players set to leave.

I said this in the game thread but I can see us consider bringing him back. The problem is he has serious consistency issues and has an issue with dedication in the offseason. I can see us bringing him back, though.

I don't think that's the biggest problem - I'd say it's the fact that he'll be 34 in September and has played in the league for a decade - most offensive linemen don't play into their late 30s. However good or bad he is, I don't think he has more than a year or two left in the league.

What it shows is, that even a slight improvement to the OL could mean a lot for our passing game. We need to sure up that offensive line in the draft, imho.

Funny to see all the love Big Mac is getting now. No one agreed with this when I posted it:

Anyone that doesnt think BM has made the difference in the line, is fooling themselves. Flacco has almost been untouched from the left side.
Um, I've been supporting McKinnie since last season. I'm on no bandwagon if that's what you're getting at. I identified him has our best tackle early into last season. I'm pretty sure I even started a thread about it.

If (when) we win the Super Bowl this year. He will retire or he will probably lose a lot of effort. He would have gotten his ring and probably not have a lot of motivation to play next year. Especially on a multi-year contract.

Yeah, no... The dude needs money. Ring or not, that will have nothing to do with his future plans or motivation.

True. But once he gets that contract and some guaranteed money what do you think will happen? He won't be playing next to a Ray Lewis who vouched for him only to see him slack off. I'd give him an extra year but I'm not committing to him for the future. I'd much rather draft in the 1st round for a guy who can pass and run block and will be here for many years.

If its an incentive based deal, with workout and mini-camp bonuses... Maybe. I don't think we're gonna have the cap space. Birk should retire. Heck, Q might even hang em up if we win the Lombardi.

I've said this all year .Mckinnie is a better LT then Oher.

Many people in this forum disagreed with me saying he was a poor run blocker and out of shape.

Guess what , we would not be going to the AFC Championship game with Oher protecting the blind side .

Yes, his motivation and work ethic is in question, no doubt. But that's not what you said. A ring will have no affect on anything for him moving forward.

Incentive laden contract extension and call it a day. Weight clauses and all!

They go hand in hand. You get a Super Bowl ring as the starting LT and you may get more money elsewhere anyways. He showed us that we need him but after he gets that contract he probably won't try as hard. He'll get enough guaranteed money and even incentive based money doesn't mean he will get all of it.

Okay, you said he would retire if he won a ring. Ring or not will, again, have no affect on his decision to keep playing.

It's tough because Mac is proving worth, but how much of it comes from Harbs pushing him and how much to you credit him for actually doing what was necessary to play? Does him getting benched for the first time in his career light a permanent fire under his butt and keep him going for a full season? That's something that Harbs will have to see in his eyes when he has that talk.

I think Harbs really likes Big Mac and would have to have him back, but only if he's willing to continue to fight. Harbs told Mac in the offseason that he was gonna get him back to that probowl level. Well over these last 2 games, that's what Mac looks like, but can it be consistent for 19-20 games?

I wouldn't mind signing him to a deal for 1yr but they still need to get young at the LT position. If you can't sign a solid LT in FA and let's be honest most of the guys available are damaged goods to a certain extent. I think draft is the way to go.
He came into last year after being jettisoned by the Vikings and started every game. Regardless of any bias or preconceived notions you might have, the man is an athlete.

Albert Haynesworth was an athlete. His motivation is suspect and always has been. You get a big contract, your effort suddenly doesn't mean as much especially on a team that isn't contending. Most players aren't like this but a lot are. He wasn't able to stay in shape this offseason and sat for much of the year because of that. I'll take him for another year but no multi-year contracts. He isn't that good anyway.
He's only a band-aide at the position at best because of his age but to link him to Haynesworth is insulting. And to say "he isn't that good anyway" is diminishing the significant impact he's had on the improvement of Joe these last 2 games. He's the best LT on the team hands down, and if we can't find somebody better during the off-season we should make an effort to retain him. I'm tired of watching Oher look completely lost and Joe being punished for it.

There's no denying that our line is playing better under this current configuration, which hinges on somebody playing left tackle so that Oher can play on the right side, where he's a much better player. Whether we keep McKinnie around or draft a young left tackle who can start right away, we need to do what we can to keep Oher on the right side.

Thanks. I didn't have one until last week. I thought it was appropriate in honor of the "Last Ride."

I think Bryant is done if we win it all. Him, Birk, Reed and Lewis. BA is probably done as well as is Bobbie Williams.

The past two games to me solidifies that we are going to jump up in the draft for a LT. We won't resign McKinnie because he breaks down too fast and he's old.

But I think the last two games definitely shows what Flacco can do with protection and that Ozzie will try to jump up for a quality LT prospect.

What this move shows me is KO is a left tackle and oher is a very good right tackle. He dominated von millar minus maybe two plays all game. I'd be happy with McKinnie being resigned as long as we get someone behind him to push him.
I'm slightly confused, did you word this correctly. I'm thinking u meant this showed u KO is a left guard?? But wrote left tackle?

KO is a rookie and has played well, but his strength is power run blocking, he has been average at passing blocking, at times look similar to Oher ( on the left side ). Most nfl teams line their best pass rushers up on the right side of the defense which is the offenses left side ( they may rotate or move around their rushers to create mismatches but still KO has faced a majority of 2nd tier pass rushers for teams. So what has happened to convince you that KO is the left tackle of the future?

But honestly, I wish I could sleep more...... On topic now

Well, Mckinnie for a one year deal and then drafting Kyle Long could help
