I have so many games I don't want to delete. Is it easy to transfer recordings to an external hard drive?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to these things but I'm gonna ask a friend who might know. I'm assuming you've already tried Google etc.

We used to write to a DVR and burn the games--with the TIVO we go to the computer then burn them or put them on an external hard drive.

Alright. Turns out my friend is using a Hauppauge HD-PVR to transfer his recordings from his DVR to his computer and then wherever. From what he told me, it basically works like a VCR or DVD recording; you press record on the Hauppauge device, press play on the DVR and it records to your computer at no quality loss.
Direct TV has made it damn near impossible to pull recordings off their DVRs and since they are encrypted you can't take the raw file stored on your box and move it into your computer without a recording device or a video capture card (damn you DRM).
The only thing you have to consider with this is the cost of buying the actual device. He got his on a sale on Best Buy -$50 off but I've seen the prices range anywhere from $100+ to $200 so you best make your own market research before you choose to buy one.
Other than that, setting it up sounded pretty straightforward. There's detailed instructions on the device manual and through a quick browse on YouTube I found a bazillion videos showing you how to get it to work.
Hope this helped!
