Both 75 and 52 should be retired and be the only ones retired
Our very first two draft picks and they are hofers
That's a retiring for not only what they were as nfl players but what they meant as ravens

I feel like we can honor him in other ways, like the ring of honor. But, it's not like basketball where you only have like 12 guys picking from 100 numbers. We only have so many numbers for so many players. And while right now we cant imagine anyone else other then Ray wearing 52, in 15 years we may not feel the same way. 52 is a great number too, not only because of Ray but just for the ILB position.

I really don't think it's necessary to retire his number. Like what about Ed Reed or Jonathan Ogden we can't retire every number of every great/legendary player.

#52 and #75 should be retired. #20 should be given to Marc Anthony.

Et tu, Brute?

Harbaugh should use a #20 jersey as a personal handkerchief :P

Did I miss something? I thought Ed went to Texas for a vacation and we were fine welcoming him back to retire?

On an unrelated note, I like seeing which Marc Anthony will get more references whenever the name is mentioned.

I don't think any player have guts to ask for their #52 Jersey......

You underestimate the egotism of stars.

I really hate the idea of retiring a number. I really hate it! But considering Ray and JO accomplished what they did while staying with the team that drafted them, I deem it acceptable.

Reed, not so much.

There are a lot of varied opinions here. Mine is simple. If the team decides to begin officially retiring numbers, then it should be limited to:

(1) Players that have spent their entire career fully in a Ravens uniform.

(2) Any & all were inducted into the HOF.

Ogdens should be retired this year. Ray's when he's inducted.

Ray Lewis is the best inside linebacker ever. No one comes close.

Everyone else in every other position has someone else who could arguably be better. There isn't a better case for a number being retired than that of Ray Lewis. I mean it's more solid than Detroit retiring Sanders' or the Broncos retiring #7, or the 49ers retiring #16 or the Giants #56.

Although the Steelers have retired only one number to date (Stautner's #70), other numbers are no longer issued since the retirement of the players that wore them:

1 Gary Anderson
12 Terry Bradshaw
32 Franco Harris
36 Jerome Bettis
52 Mike Webster
58 Jack Lambert
59 Jack Ham
63 Dermontti Dawson
75 Joe Greene
86 Hines Ward

Ray's should be the one we officially retire. Then we just shouldn't issue #75 or #20 or #3.

Surprised Bradshaw wasn't retired.  Also a wonder Frenchy Fuqua isn't on the list.

52 and 75 are off limits. Haven't seen anyone where 3 since Stover left so that's a good sign

To begin, let me just say to everyone attacking the original poster: chill out. This is a good question that deserves a good answer, and as Ravens fans we're simply here to give our opinions. There are several teams in the league both new and old that have, for one reason or another, refused to retire players' numbers. Baltimore, being a new team, has never really had the ability to do so, so I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I also haven't heard anything conclusively from the front office saying what they'll do about his number, so these speculative forums are completely warranted. Do I think they should retire #52? Heck yes! I've been a Ravens fan for as long as I can remember and Ray-Ray has always been and will always be my favorite player. Part of me thought he would just play forever and to see him walk away from the game truly breaks my heart. But I digress, if anyone deserves to have their number retired for any team, it's Ray Lewis. The statistics speak for themselves: 16 years in the league with the same team, 13 pro bowls, 2 Defensive Player of the Year awards, 2 SuperBowl wins, a SuperBowl MVP, and a shoe-in for a first round Hall of Fame Inductee... How could it get much better? And it's not just his numbers... The intangibles and the leadership he brought to our defense are unparrelled, and he truly is one in a million. We will miss you Ray! Retire #52!

I think Rays number should be retired for not just the play that he spoiled us with for years on end but also to the fact that when you really think about it, Ray wasn't anything near an ordinary player. Ray transcended the game, how many players have been flown to places all over the world just to inspire other teams to championships? I mean for goodness sake, the man inspired Phelps to go back to swimming only to see him become the most decorated Olympian ever!! How many times have we seen players of our team and other teams get hype off of his pre-game war dance? How many young man has he inspired in this league to be the best at their position? Lets not forget he help motivate a team that no one and I mean no one outside of Baltimore thought would even get past Denver, let alone hoisting the trophy(and I would seriously doubt anyone debating how well a mentor he was when Reed, Suggs, Ngata, Rice, and Webb all came into the league). This man is a legend in every sense of the word, he is my generations version of Johnny U and to be honest, I don't think anyone would be mad if #52 was retired on the same day they put up a statue of Ray Ray, either right next to or on the opposite side of old MR. Golden Arm.

I like your thinking. lol

Lol I love it. I feel the same way! My boyfriend is a Packers fan and every time I see clay matthews I'm like... Nah he's not the REAL #52. In my opinion no one else deserves the number.
