I don't like retiring numbers. It's stupid, and you can't retire a lot else there's nothing for anybody to wear.
Maybe a 5-year mourning period, but I don't want it permenately retired.

Ogden and Lewis should have their numbers retired but that opens up the floodgates. What about Reed? How long before people ask for every star to be retired? Heap? J.Lewis?

Ray Lewis deserves all the honors available but as we havent done it yet I kind of hope we do not. I think I can see a statue going up really soon.

Agree. Though we can hold it back for a few more years, I really don't want to open the gate for anybody else.
You can see that happened with our Ring of Honor, we have a little too many people there already. Byner and J. Lewis shouldn't be there, and you can expect a similar situation with the #s.

Heap and J. Lewis are not on the same level as Reed, Ogden, and Lewis. #20, #75, #52 are arguably the best at their position.

A few people voted no because they believe #52 should be retired for every team in the NFL, not just the Ravens...which is kind of funny. No way that would happen.

52 should be the only number retired.

As great as JO was, and Reed and so many others, none can even compare to Ray Lewis. It can get out of hand real fast.

If 19 stayed retired that would be fine too, but if it comes back no biggie.

I'd love to see the player that would wear 19 in Bmore. Same thought holds true for 52.

It's funny how Ed reed had been declared the best safety to ever play the game but will not get a statue like ray Lewis....it's crazy cause that will be the case. Ray Lewis is arguably best linebacker ever. Ed reed is the best safety ever, lol.

Several storied teams have never retired players. The Cowboys and Raiders, most notably.

Actually a great point but I still think they should.

I'd hope they can find a young buck who can come in and continue the legacy of the 52.

Retiring it is a totally acceptable option.

Ellerbe has done pretty damn good! To paraphrase Dennis Haysbert, the Ravens are in good hands! :ravensquote:

True. Ray Lewis can clear cut overshadow a guy that is greatest to ever play a position.

Makes ya really think....

It's Ray's leadership skills that makes him stand out over Ed Reed.

of course he does, and will have it retired, in time. I'm sure they wan't to make it special. Warren Sapp was just put in TB's Ring of Honor, and they told him he would also have his number retired. He hasn't played for a couple years. It will take some time.

I expect this scenario.

#52 will not be worn for 5 years.

Then when Ray Lewis becomes a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, then his uniform number will be retired.

He was the franchise for 16 years.

They'll retire his number when he's on the ballot for the hall of fame. They might even commemorate the entire season for the occasion and erect that statue everybody has been talking about. Kind of like what the Orioles did this past season for all their greats.

We should only retire 52 and 75. They were the original Ravens and were with us their whole career.

Yezzirr... That's what I said in another thread. Don't retire 20.. for this one reason: You will never see a #75 JONATHAN OGDEN or a #52 RAY LEWIS jersey in any other color except purple and black. Baltimore shouldn't owe Ed any jersey honors now.

As much as I love Ed I feel the same way.  Jersey retiring should only be done in extreme cases, Lewis and JO, both Super Bowl champions, both HOF'ers, both the best at their position for a decade+, both never left Baltimore.

Should be the requirement for jersey retirements.

But he played so well for so many years in Baltimore. He's right up there in the greatest safety of all time conversation because of what he did on this team. The guy still wants to play football and we're graced to have his best years in our books. I'm not gonna say he's definitely in on retiring his number, but he can certainly be considered.

I just think 52 and 75 are our sacred numbers. No disrespect to Reed and all he's done for us but he didnt play his entire career here.
