Of course. Only fitting that he is the first retired number. Since the very beginning no one but Ray has had the number 52, and that should never change.

Right here. The one and the only.

I never followed college fball, but when I found out Miami allowed Tavares Gooden and others to touch #52.. I was very dissapointed. The Ravens would NEVER allow anyone to wear Ray's number.. they better wear #100 instead if no more numbers are available.

Can we retire his letters too?
That wouldn't be fair to any "Lewis" who wanted to join the team! We've had great success with Jamaal and Ray, so why stop there?

No, save them for Ray Lewis III

It was a legitimate question! The Cowboys and Raiders have been blessed with some of the greatest football players of all time, yet they've never retired a number.
Yeah, they've definitely had great players: Bo Jackson, Emmit Smith, etc, but thing is, none of them DEFINED a franchise like Ray has for the Ravens. They were indisputably amazing players, some of the best, but you can write the history of the Cowboys without Staubach and the Raiders without Marcus Allen, but its impossible to speak of the Ravens or their history without Ray Lewis, and that will still be true twenty years from now, when his time as a player is done.

That's what I'm asking! As displayname reminded me, the Cowboys, Raiders, Jaguars, Jaguars and Texans have never done it, either!
that is how "those" organization choose to operate. i highly doubt that the Ravens owner and front office will allow Ray Lewis' #52 jersey to be worn by any other player. Ray is the last of the "ORIGINAL" Ravens from back in the day in 96'. and we all know what he means to the franchise, city of baltimore and the Ravens fans worldwide. IF anything..they need to not only retire his jersey but to also put a statue of him out front of M&T Bank Stadium to serve as a reminder of his greatness in playing the game!

of course we would retire this number, it is an honor and he honored our team and city with great leadership and personality.

Had they lost against Indy, I would have preferred that they do it that game frankly. However, since they won, it wouldn't make sense. However, they should retire his number fully and such that it is never used again.

The second step is of course erecting a statue of Ray Lewis at M&T Bank stadium. That is just as justified as retiring his # for good. Will it happen? I don't know, but I would be very disappointed if it doesn't!

I will risk the wrath of the moderators since the answer to this poll requires it. Any real Ravens fan would agree.

HELL YES!!!

You think if we win the Super Bowl another team will retire 52 like Michael Jordan had other teams retire 23?

At least NFL could name the defensive player of the yr trophy after him. Right now it's just an associated press thing. It could be Winner gets the ray Lewis trophy!

Don't retire it. It's not part of the franchise tradition and tradition is awfully important for the character of the team/franchise. I would say, just forbid anyone to use it out of respect like the #19. Just like with Johnny U everyone will understand why they can't wear #52 in Baltimore.

I'm pretty sure they've already stated that nobody else will ever wear #52.

In fact, they should probably work with the NFL and mandate that opposing teams are not allowed to dress a #52 when they play in Baltimore. It's just the right thing to do. :D

Way to resist peer pressure and simultaneously end the Poll's unanimity! You bring up a good point. The Cowboys and Raiders never elevated the status of their stars to immortality because they realized that it isn't a player that makes a team great, it's a team that makes a great player...

that would never happen though. No way some one like P. Willis would ever have to hang up 52. He wears that number well.

52, 75 & 3 should be the only 3 numbers that should and will be retired. I'm skeptical on # 20 but for sure 52, 75 and 3 should be retired.

19 has been retired.

It was used once but it was a mistake.
