How is the cap affected by Ray's retirement this offseason?

Everything screams Boldin will be cut. We will look for bargains in the off season and build through the draft and rookie free agents. Don't bet on signing any high priced targets in FA.

He is 6'5, and runs a 4.2 30 at 250 pounds. BEST PLAYER EVER!
James Howlett is 5'3" and 195 pounds . That said, he could push around an entire defensive line by himself. I'd love to pick him up for the Ravens. He'd play every position by himself.

Thank you all! I think that we have enough to sign Joe to a HUGE contract and still get a Long, or a Bowe, or a Melton
why would we want to sign Joe to a HUGE contract, the less the better for us.

Just stop. You clearly don't know what you are talking about. We gave Rice a huge signing bonus. If we trade him we eat the whole thing. That is the opposite of freeing up cap space. It also puts a ton of pressure on a 2nd year RB who has never had to handle a full load and isnt nearly the dual-threat back that Rice is. Taking into consideration the leadership that Ray has taken on there is 0% chance he will be traded this offseason, nor should he.
perfect rebuttal. I hate when people who have no idea how the accounting works throw their opinions around. at least I know that I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to contracts so I ask for correction if I'm wrong, but that previous comment was ludicrous even to me.

Maybe he is thinking Hershel Warker Trade where they took Aikman and Emmit..... BUT RB's are not as important in todays' NFL anymore.

regardless were stuck with his guaranteed money. May as well keep him around, plus....he's our best offensive play maker day in and day out.

Reed would be foolish not to retire. An Albert if he is let go is realistic
Yea, Ed would be foolish not to retire, lol. For you guys that think we will do just fine in the secondary if Ed were to not resign, you are out of your mind. Just b/c Ed isn't getting highlight picks game after game doesn't mean he's not real effective. I think it would be a huge blow to our D not to resign Ed with Ray leaving out the door. We still need someone on the back end with great knowledge like Ed as we have Suggs and Ngata on the front end. Ozzie needs to resign Ed b/c it's proven that FS's can play late into their careers and still make a major impact.

$4.35 savings for next year as the team wouldn't like to carry any dead money into future years.

Marquis Maze
Potential slot stud, I think Oz might take him, cut by PIT. Pretty sure he would want some revenge
He got cut? I'm surprised, he was an electric returner in college, and I thought that would do fairly well in the NFL. Did they even give him a chance on special teams?

I didn't say it was, I said it might have been.

Trading Rice in the off-season is still a good way to address our needs and free up some cap space.
Are you actually suggesting we trade Rice? Why not just trade and cut all our veteran players and fill all the positions with has-beens or never-will-bes. We could get a bunch of players for little more than a song. That way we would have lots of cap space.

his presence alone has probably prevented a lot of big plays. Similarly to how owning a big dog may have prevented a home invasion without you even knowing it. He was a deterrent and QB's will be eager to test his replacement when Ed hangs it up.

His penchant to gamble has also given up a few big plays. I would hate to see him go as I am a huge Ed Reed fan, but I will admit his play has fallen off a bit.

agreed, when he was younger he had that extra gear to recover when he gambled wrong. But you don't go from a HOF safety to a mediocre safety, he's just really good now and Ravens fans have been spoiled by his level of play, it will be eye opening when he's gone for many fans.

I disagree about Kruger. He might walk because he could get a lot of money after a break-out season, but he is a big part part of the defense. if we let him go our pass-rush could become one of the worst in the league. Other than Suggs who do we have? A bunch of OLBs that have never done anything in the league. If we keep him at a fair price we could have one of the best OLB tandems in the NFL. Kruger and Ellerbe have to be the top priorities in the offseason, after Flacco of course.

As to the discrepancy in cap room saved by Ray retiring, I believe it can be attributed to the dead money that will be left on the deal due to him retiring early. There was some signing bonus that would have been pro-rated over the course of the contract but with him retiring that money might at least partially (or wholly) go against next year's cap.
Don't misunderstand me: I like Kruger, as I said. I want him to stay. The problem is he could be expensive due to the demand on pass rushers. We do have some pass rushers but they aren't proven such as Hamilton & McAdoo. I know they are unproven, but I can see the Ravens be satisfied with them and put Upshaw at SAM full time after a year under his belt. I do not think Upshaw is a good pass rusher right now, and I see him as more of a JJ than anything else.

I hope we can sign Kruger for a good and fair deal to us considering that this is his break-out year. If we go on to win the Super Bowl, I just don't think we will be able to do it.

Are we even required to have 53 guys on our roster? If not, I am of the opinion that we should just cut/trade our entire team and then wallow in our hundred million dollars of cap space.

That's better than the Lombardi, right?

Yeah, I think we are on the same page here. It is all going to depend on the market and what the Ravens are willing to give him. Kruger can always spin it from the direction that as a pure pass-rusher he is one of the best in the business. The Ravens will counter with, we tried to make you a starter and you struggled to be a 3 down player. Honestly, I dont even know what his value would be. my guess is somewhere in the 4-6M per year in FA, but it's hard to say. If we could give him 5 years 24M I would call it a bargain.
Wayne

No one is the same at 30+ as they were in there 20's unless you juicing like Barry Bonds. Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzgy, Jerry Rice........ list goes on and on. Even with his drop off, he's still better than most if not all of the other FS's in the league. Just look at other teams and how they are getting gashed in the secondary. Ed prevents a lot of that from happening to us and he keeps the secondary in check as far as assignments and stuff. With the secondary we have minus Webb, you actually believe that they are performing this good on their on talent? We have a bunch of rejects from other teams that's making up our secondary and while they are performing pretty damn good I won't be foolish enough to believe they are performing at the level that they are un-assisted. I believe Ed has a lot to do with how they are performing.
