DE from SMU (Southern Methodist) this kid is a monster. 6'7, 280 runs in the 4.6 range and has a hell of a motor.
I was watching their bowl game against Fresno St and this kid was on fire!! 3 tak, 2 sacks, 2 FF, and a safety in the FIRST HALF alone!!!! He also has something like 17 blocked kicks in his career. He's only been playing football for 4 years. Reminds me of a mix between JPP and Watt. Not sure where his draft stock is right now, but I might think about him in the 1st round!!! Once he blows up the combine, he will rise.

He is a huge risk vs reward type of player. If he pans out it's a brilliant move and if not you just set yourself back. He has potential.

The thing with him is what's his draft value and where would he play. At 280 he's a bit too small for the five tech, and you probably don't want to add that much weight so he doesn't lose that speed. But that size also hurts his coverage ability, as it's unlikely someone that size can keep up with smaller quick guys with NFL caliber talent. If this was a 4-3 defense, which is a switch I'm a big advocate of, I'd be very interested. Now I'm hesitant because we can't afford another Kruger situation, where we bounce him around for 3 years before we get even the smallest contribution from him. This team needs immediate impact guys on defense.

I feel like we should be moving to more of a 4-3 anyway, now that Ray is leaving. Ngata and Jones as your inside guys, Suggs and Upshaw as the ends and rotating Hunt in. He was lining up at DT and DE in that game. He might be outweighed as a DT in the NFL but those long arms and speed will be a mismatch at DE.

Who would be our Mike? You need someone with sideline to sideline speed to do that. I don't know if Ellerbe has that.

A kid like Ogletree, perfect Mike in a 4-3. 3-4 is becoming the trend. It's becoming harder to find those hybrid guys. We're better suited in a 4-3. McClain would be the best mike on the roster, imo. Ellerbe is your sam. I guess we would need a wil though.

I have my doubts about Upshaw transitioning well to the 4-3. I don't see him having those LB skills in that scheme, considering he was much more of a rusher in college. More than likely he would play DE, and I don't see that going well. The assessment that we are better suited for the 4-3, while I would like to switch, probably isn't true. The only natural transition I see is Suggs to DE, and maybe Ngata to DT. We don't have a solid set of 4 DL who can consistently generate pressure on the QB, and if you can't do that there's no point in being a 4-3. While this is an opportunity to build the team in that direction, with Ray's retirement, as is I don't think it would be very successful. Maybe Ellerbe and some of the other LBs could transition, but I have my doubts.

If we moved to a 4-3.. I'd go nuts to go Arthur Brown in the second.

It's possible if McPhee loses weight to regain his speed or Upshaw can generate pressure at the DE. Arthur Jones is a 4-3 DT. That's what he played before coming here.

RE - Terrell Suggs, Paul Kruger
DT - Art Jones, Pernell McPhee
NT - Haloti Ngata
LE - Margus Hunt (3rd)/Courtney Upshaw
WLB - Dannell Ellebre?, Brendon Ayanbadejo
MLB - Arthur Brown (2nd)
SLB - Albert McClellan, Jameel McClain

I mean, with the addition of just a couple of guys.. The move could be effective.

I don't disagree, with the additions. It can't be worse than this year's defense, in any case. I still think we'd need another draft to complete the transition. Ideally we'd grab some linebackers with more speed and, in your scenario if Hunt doesn't pan out, more pass rush on the DL.

I did forget Art played 4-3 DT in college. He's shown some pressure flashes this season and has really come on as a five-tech, but he would need to be more consistent in that respect for a 4-3.
