For us geeks; the comics thread

So, what'd you think of IM3? *smirk*

You HAD to go there didn't you....

Okay...I read an article earlier about the movie. Kevin Feige basically stated in that article that people would either love The Mandarin twist or they would hate it.

I hate it. Absolutely hate it. The Mandarin was Tony Stark's greatest enemy and this film basically turned him into a plot point (I won't include any spoilers just in case people haven't seen it yet).

Also didn't particularly like the way they handled the Extremis part of the whole storyline. They may have used about 5% of the arc from the Extremis comics.

Did like the treatment of Tony and the suits, as well as his relationship with Pepper.

Good movie but neither of us will see it again. We'll add it to the DVD collection only to have the full collection of Iron Man movies.

And on the way home from the theater, I basically ripped the first two Iron Man movies to shreds (Anton Vanko was NEVER Whiplash and Sam Rockwell was about 35 years too young to play Justin Hammer...Rhodey would have never taken a Stark suit to the military, etc). and made the statement that, of all of the Phase One movies, the first Captain America was the most true to the comics (although even then...Bucky didn't fall out of a moving train....he got knocked out of an exploding plane....but anyway I digress)....

See... just stick with the Batman movies and everything will be fine. ;)  Marvel is just silly.

It depends on which story-lines you want to read. You should be able to buy graphic novels of ones post-2000 relatively cheaply. Wiki breaks down all of the major plot points of Earth-616 Iron Man, Ultimate Iron Man and all the major alternate universe's incarnations.

Does one story tend to flow into the other or are they separate entities?  I try to do things chronologically, but the comic multiverse is rather complex.

DC...the ret-con capital of the comics world. No thanks.

Ah, that reminds me of my feelings towards the Harry Potter movies.  I gave up trying to expect true-to-story adaptations after that debacle, despite the fact that I complain about certain failings of Game of Thrones.  The only one who has been close was Peter Jackson.

What's wrong with Christopher Nolan's adaptation?  Absolutely nothing.

What's wrong with anything concerning the Avengers?  Everything.  The Marvel movie producers aren't looking to necessarily appease the hardcore comic book fans.  They are just trying to appeal a new generation.

Nolan was able to do both.  Ret-con or not, The Batman trilogy has far exceeded anything Marvel has done up to this point, including The Avengers.

Oh don't get me started. I am a Tolkien purist as well as a Marvel fangirl but I refuse to hijack my own comics thread. If ya want to debate LoTR etc, drop me a message. :)

Ah I know....they can't make everyone happy. Iron Man 3 proved that.

And I LOVED The Avengers...it's become an obsession. :)

Nolan was trying to tell a story, I'm not sure he necessarily was out to appease comic book fans.  There's nothing wrong with what is going on with the Marvel movies.  People don't make movies to 'appease' any sort of fan, they make movies based on source material to make money.

While I prefer The Avengers, I think the characters are more interesting on the whole, I am excited to see how Superman turns out with Nolan producing.  I was going to brush it off and wait for DVD, but I'm going to it in theatres now after seeing some previews.  And that's a big step because I hate Superman as a character.

I wouldn't be so hard on the Marvel movies, but I when they released The Hulk in 2003 and then completely redid it 2008, only to change actors AGAIN for the The Avengers movie -- that whole Marvel thing is doomed for utter disappointment.

My only complaint about Batman was about the change-up concerning Rachel... stupid Tom Cruise, not letting Katie out of the house.  JERK!

Regardless Nolan's intentions, he did a great job of telling his version of the story and keeping some of the key moments in the storyline (like Bane breaking Batman's spine).  Now, granted, if Nolan had intended on putting someone like "Calendar Man" into one of the movies, I probably would've walked out at that point.

The Avengers movies just seem to be directed at a younger audience who have no concept of the history behind what they're watching.  I don't know, just me I suppose.

As for Superman... I'm still not sold on the Superman movie... may have to wait to hear the initial reviews.  Superman one of my least favorite characters as well.

I don't know if the Hulk can work by himself as a movie, but Ruffalo was fantastic as a supporting character.  I want a Iron Man and Hulk team up movie so bad.  I wouldn't mind giving the Ruffalo Hulk a chance to go solo though, I liked his portrayal so much more than the others.  But I'm of the very small minority that find Edward Norton to be boring as an actor.

That was the worst part of The Dark Knight.  I'm not saying Katie Holmes is a great actress, but Maggie Gyllenhaal is just revolting.  Even Nolan makes mistakes, but outside of her and Ellen Page in Inception he's done better than most.

Eric Bana and Edward Norton.....blech.

When I think of Bruce Banner, I think of Mark Ruffalo. He nailed Banner in The Avengers.

I've yet to find a Hulk that I like... sorry.  Then again, I grew up watching Lou Ferrigno.. so, take that for what you will.

Edward Norton, I wouldn't say he fits the "superhero" motif.  He's more of your psycho-thriller type.  He was fantastic in Stone, Primal Fear, Leaves Of Grass, The 25th Hour, Red Dragon and Fight Club.  Everything else, outside his realm.

And yeah, the only movie Maggie was ever good in was Donnie Darko... I still watch that movie all the time. So sad. :(

I keep waiting for one of these comic book companies to dig into the bottom of the barrel and pull out some obscure superhero though... it's coming, eventually and everyone is going to wonder what the hell they're doing.

I can just see it now... "The Micronauts".

I think The Guardians of the Galaxy, and to a lesser extent Ant-Man, are obscure enough for mainstream audiences.  I'm interested to see how people respond to those movies.

I watched Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno myself. And that cheesy '80s Hulk cartoon.

Still, Ruffalo = Hulk and I hope he does get his own Hulk movie just to see if he can pull it off. I think he can.

Not going to matter if they can't come up with an adequate story to tell.  I will have to say though, even though I've yet to see a Hulk I like, Ruffalo has done the best job to this point.  Any ideas for a Hulk movie? Villian?  I'd like to see the Hulk v. Punisher myself.

I think they should let Ruffalo do the Planet Hulk/World War Hulk storylines...although only us fangeeks would have any clue.

But that would bring in the Illuminati...and Sentry....

Just no Thaddeus Ross... or any inkling of Red Hulk... anything else I can live with.  As for the Illuminati, just about all the major players have been in movies up to this point, why not?  You going to include the X-Men & Gamma Corp into your World War Hulk?

Well, the Illuminati would bring in Black Bolt and Namor and Dr. Strange (although I hear whispered rumors of a possible Dr. Strange movie in Phase Three). I'm down for that. :D

Why not? The more the merrier, as they say. That would be difficult to bring about, to say the least. :)

Nothing stated yet. The principal actors involved are all hinting that they might not stick around past The Avengers 2. After seeing Iron Man 3, I don't think I want to see an Iron Man 4 made. Marvel has so many other awesome possibilities for Phase Three. I'd rather see them turn their focus elsewhere.

Just make it a trilogy, that's the cliche thing to do these days.

Ha ha true. Although I am fangeek enough to wish for a stand-alone Inhumans movie. Talk about obscure Marvel. :D

If you don't make it a trilogy, then World War Hulk would be next to impossible to do in a single film without rushing through it.  So, I say we go back to my idea and bring the Punisher in. ;)

Frank could use a reboot after that Godawful Dolph Lundgren movie. *shiver*

Ant-Man... really?  *smh*  There isn't going to be a bottom left on the barrel by the time Marvel is done.

At least I'm not the only one that thinks this.  It seemed like comic book people were excited about his appearance.

I say kill off Pepper Potts in The Avengers 2 and have Iron Man deal with that in phase 3.  I doubt Disney kills off a cash cow like that.  It's the figurehead franchise of their entire Avengers saga, the other heroes don't even come close.  Besides, no one likes Gwyneth Paltrow.

I just wish they could snag Hugh Jackman's Wolverine for the next film.  I like his portrayal of the character, although the scripts have let him down a few times.
