At this point of his career, Reed acknowledged that his range in the secondary isn't exactly what it used to be, but he tries to compensate for that with his understanding of the mental part of the game.

"It's definitely not what it used to be when I was 24, versus 34," Reed said. "But that's where the mental part comes into it. You slow down physically, but mentally you get a lot stronger and you understand the game more, which allows me to play the game a certain way and understand how to play the game."

that's the same thing Ray Lewis is doing now. i love you old school cats with wisdom! keep ballin' Ed.

I dread the day i log on and hear ed's retirement speech or for ray lewis's . I don't see the ravens letting ed go its obvious he knows his game is slipping and if he decides to play another year i hope its with the ravens it wouldnt be right otherwise. lets get Reed and lewis a ring this year .

If Ed decides to play another year, I just hope we don't have to go through all the hoopla we have had to the last few years. Either say you're playing and negotiate a contract or not. And keep it all private, between him and the club.

After watching Ed and Ray all these years they set that tone LB safety connection that helped lead the team into the the top defenses year in and year out ,i was looking the other day and i see i glimpse of it in SF with Willis and there Safety ,to me those are the most important leaders on a defense ,so hopefully they stay, but health is always more important ,i just wish i can see Ray and Reed hold that Trophy up this year,im very defensive minded so this has been hard for me,i was a Huge Elway Fan and i was in canton for his speech and that was very hard for me,i met him got to talk ,all be there for ray and Reed ,only difference is this will be so much harder for me ,because i was a Elway Fan ,times have changed Ray and Reed Have been there like Family to us Ravens Fans with all the charity work they do and what the bring to this city ,they are the Baltimore Ravens, and they will always be the Faces that stand out most and remind us all why were Proud to be raven Fans.

CHANGE ! Its a hard thing for most of us....but the team will plan for the future.
Joe Flacco will be due 17 mill. under a franchise tag or about 5 to 10 mill a year contract.Ed Reed & Bouldin are at the end of their contracts. The Ravens will need cap space to bring on new players for the future. The doors to castle, are open?

The 3 ravens I will always remember is J.O,Ray Lewis, Ed reed (if you don't know who J.O is you are not a ravens fan.) Phsyicality will always be the way of the raven. J.O knocked you on ur back Ray lewis will whack you one. Ed reed picks you off and shoves you out of the way to get to the endzone. Jamal lewis with his tough style of running Pollard with his hitting. T-sizzle with his Sack dances. Ngata with his royal farms chicken.

Ed Reed just like Ray Lewis is not getting better, just older. Reed is not worth a long term guareenteed contract. He still hits hard but is slower, gets hurt more and at times looked "lost" working with Cary Williams. Let Ed saddle Rex Ryan with big money and we need to move on. Ed Reed will always be reverred&loved here and is a hall of famer but his best days have already been played. Look North at long-haired Troy ,how long will his reputation keep him in the league? Good Luck Ed you were a great RAVEN.

after we win the superbowl this year we will release lewis reed mckinnie kemoeatu kindle williams and possibly boldin. birk will retire and we better go after LT jake long. flacco kruger and oher will be resigned. this is a business folks and releasing these guys is the right business move to make moving forward to the 2013 season and beyond. one other point to make is suggs will be entering his 11th year and ngata his 8th so we need to pursue a FA d-lineman that can help and freeing up $$ is vital in doing this. go ravens!!

Ray Lewis is the leader of this team. T-Sizzle brings the tenacity to our guys. Ngata puts in the heavy artillery. Reed adds in the resilency. You cannot say enough about those guys.

NFL News is reporting that Reed has been fined $55,000.00 for his "illegal" hit on Cruz. SMH. It was not an illegal hit, it was a hard hit and a good one at that!!!!

And to be honest im not that worried if he comes or goes neither. Just think about it, if he is that much of a force that no one will throw near him then that's less opportunities to get the ball. He has done marvels for the team, he has done everything you would want and need and more. But we have players already that can step up and make plays. We have witnessed it all year and plus look on the bright side, Jimmy smith and Omar brown are not corners. They both can play that fs spot and do well at doing so. I believe there is only up not down if ed reed leaves and no offense intended for an exceptional marvelous player.

I doubt the Ravens will release Reed after this season(thats if he doesn't retire). We have nobody else to put back there better then Ed Reed. And losing Reed and Lewis at the same time would be devastating. Im pretty sure Ozzie and Ed will work something out.

This is bullcrap. You know his future with us is always on his mind. He wants to get paid and we aren't going to give him what he wants. The Ravens front office has no problems cutting ties with big name players to save money and Ed will be no different. I can't imagine him on another team next season though. That would crush me.
No way man. If we win the big game Reed and Lewis will retire. There's no way they would pass out a shot to go out on top. Even Ray knows he can't pull a Favre. McKinnie will be gone, and Kemoeatu, Idk why we keep Sergio, but Cary W. isn't going anywhere. Boldin will still be here to mentor everyone else. Birk will probably retire.

I just hope they will win a Superbowl this year, so he and Ray can retire on top. I'd hate to see them retiring like this. I know Ray has one, but Ed deserves one so much. He gave his body to this franchise. I'm just getting a little emotional I guess lol. It would be weird to see the Ravens take the field without #20

I just hope Reed and Flacco are reasonable. I think we will let Reed test the market because I think he will ask for way too much. Flacco should get about 8 to 10 mil with incentive. Take the rest to fix the OLIine because that should be 2nd priority behind signing Joe!

It' a young man's game.Ed and Ray will have their day when they are inducted into the Hall of Fame and have their names inscribed in M&T's ring of honor. But move on we must. Also, the drafting must get better esp. with the D&O lines. Let's all hope they catch fire and have the two gentleman go out on top!

WOW!!!!
Ed Reed got fined $55K for the hit on Cruz!!!!

Even Cruz said it was a legal hit ...
and he's the one who got jacked-up on the play!!!

These fines are just unreal!!!
The NFL (Godell) just uses Ed Reed as the little "poster boy".
So wrong!!!!

If Ed Reed leaves which I don't think he will, he will be surly miss, I miss Derrick Mason, he should have stayed a Raven even though it was only as a receiving coach in some capacity, Ray Lewis will always be a Raven nothing less. Different officials see's different plays at different angles,I think it's good that there's some rules to protect the player but c-mon they are professionals and if they can't take the hit and bear with it then they don't belong in the NFL, Most of the NFL players knows the risk they signed up for years and years ago, there are no football players that want to end the career of another, accidents happens

If he doesn't retire they have to resign him they can't let a baltimore icon just leave not to mention no matter what any of the Reed haters say he's still playing like a top 5 safety and he's the only guy that kept the wheels from falling off the defense when it was in a even tougher spot earlier this season

Ed's not focused on his contract ... neither am I. I hate talking about what players are going to be free agents in the off-season, when we're still in the hunt for that trophy.

Let teams like the Jets worry about how they are going to deal with having a 14M a year back-up QB and what to do with the most talked about 3rd string QB in history. We've got a championship to win.

RavenNation, really sit back and appreciate what we have in Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. 2 of the GOAT, and both 1st ballot HOFers. As tough as this 3 game losing streak was on everyone, I really feel we are getting healthy at the right time, and I see Joe and the Offense getting hot and carrying us to the SB, maybe its just me wanting and hoping to send Ray and Ed out with much deserving SB rings, but this team is battle tested and has overcome alot this year, and still came away with a AFCN championship. Like Reed said after the Giants game, we have 2 more trophies to get, and the next one is the Lamar Hunt. Lets Go Ravens, no matter what Ill always be behind you guys, unlike many fans jumping ship after the 3 game losing streak. Too many fair weather, non intelligent fans in Baltimore, for as good a organization we have had to root for over the years, and you still have people wanting to fire everyone, bench Flacco for Tyrod Etc. Etc. Etc. Not saying all of our fans are like that, but look around the league, there are about 20 fansbases that would love to have a team like the Ravens to root for.

I honestly believe Ed isn't focused on contract talks right now because he understands it would be a dishonor to his teammates who go to battle with him every week. Every year the goal is to get in the tournament and make a run at the Super Bowl which is pretty much the norm around here. Only selfish players complain about contract negotiations during the season(Chris Johnson and Desean Jackson). You have the offseason to worry about those things.

This is wrong. He led with his shoulder and helmets only bumped a little when his head bounced forward. The lack of suspension proves they weren't sure. It either is or isn't and if that was then it happens on multiple times a game. Reed isn't a dirty player and it's starting to seem like NFL is targeting the Ravens. Lead the league in penalties and it seems like half of what they call are horrible calls.

My daddy used to say: "Age and treachery will always trump youth and skill!" That's basically what Ed Reed (and Ray Lewis) are saying!

Of course, their bodies do not respond with a 20-something's reflexes, but their bodies of knowledge compensates and they are both strong in their positions!

So, I can believe that Ed isn't focused on his contract while he has at least two more games to play in the 2012 season!

BUT, when his contract negotiations actually do begin,... I've a feeling it ain't gonna be pretty!

Ed Reed is a money grubbing,non-tackling malcontent way past his prime. Let Omar Brown take his spot and use the cap money to bolster the offensive line. That is a winning forumula.

Ed Reed should hang up his helmut and go for the Hall of Fame and let it be. Too old, slow, non tackling, confused on where he should be. Go out with head up high Ed and let a youngun take over. He is not even coaching material. I liked Ed alot when he was young. What is he broke or something? Go Ed, Go and I will remember you for your great times , otherwise....................

I love how people keep saying Reed can't tackle when he keeps getting flagged and fined for hitting people too hard. Yea there are times when you can tell Reed is not putting a full effort to make the tackle (when he knows the guy is going to be tackled anyway), but lets get real here. If you need your FS to be the guy to make all the tackles, you have way more issues on your defense than that. Ed Reed will usually make the tackle when it needs to get done and bottom line is, he is still one of the top five FS's in the league. If we let him go on free agency, I guarantee you, that there will be teams waiting to give him a 2-3 year deal worth millions, no questions asked.

You are missing the point. Ed has always been a helpful run stopper also, and really until the last two years, he has been unable to make proper form tackles on ball carriers. I'm in agreement with everybody else that his fines are ridiculous and his hits are clean, but that doesn't take away from the fact that Reed now HAS to lead with his helmet or dart himself at ball carriers to bring them down, because his shoulder is too weak and he can't properly wrap up anymore.

Free safeties are responsible for tackling just like corners, linebackers, and defensive lineman are. He doesn't play 25 yards off the ball everytime, and if somebody is near him, he should be able to tackle them. Whether or not he should be "responsible" for tackling guys is irrelevant. He is the last line of defense on most plays, and his responsibility is to end the play when the ball carrier is near him.

Because he's been in this league a long time, and he's set a bunch of records. He used to be an excellent tackler, but he isn't anymore.

I think people focus too much on what players did 10 years ago and not what they do currently. Ray Lewis is maybe the greatest LB to ever play the game, and this team barely misses a beat when he's off the field the last two years (if all others are healthy).

Ed Reed is not a good tackler right now, and nobody would dispute that. We need to stop looking backwards and start looking forwards. If he wants the same or more money than what he is making right now, it's a bad investment any way you look at it.

So as you said, Ed Reed is the last line of defense, does Ed usually not get the job done and at the very least put enough effort to stop the guy enough to make the tackle, or does he just not do anything and the guy runs past him and gets a touchdown? Becuase if he does, then I guess I must have walked out of the room on all of those plays. Look, as I said before, there are times when I get frustrated with Reed's tackling abiltiy, which is a pretty big deal; however, he is still by far the best FS we have and with out a doubt one of the top five best in the NFL. And that is the point I was making, that you are missing.

Last year Reed shot off his mouth and degraded Flacco in the most inappropriate way. This season he started off with whining about his contact, one which he has underperformed and one which he whined and nagged to get in the first place. Whether Reed is stuffing his own foot in his mouth by lambasting his fellow teammates or getting Knowshon Moreno's foot caught in his mouth, I wish Reed would keep that pie hole shut and learn how to tackle or just retire. His act is getting old and so is he.
