Ngata, take the money and run (waddle)!

Yeah, I think you keep Ngata if he wants to stay if you can keep him for around 4-5M. Even if he's a rotational player, his production in that rotation would be good.

I wonder what Ngata's value on the open market would be. Not many 30+ DTs with the mileage and injury history he has get paid.

Through week 10 Haloti Ngata has a +19.3 grade, the second highest grade on our defense. Only Landshark is grated better. I know that some people on this board isn't that fond of PFF, but I definitely think that Haloti is having one of his best seasons in years.

Apparently our staff writers agree http://boards.baltimoreravens.com/topic/61126-news-haloti-ngata-having-another-standout-season/

Landshark is Mosley?

PFF can be good to get a relative idea of play, but I'd have to definitely agree that he is just on a tear. Very strong presence to push the pocket as a rusher and hold the line as a run defender

Yea he had be awful the past 2 3 years tbh. Definitely better this year. I think he's put weight back on and isn't wearing down as easy

Awful?  lol, not hardly. He wasn't playing up to his standards, but continued to be a valuable contributor even while playing injured and often out of position.

if thats what you think. He had been awful. Every one except you seen it.

Its no coincidence that everyone has changed their tune now he's playing well. Its because the change in play is so fast from just last year to this year.

Landshark is indeed Mr. McPhee!

Exactly. The grading can be a bit random at times, but because the grade is cumulative you have to be making more positive plays than negative plays to receive a high positive grade. I think one of the reasons is that we have a very strong front 7. The only ones who are average are Canty and Tyson who have been given significant snaps (184 and 226). The rest are contributing positively and recently Jernigan has seen increased time. He already has over 100 snaps and his a force on the rise! Will Hill has been rated positive as well and I hope that better coverage in the back field will give more time for our front 7 to get to the QB.

Everyone but me thinks he's been awful? OK lol

yes re read this thread. You were his main backer, everyone noticed his drastic decline for various reasons, injury, lost weight etc.

But he was a shell of his former self, but you couldn't admit that.

'Kay

Quoting a two-year-old post. Haha.

Anyway, I love seeing Ngata playing a little more outside. It's helping him get his hands on the ball carrier (and ball) more often. It's gotta be more rewarding for a guy to get that kind of end game after the hard work than always being the set up guy.

Oh, you meant everyone who posted negative comments in this thread, not everyone as in everyone.

You got me curious, so I went back through and skimmed the thread. I don't think I even posted here until H8R revived it. Regardless, I never have claimed that his play hadn't declined, but I'm sure I said it was because he was injured and not because he was "taking the money and running".

Here's a couple of comments I pulled from here;

"He's been playing hurt all year, if we weren't in the playoff hunt he'd be on IR right now along with Suggs. It's not like he walked into camp looking like Cody."

"The injuries are a concern but to suggest he isnt playing as hard or staying in shape because of getting a contract is absurd. Ngata has been playing with a torn MCL all season...that doesnt just miraculously heal itself. Im sure he will have offseason surgery, but if he had surgery in season he would have had to go on the IR which would have been disastrous. I'd agree that he hasnt been as effective this season, but Ngata is also the only front 7 player who has been out there on a consistent basis all year."

"His numbers are basically the same from last season. Even without any help around him. He doesn't have Warren Sapp next to him, he's getting even more attention now after his strong season last year. So what exactly are you talking about? He had one assist vs the Broncos? He had 5 tackles the week before. What's your point? Stop whining, he doesn't play linebacker. The Broncos have a great O-Line, Peyton gets rid of the ball very quick. What do you want? Is this the best season he's had? I doubt it. But after 7 years straight of playing at an All Pro level and one season where basically everyone on defense is playing average to call him out like that is pretty absurd. Suddenly he's this lazy big guy who doesn't show up, sits on his butt all day and gained weight because he doesn't care about football or this team anymore. The good thing about losing is you get to see who the true fans are and the ones that are just bandwagoners. Why not open another topic and call out Ed Reed while you're at it. And the rest of the gang. Art Jones didn't have 2 sacks this week, he's terrible. Boo hoo. Go cry somewhere else."

Like I said, I never claimed that he was playing up to par, but he was never "awful". His contributions were still valuable to the team. And he played through injuries that would have sidelined many others. For me, that's worth a lot.

I never said he took the money abd ran either. He was injured and i think it was because he tried to slim down. But his play still declined sharply the last 2 3 years.

The last monster game i remember him playing prior to this year was the snf game against the jets which i was actually at. How many years ago was that?

While even this year he doesn't dominate like that, he is far more consistent than the years since that game.

Half of a Haloti was better than no Haloti.   I'll just leave it at that.   :D

He's been worth his paycheck this year and I think we can leave it at that.  That strip at the goal line against Tennessee pretty much saved that game.  Its 14-0 in two consecutive drives if that doesn't happen.

Mississippi State days

yeah  ohr used to tell people mcphee could smell a qbs fear like a shark can smell blood he did not need to see the qb just sense him ,  I think we are starting to see that  we are racking up sacks like crazy  if the secondary gets their act together this could be a stretch to remember

Now that people have told me it's McPhee, I think I'm starting to remember that nickname a little bit.

I love Timmy Jernigan and I've been so impressed with his ability to push the pocket from the interior. Pairing McPhee and Jernigan on the inside would give one of the better interior pass rushes, especially with Suggs and Doom on the outside. Oh man, that's good. I think Will Hill is allowing the pass rush to get better, definitely. The pass rush has really started to heat up in recent weeks, if I remember correctly, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the coverage is getting better on the back end.

Hill is definitely an upgrade back there. I think we all knew it wouldnt be long before he took over as a starter. He has impressive range.

He took over for the Steelers game, right? I remember a lot of people thought it'd be after the bye. I had hoped for the Bengals game, but it's great that he's finally asserted himself back there. I really hope the team can work out an incentive laden deal with him relating to drug usage

I believe McPheenom is is nickname, at least that's what he mentioned...

I coined Pernelephant. And that is what I call him.

Because the Pernellephant never relents.
