Ngata, take the money and run (waddle)!

I still want to see Ngata and Leach lined up an I-formation behind Joe. So we can't get rid of him, not yet anyway.

Ngata has had one bad season, boo hoo. If that were the case, we wouldn't have 90% of the people we have on our team currently.

Last time I checked, they all play the 3 and 5 technique in a 3-4 defense. Perhaps I'm wrong on that.

Well you are slightly wrong about it. The defense JJ Watt plays in is completely different than a traditional 3-4. He doesnt have two gap responsibility, instead his role is penetrate and disrupt.

Smith plays in a similar scheme, but he doesnt have the versatility to line up and play NT like Ngata does.

Fair enough! Didn't think about the scheme difference with Watt.

I was only trying to make the point that there are other 3-4 dlinemen comparable to Ngata.

I think it does make a bit of a difference with Watt. Wade Philip's defense fits him perfectly. I'm not sure he would be the same player in a more traditional 3-4. He would still be a beast dont get me wrong.

I think Geno Atkins is probably the best DT in football right now, although he plays strictly in a 4-3 front. I'm not sure how his skillset would translate in a 3-4 but I think he would still be an incredible player.

Definitely agree there. Watt would still be a force, but probably wouldn't have the 20 sacks that he has.

Geno Atkins, I'm not so sure on. I think he's strictly a penetrating tackle, but a damn good one. He might be able to play in that Wade Phillips 3-4.

Phillips 34 defense is more like a 43 in terms of the gap responsibilities and the way the front 7 operates in general.

it's pretty much 2 tackles and 5 linemen.

I'll tell YA what... The big guy still has it! He's been playing very well this year! I see him making plays again! I've been harsh on him, but really he wasn't producing! He seems to have rounded back into form! Great job big fellow, I thought you were on the way to being an extinct giant! GlAd to see you took conditioning seriously this year and seem to be healthy! CONGRATS

I've been waiting for one of his detractors to come forth and say this......you da Man!  But I have to say that I think it was health, not conditioning that held him back for a while.

Yeah, he's been playing up to his contract this year. He's making it hard to cut him or make him take a cut. It's looking like a big part of his problems have been health due to us making the playoffs every year. Having a healthy rotation should preserve his career if and when we extend him.

I was noticing how pudgy Ngata has gotten...  But he is playing well....  his pass rush has been brutal...  The tipped balls, and his interceptions?  We really can't ask for much more.

Doesn't he lead the team in interceptions?

Yes, he does.....  He has 2, I think.  We don't have many this year.  Our Defense needs to spend more time on the Juggs machine.

It's about giving props to a guy that I called out who was very underwhelming for the last few seasons, but has had a big year, this year ... I'm man enough to pay respect when someone answers the bell.

Not sure if it's his health, the increased rotation, or a mixture of the two, but Ngata is definitely starting to look like the Ngata of old.

Well he actually looks a tiny bit leaner, but you get it.

Yea he had be awful the past 2 3 years tbh. Definitely better this year. I think he's put weight back on and isn't wearing down as easy

Doesn't hurt that he has a capable player next to him in Brandon Williams either.

Totally agree with this. If Cody had developed into the dirty work guy Brandon Williams is becoming and Kelly Gregg was before him, I think we would've seen a better Ngata these past couple of years. Awesome to see B. Will come in and hold down that role so Ngata can make the splash plays we all know he is capable of.

He's putting Ozzie in a difficult position this off season. Something has to be done about his cap figure next year but I don't see him taking a hometown discount like Suggs did.

1. Don't think Suggs really took a discount. He MIGHT have been able to get more on the open market, but I don't think he could have gotten $16M guaranteed from anybody else on the market.

2. I think their situations are nearly identical. Ngata, the FO and the entire world knows that he isn't playing 2015 for this team with a $16M cap number. Its just not going to happen. He's going into the final year of his deal, and he knows he's either signing an extension or he's getting cut.

For Suggs it was a bit of a give and take. Suggs did get $16 million guaranteed up front which is pretty good but on the other hand his yearly average is relatively low especially when you consider he's rated as one of the best (if not the best) 3-4 OLB in the league by PFF.

Would Ngata do the same? He's a bit like Ed Reed in the sense that I have no idea what he would do. Like Reed he has hinted at retirement already.

Yeah, but the yearly average doesn't really mean much, considering nobody (probably himself included) thinks he's going to play five more years for this team.

He made $12M this season, and he's going to make basically $4M every year until he retires or the Ravens cut him, and I don't think anybody in the league would have guaranteed him that much compensation at age 32.
