Merged: Jim Caldwell's offense

139 posts in this topic

I expect the same playbook but I think (and hope) he use more of the plays in it, like more crossing and slant routes to Torrey and Boldin, more screens to Ray and Torrey, and plays that better utilize our two really good TEs. Really just more quickly developing plays designed for the middle of the field.

I would love for our offense to look like the Redskins offense (minus RG3, the option, QB runs, etc..), have the running game and the short, quick passing game open up the long ball to Torrey, JJ, and even Boldin and Dickson. Under Cam we didnt do that, we forced the long ball all game and made it really hard for the offense to get into a rhythm, which in turn caused alot of 3 and outs, and that really hurt the D.

The first thing I really want to see is Torrey and Boldin on slants and 10-15 yrd crossing routes, both of them would be killer in that but getting Torrey the ball on plays like that, I think, would really make Torrey and this offense the elite of the NFL. The second thing would be multiple screens a game (like atleast 3-5) to Ray, Torrey, JJ, and at the goal line Boldin. If he does those things this offense has the talent to easily be top 5.

If we hang up atleast 24 points on Denver than I'll be sold... That pass rushing defenses would have held Cam's offense to 13 points or less. I was willing to be my house on it.

I want us to start utilizing the middle of the field as well as do basic things like: slants, bubble screens, etc. I've seen us do them on occasion, but never consistently, and never at the right time. Hopefully Caldwell has a better feel for the game than Cam...

Will Caldwell have a say in the O-line makeup? I hope so, because a line of McKinnie Osemele Birk Williams (assuming Yanda is down) Oher seems to make the most sense...

I don't expect a complete turn around or anything like that. I still haven't read anything more about Yanda's injury(hopefully not too serious) All I know is I got a text from my cousin just before Arabic and said "Thank God. Good riddance."

As some said, it will be the same plays just different strategies on when to run them.. maybe more diverse playcalling too. Just can't create a whole new playbook in less than a week.

more short routes is all i want. i would think ray would actually get his touches now?
I think an argument you could present to Ray getting touches is that he often takes a while to get hot. Usually, his first 7 8 carries are what, stuffed at the line? I think it's a reason why his carries lessen. But, it is absolutely rediiculous that he broke off a TD run and Cam takes the ball out his hands vs. Pitt..

This is why I like Pierce more as a runner. He hits the hole hard every play and gets at least 3-5 yards everytime he does and that's really all you need. About 3.4 yards for 3 plays and you got a 1st down.

balanced play-calling and hopefully better in-game/halftime adjustments.

We finally what an OC that can attack..... We are best when we do that

All I'm hoping for is more balanced play calling and an end to the ridiculous number of deep passes we throw. And also getting more personnel out on the field and spreading the ball out more. I don't expect wholesale changes, just simple things that I believe we already have the personnel for.

JIM CALDWELL!! JIM CALDWELL!!! Are you freakin kidding me? Man, I don't know where to begin with this collossal idiodic move. This guy has never called an offensive play in his life. If he was any good, do you think the Colts would have fired him? When he was promoted to head coach with the Colts, all he ever did was stand on the sidelines with headphones on, and never utter a sound. Maybe he was listening to Michael Jackson in those headphones, who knows. This was pure desperation on Harbaughs part to try to save his job. Doesn't he realize that his job is not in jeopardy. This just gives confirmation to my post of yesterday, where I stated that Harbaugh always promotes from within, and never searches for the right person for the job. Good Bye Cam, and good luck coaching at the middle school level. With three games left in the season, and you are trying to figure out a way to get into the playoffs, when you team is riddled with injuries, I do not think that Jim Caldwell brings anything to the table, that is going to make your team any better. I thought that hiring him in the off season was a huge mistake, and now to promote him to offensive coordinator is absolutely ludicrous. Good Luck Ravens, you will certainly need it with these coaches.

Whats with all this fear? If you've been around NFL offenses for 35 years your qualified to call plays... i mean really, give him a chance.

That's like fans flipping wigs because Chuck Pagano was hired as a head coach for the Colts and Colts fans screaming, Chuck Pagano! Are you serious... He's never coached a NFL Team in his life!! <---- What foolishness sounds like

I really just expect more no-huddle, probably more 3WR personnel too. No massive changes.

This, and move Boldin into the slot. Black Santa here people. He will give us our wish.

Well we dont know if it's improved yet, but the signs would point towards that direction. Anything other than Cam would be an improvement as far I am concerned. But yes, I'm in the wait and see mode, at least I have something to be optimistic about now.

Reality is how much change can you really expect with three games left.

I know if I were Caldwell I would not implement any drastic changes. Three weeks to go. I have a suspicion Caldwell was as surprised by his promotion as the rest of us were. He may have had a week or two advanced notice at the most. ( pure assumption mind you )
Who knows what he has had time to do to prepare for this change.

I am not expecting any thing significant this year at all.

Regardless if you didn't like the hire, he was a well established QB coach (which he was hired for) and vouched for by Manning himself as a QB coach.

Whether he can call plays is another question though.

Although Jim says he's not making philosophical changes, he doesn't really have to for the offense to look different.

Believe it or not he helped run the Air Coryell offense in Indy with Peyton too. Bruce Arians also ran that offense in Pittsburgh.

The difference is the way the offense is implemented and where the emphasis is. Cam's downfall was a lack of, or at least poor, game adjustments and an inability to utilize personnel. I think Jim will hand the reigns over to Flacco and let him sink or swim on his own. That's what ownership and the FO want to see anyways. "Is Flacco worth a big contract or does he just not quite have what it takes to be great consistently?"

I think that the adoption of no-huddle was ownership's idea anyways and they evidently were not pleased with how infrequently it was utilized by Cam. Our offense will be better with a faster tempo. It keeps defenses vanilla and makes reads easier for Flacco, meaning he won't be holding for 5+ seconds as we have seen all to often.

I got the feeling like the players never felt it was their offense. I think Jim will be much more open to suggestions and perhaps even allow personnel to dictate scheme. If you have good players at certain positions, highlight them rather than making them adjust to your offense.

I'm excited to see what happens on Sunday!

Lol what in the world.

Who did yoy expect them to go out and get from the outside with three games to go and such a short notice? We needed somebody TODAY not later this week. The only option was caldwell. And quite frankly anyone other than cam is an upgrade.

I expect no more runs on 2and15 late in a close game. Boldin actually in the slot where he dominates. CROSSING PATTERNS

On the flip side, one can say that Caldwell was brought in to help with the No huddle and it's his input that led to alot of the No Huddle success. Maybe Cam wasn't as comfortable with the No Huddle and that's why the Offense would be so quick to get away from it. Much like you that's pure speculation on my part.

I think people are looking too deep into the play calling aspect of it. Also too much is being made about what offense will be run. I think with Caldwell's knowledge of the "passing game" the offense will remain the same, they'll just focus more on the details of how to take advantages of strengths vs defensive weakness.

Caldwell said just goal is to get the offense, just a little bit better. I have to agree, you can't put up the type of offensive numbers at home and not be a good offense. How i view it is like building a business. Cam was the start up guy, he help build it from the ground up and he got this offense to show flashes of what they can be.

Caldwell is that guy who doesn't really have the skill set to build a business, but he's a great CEO type. He's the guy you hire to take your profitable business to the next level. I'm willing to to bet the Ravens just want Caldwell to make minor tweaks and be able to take this offense to the next level, instead of stripping everything down and rebuilding it.

So look for minor changes to the offense, that leads to things being more open

Jim - let your offense be my christmas gift. Boldin in the slot, torrey running crosses and slants, more no huddle, and more rice screens.

he may not change the scheme all that much but the way he uses them should. he can't be any more stubborn to give up the offense than cam was.
