Goodell passes along idea of replacing kick-offs...

37 posts in this topic

This will never (hopefully) pass. As Pu eluded to, offenses could just keep "going for it" as opposed to kicking (punting) after a score. This would have a major overall effect on the entire game, not just this part.

Boo, Rog!

This is an awful idea. Roger Goodell needs to understand that the players sign up to play a violent game. They know how dangerous it is they have been playing it for their entire lives. If players are concerned about life-changing injuries they need to choose a new profession. They know the risk they are taking every time they take the field and if anything it is their own fault that they do look at the consequences that might arise after their careers. Goodell is in charge of THIS game the way it is today, he has no business in changing the way game is played.

I agree but when you have hundreds of players suing the league for injuries they sustained then what is he to do? If he doesn't put forth change then the league stands to lose millions of dollars. A lot of the injuries are difficult to fully prove, too, and some players may just be doing it as a money grab - smelling blood in the water. For the players who do sustain lasting injuries, there needs to be better care, something that the NFL has taken steps towards.

I don't think replacing kickoffs will happen, at least not forseeably, it's just one of those things that is sent as a flyer; I'm sure there are a lot of idiotic ideas bounced around during the offseason.

Always remember that Roger Goodell works directly for the owners. They hired him, they're keeping him employed, and he is carrying out their agenda - cash.

(idiotic) ideas are bounced around all the time to see how the public reacts to them... what i see the league working on behind this idea is to shorten the pre-season by 2 games and add two more teams to playoffs so it puts something back... can't see the players going for the 18 games regular season as much as the owners will push it

This is basically what I said in the expanded playoff thread but no one bought it. I said cut to three weeks of preseason and add in another bye. Season remains the same length, players get more rest, 2 additional playoff games, and it serves as maybe a jumping-board for an 18-game season. I don't want there to be an 18-game season, I think the league is perfect at 16, but that's what the owners seem to want.

agree with the extra bye week... especially now with thursday night games all year long... a team should get a bye before their thursday night game, playing two games in four days is non-sense taking into account all this player safety talks (as ed put it lol)
