J. Smith returns vs Johnson vs Graham

63 posts in this topic

Jimmy Smith will probably come on in the nickel package and shift Graham over to the nickel. Jimmy won't start upon his return.

Jimmy has the chance to be one of the NFL's best. In fact, he has done very well against everyone but the Texans. And we all played like crap against the Texans.

He basically shut down Austin, the Eagles game was not his fault, the chiefs didnt score a single TD, Greg Little is talented, as is Gordon, and got injured that game then he was hurt. Oh, and the most important Stat is, he has given up one TD all season. In the Houston game. He did not give up one @Clevland.

I'd like to see the stats he has for giving up big plays. Someone had a stat that he was the 96th best corner in the league at one point I don't know where that is now

The Stat I measure CB's by is TD's and he has only given up one! So has Webb, but almost every other pass TD was on Cary! The other ones were TE receptions.

i just wanted to say why are people calling jimmy smith a bust? it's only his second year. i remember a couple years ago when everyone called webb a bust after his second year and look how he has become a shutdown corner now.

He aint a bust, people just expected him to be shutdown immediantly. Webb and Jimmy will be deadly next few years.

He is already above average in my eyes. Shutting down Austin is no easy task. He held him to two receptions. Romo knew that Cary could also be picked on more, but still threw Austins way. I have us taking Rhodes in my latest mock, to have a dynamic CB trio. I dont like CARY

Start - Williams and graham , 3rd corner - jimmy , 4th - Johnson /brown/Jackson

Graham has shown he deserves more playing time

Thats not a very good measuring stick. What if the CB gets burnt up and down the field then they rush for a Touch down....is that on the CB or the run defence? I measure a CB by how many catches he allows/game, and by my ruling, Jimmy is no top tier CB....yet, I've not given up on the lad, just not impressed thus far.

Cary and Graham should remain the starters.
Jimmy will probably be used in nickel packages. Chykie Brown has showed why he should be burried down the depth chart, so his defensive show is over.

I don't think Brown's been that bad. What do you particularly dislike about Brown's play? Lol, honestly, he reminds me a LOT of Cary Williams in the way he plays, just without the interceptions. Brown's also in his second year, so it's not like he's been around the road a few times. I'd relax on him a bit.

As for the question, I'm not sure. But to be honest, the Ravens won't start him over anyone at this point. Harbaugh likes to make guys earn the spot. He doesn't give them anything unless they are All-Star players. I expect Graham & Williams to start until Smith proves he can hold the starting job. He'll probably play a lot of nickel, though.

And what's with all this hate on Jimmy Smith? What do you guys expect, Revis? I mean, it's his second year for the love of God. It's difficult to transition from NCAA to NFL, especially for cornerbacks. I think ALL of Smith's issues are mental, such as his stupid biting on double moves and his dumb penalties. If he gets his mind right, he'll get those things fixed. Webb had quite a few penalties early in his career that cost us big. As another poster stated, many questioned whether he would be our #3 CB, let alone our #2 or even #1 before 2011.

I believe in Jimmy Smith. I think his play in the AFCCG showed what he can be, and he can be a shutdown corner. Give him time.

And Cary Williams minus the interceptions leaves you with a weird mix of something just short of total crap.
Basically what I mean is, Chykie hasn't been that bad for a deep backup, but we can do MUCH better.

And I'm willing to hold off on calling Jimmy a bust-but like you said he has to prove his worth. He will do that as the #3 corner for now.

I hear you, but here's my point:

Cary is in his 4th year? It's 4th or 5th, something around that. The point is he is a lot more seasoned, so to speak, than Brown. Brown's in his second year, did not have an offseason his rookie year, had no game experience last year if I am not mistaken, and has seen limited in-game experience except in the preseason. Brown was also considered a project, one whom is still developing. Much like Jimmy Smith, it's too early to truly judge him. But to say his play is comparable to Williams, a CB who many considered BEFORE his interceptions a quality #2 CB or at the very least a solid #3 CB is pretty impressive in my opinion.

When you compare the fact that Brown plays pretty similar to Williams minus the interceptions, acknowledge that Williams has talent and is a decent CB despite his MANY flaws, I think you'll realize that Brown's played pretty well. I'm not saying he's a quality #3. I'd compare him almost to Danny Gorrer, whom I liked. I think you're being a little too harsh on Chykie Brown. Danny Gorrer also had a lot more experience than Brown had when he played. He also had a significantly better pass rush to make him look better.

The fact that Cary could make the Pro Bowl and Webb didn't last year is a crime.

Don't bench either, Williams and Graham as #1 and #2, Smith #3. Brown #4, Johnson/Jackson #5. I'm guessing since Smith will be back soon, and Johnson will be as well, Jackson might not be active.

 That was on this very website, friend. Fandom is fickle. Webb didn't do himself any justice, but the guy had just come off his surgery and all that. I mean, some are calling for Harbs' head and he's been nothing short of excellent so far as our head coach. Meh, it is what it is. Jimmy's had a rough go of it. His first game he gets injured (and EVERYONE was SUPER mad at Harbs that day for putting him on special teams, lemme tell ya) and then he comes back and he's kind of shuffled into that nickel package stuff. Webby gets hurt, he starts and bites on some double moves and looks like the second year player/non starter he is and people want to label him a bust. Well, don't take it to heart. That's fandom like I said, and we'll all love Jimmy when he can get back on the field and actually STAY on the field and get some actual starting experience.
