Javon Belcher, KC Chiefs LB, reportedly shot himself at the stadium. More to follow.

Channel 5 in KC confirms a Chiefs player has committed suicide and killed his girlfriend at the practice facility. Very sad indeed.

Mod note: Remember to keep the politics out of this!

I heard in another report that he turned the gun on 5 teammates but it doesn't seem true. Prayers go out to the family.

Unreal...one would imagine that these guys appreciate their lives and their current position, and understand how blessed they really are. I can't even put it into words. To be one of the coaches standing there as the player turns the gun on himself? Whew. And they have a 2 month old? So many lives affected by one selfish decision

It just puts things into perspective that football is only a game. Nothing is bigger than life itself. Prayers, thoughts, and condolences to those affected, especially the baby.

Reports say the girlfriend is still alive, albeit in critical condition. Hope she pulls through.

Prayers for her recovery.

Also being reported, Chiefs have requested the game tomorrow to be post-poned. League has advised Panthers to travel as planned though.

Wow..... I don't know what to say, absolutely speechless. Prayers go out to Javon's family and his girlfriend's family.

If the NFL is smart, they would post pone the game and play it Monday or Tuesday.
While I'm not a hard heart, there's no way that happens. You'd have tens of thousands of ticket holders, vendors, team staffs, TV and radio personnel, etc., etc. affected by a change like that. I feel for the families involved, but thats too much to ask of all the other people involved in an NFL game.

You have to look at the logistics of this situation though. This happened at the stadium, not his home. The possibility of a crime scene still being there is plausible. We're talking about two teams at 1-10 and 3-8. The game holds no playoff implications. Also, there are reports that this happened in front of coaches/players. This could affect them greatly.

There comes a time where you have to look at this logistically, and while the business side may suffer, there's the potential for a lot worse that can come out of this by having them play the game.

This. Even if we take out the emotional aspect of this, does the NFL wanting the game to be played as scheduled really trump the police and their crime scene?

And, as stated, this game has absolutely no effect on the playoffs. I'd say to just cancel the game altogether.

Agreed. The Chiefs and Panthers can play 15 games this season due to the circumstances.

You just can't cancle it. Even though right now at this moment is not the time to think about it, but this game will be important in deciding the draft order.

I don't know what I would do if I was the NFL. Waiting later this week and making it a prime time game just doesn't seem right to me either.

Jovan reportedly killed himself at the stadium and undoubtedly left evidence there.

I'm aware of that, but that still wouldn't make it a "crime scene".

Yes it can, he shot himself at the stadium according to reports which makes it a crime scene.
It's not semantics. A suicide scene is handled completely different than a crime scene. (I have a long time friend that has a CSC biz.)

Apparently happened in front of, or at least in the presence of, Pioli and Crennel.

So sad!
This does not prevent the state of Missouri from recognizing suicide as a "common law crime" for civil, if not criminal, proceedings. The civil aspect is particularly relevant because we may see the surviving members of the Blecher family (justifiably) sue the NFL for increased medical-monitoring a la the class action lawsuit filed against the NFL earlier this year. While I agree with the premise that the NFL is not going to cancel tomorrow's game, the location of Blecher's suicide should (and probably will) be treated as a crime scene.

He could have carried evidence to the stadium regarding the crime scene at home. Regardless, the media scrutiny and police presence will still make this game difficult to be played, on time at least

The civil aspects are irrelevant in relation to how the scene is handled. My point was in response to a previous post that the game would be canceled because the stadium was a "crime scene" and would need time to gather evidence. Thats simply not true, its not a "crime scene".

Again, you're arguing semantics. I misspoke. Basically, they aren't just going to clean up and go home. There's still going to be a heavy police presence around the scene.

Again, I agree that the NFL will not cancel this game, but (also again) the stadium parking lot may very well be a crime scene under Missouri common law and should be handled as such.

Even if Missouri is not one of the states that treats suicide as a common law crime:

That is, the gun.

He had a beautiful family and a great life, and he just destroys it all. It might be better to put the baby girl up for adoption in a good home and save her a lot of pain in the future.
