The Ravens’ season statistics aren’t typical of a 9-2 team. Their opponents have gained 271 more yards, generated 27 more first downs and averaged over five more minutes of ball possession per ga...

I don't call it luck, I call it football. Luck didn't convert 4th and 29, Ray Rice, Boldin and Flacco did that and so on.

Well, Im sure all of us as Ravens fans know that but, Apparently we are the worst 9-2 team ever .. The only way we can prove we are Legit is to beat the Broncos & Giants which i know we can do.

& Also, Ray is a really great player but, I feel like with his age and now coming off this injury, he is actually going to make our defense worse. He is definitely an emotional leader, but .. I dont know if he can really help our defense

This is true, although I think the Dallas game came pretty close to luck. But on the other side of the coin, we lost the Eagle's game which we probably should have won due to outplaying them and having little league refs officiating. Some wins this year may be called ugly, but we definitely outplayed most opponents.

The 2012 Ravens have proven to be the true cardiac kids. Seems as though we play to just to be in it at the mid-point of the 4th quarter before focusing on the final kill shot. I'm not saying it's a bad thing necessarily, especially this year with all the good fortune we've had. Makes for a stressful 3.5 hrs though each weekend for Ravens Nation... haha.

Go Ravens! Win it any way you can!

I remember all the ups and downs we endured during the Super Bowl run in 2000!

This, is how we do it! I firmly believe we're beginning to reach our peak, especially on defense as we get closer!

Couldn't come at a better time in the season as Houston seems to be slipping back to earth! They are like the 1999 Titans we beat!

So you're saying Ellerbie and McClain are better than Ray? Ellerbe has definitely stepped up this season, but he still makes a lot of mistakes. He still has trouble with coverage and misses tackles. McClain has been pretty solid for us, but I think what we're getting out of McClain right now is the best we're going to get. He wil always just be that solid #2 guy. Ray is still our best ILB. The only thing Ellerbe has on Ray is speed. Ellerbe is better in Blitz packages, but that's about it. Ray tackles better than both Ellerbe and McClain, reads defenses better, has better instinct, has better knowledge, and is by far the better leader.

When he comes back and our defense doesnt perform as well as they have (AKA: @Chargers last year) Youll notice we are good as is.

Hit hard.
Don%u2019t give anything away.
Let your defense keep you in it until something good happens.

When we went on our SuperBowl run in 2000, and we played the Raiders in Oakland for the AFC Championship, and Dilfer hit Shannon Sharpe on a slant from DEEP in our own territory, and Sharpe took it the distance... I had a very distinct feeling that this MUST be our year. It wasn't feeling lucky, it was more like confidence in the destiny of the team that year.

Well I don't know about you all, but I had a similar feeling when we moved the chains on that 4th and 29 in San Diego last week. #RavensNation

That San Diego game last year was a blowout because Rivers was dropping back and completing passes down field to his receivers at will. That didn't have anything to do with Ray. After that game, the defense was very good again. Ray Lewis was still leading this team in tackles by a lot before he got hurt. He will still make this defense better.

Look folks I have 1 Jersey #52 ! Saying that Ray does not show that same POP when he hits people or as he tries to shed a block. NO doubt there are some good hits. His speed is OK still, he lost all that weight. BUT I believe with Ray in in 1-2 downs a series, and swap the other 2 to their individual strengths. McClain Stuffing the run and Ellerbe Covering the TE and rushing the passser will keep this D improving. With a heavy Heart Ray is not a 3 down MLB any longer!

luck is just preparation meeting opportunity. tomorrows game is an opportunity to lock up the division, and i think they will be prepared to do it. (i know the bengals have to lose, but theres nothing the ravens can do about that on sunday.)

Luck is something that happens to people/teams that are prepared when an opportunity arises. We are well coached, well trained and have a ton of heart. When we pull out close wins it just shows we have more drive down the stretch than the other teams.

Well put Mr. Eisenberg!! I think people like to overlook the things that the Ravens do well and the things that they have overcome, simply because they aren't popular stats. They're stats that matter, as the 9-2 record shows.

John Eisenberg you play both sides of the ball in this article the Ravens are very lucky to be 9-2. I know alot of Raven fans watch these games with rose colored glasses but to say this team is not lucky sitting on 9-2 with the way they struggled against horrible teams is amazing.

Remember when we were said to be "jinxed" when we played the Squealers or Patsies?

Well, we now have the personnel to beat them at any time! That ain't luck,.... that's preparation, as hugostiglitz so aptly illustrated!

i really dont think we are lucky. The ravens have always been a team to play to their opposites level. Have never been a patroit team constantly blowing teams out by 20 or more points. I personally have seen alot of good out of this season.

I wish we had luck..... I'd trade Joe flacco for andrew luck anyday.... No offense flacco but Luck was the bets prospect since elway..... I love flacco as our franchise QB but i'd still rather have drafted A-rod than mark clayton. Flacco is a very good QB reminds me of Big ben with his suprising athletiscm.... He has a strong arm he's very very durable.... He can take hits And he can hit you right on back.... Just ask Boldin those balls he catches are bullets

not even being cocky (for my ravens) the falcons are good but they are not blowing the ravens out. However, i might have said the same about the teaxan game lol. We both are home town kinda of teams. If our defense can get pressure which i beleive they could then i could see us winning that game. Nevertheless, the think flacco is a better QB than Ryan. Flacco has extremly less talent on the wr end. Ryan has the110% juice. With his weak arm he would never be able to take full advantage of the wrs

Correction, we are wearing purple colored shades...Duh!! But seriously, this is the best Eisenberg piece I have ever read (and I have read a lot of them.) A lot of analysts cough up a lot of numbers and interpret them totally wrong. This is insightful, and very astute (may I dare say realistic) view of the Ravens.

Look you don't have to be a realist, pessimist, or apologist to be a real fan. All you have to do is want for the team to win and it's what our guys have done. I am not any less of a fan for being an optomist any more than I am more of a fan for being skeptical.

The bottom line is we have been very lucky, and that luck goes both ways. We COULD be 2-9, or we COULD be 10-1 (Eagles game was a win in my eyes) but we are ACTUALLY 9-2. Let's make it 10-2 tomorrow!

Great article John. Taking care of the rock, stingy red-zone D and stellar special teams have all been overlooked but key factors for the team this season.

Well, to say our 9-2 is down purely - or even largely - to luck wouldn't be fair at all, that's true.

But it's also true that there was a streak where luck played an integral part in our W's - like against the Chiefs and then the Cowboys next week. In KC it was that incredible fumble Cassel had with the ball in his hands in our endzone. That was luck. Then, next week, the missed field goal fr the Cowboys the last second.

Both would have killed the game. Saying these W's had nothing to do with luck would be just as untrue.

What's really important is that we seem to be out of that awful ditch, right when we needed.

By the way, Mr. Eisenberg, wasn't it you who wrote after the Cowboys-game that it was not the case of us finding a way to win it, but rather the Cowboys finding a way to lose it? I would classify it as "luck"...

bio, was it luck that forced the Cowboys into a 50-plus yard FG attempt or was it the Ravens D that kept them from getting any closer than the 35 yard line?

Luck is nothing more than a word, no real meaning. Someone that wins the lottery (to me) is not lucky. They simply put themselves in a position to win, very low probability of winning but they bought the ticket, hence their position to win.

Same thing with the Ravens. They put themselves in a position to win every game, minus the Texans game where they put themselves in a position to lose.

Bottom line this is a good, very good team. Parcells is right, you are what you're record says you are.

All the doubters keep on talking, we will keep showing you how to win ball games!I am taking names of who is not respecting the Ravens, '' As Terrell Suggs, would says They are going to start showing some respect, or we will take it our us." I know one name that probably would say the Ravens are Lucky, that being Skip Bayless! That, why we need to ban Skip Bayless from going to Baltimore,Maryland! Go Ravens!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is simple for me. For anyone that wants to trash the 9-2 record or down play it as if the Ravens aren't a good team, ask yourself this.

Would you rather win ugly or lucky all the to the Superbowl OR lose a pretty game in the AFCCG, when you're clearly the better team like last year?

Both the Pats and NYG were lucky to be in the Super Bowl last year. However that Monday of Super Bowl week, nobody outside of SF and Baltimore were talking about the 49ers and Ravens.

Being the best or a perfect team in week 12 means nothing. Ask the Packers, Colts, and Pats how that worked out for them. They all were pushing towards undefeated season by week 12 in recent years and look how it turned out for those teams. Lot of wins...Super Bowl Trophy went to someone else

It's not luck, it's just playing "less bad" than your opponent. That's also known as being better than them, which is why we won the games. KC fumbled in a crucial situation, we didn't. Brandon Weeden threw a pick-6, Joe didn't. Ben got sacked badly for about the 1,000th time in his career and got a serious injury... Joe protects himself and hasn't missed a start. Our defense stopped the Chargers from converting crucial 3rd downs, their defense didn't stop our best player from getting 29.5 yards on 4th down.

It means we can't win if we don't play our best (Houston), but it means if we keep it close, we'll win more times than not. If we'd had that element in this team last year, in the AFC CG, we'd have been playing in the Super Bowl.

When that very ugly streak was on, the problem wasn't winning ugly. Every team has terrible games every now and then... The Packers were formidable last season, still they simply sucked in KC. The problem witht he Ravens then was that having bad games seemed to be the default setting: the Browns, KC, the Cowboys and then Houston: one terrible, hopeless game after another. We won 3 of these but all three were wins down the wire, with all three, rather weak opponents having the chance to win, or at least take it to overtime. The problem was the tendency. This seems to have gone with the bye: since then it's an obviously better team. We now have every chance to take this formidable 3-game streak most of us conidered as the worst stretch of the schedule (@PIT, @SD, PIT) 3-0 - and no luck is involved here. Even the most shaky play (4th&29) was resolved by a tremendous performance, not luck.

You could just as easily say we could have been 10-1 if not for bad luck in Philly with a questionable offensive PI call that erased the go ahead score. I'm sure everyone thought the Giants were lucky to get into the playoffs both in 2007 and last year.
