WHY?
Jacoby certainly isnt gonna lose the return job, and if the brass starts worrying about him getting hurt or gassed, Deonte is next in line as he was returning well also.

and we certainly dont need anymore help at WR, we havent activated 6 yet and he'd have to push past Torrey, Anquan, Jacoby, Dennis, AND Tandon to get any kind of PT. And nothing he'll do on ST will be that special.

i dont get it.

I think Jacoby as kick returner and David Reed (if he can stay healthy) as punt returner can be a dangerous duo

The only thing I really see David Reed doing is punt returns and other duties on special teams. Otherwise, I don't really see how he could contribute as a WR, unless we have some injuries. Honeslty, I do like David Reed; he has talent. But, I'm just not really seeing where he fits in besides what I mentioned above. A lot of people don't like him just because he had two back to back bad games, but other than that, he was a good KR. However, you can't take Jones out at KR, he has been deadly there, and he has also done a great job at PR, but I could see them maybe rotating Reed in at PR.

I just don't understand it yet. It is nice to have some depth at returner, and it would be great to protect Jacoby a little. When I heard during the game that he might've had an ankle injury, I thought "Oh no, not the dreaded Lee Evans' high sprain!". That said, Jacoby is the better returner, and has thus shown that he has good hands. Unless the intention is to put Jacoby out on the field as the #3 guy on a regular basis, I don't get D. Reed's role, yet...

As much as I dislike Reed, this is a solid decision. Jones isn't anything special as a punt returner thus far(though personally I think that has more to do with the defense letting the other team march right into our territory in past weeks), so Reed can take over there and keep Jones fresh for offense. He can also back up Jones on kickoffs, because when Doss went in, he might as well have just fair-caught everything for all the good he did us.

you know...the other 31 squads in the league have both competent kickers and coverage teams too. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. Especially on punts, even the best returners rarely escape punt coverage for much gain, its always a low percentage play for the receiving team.

They most certainly are not, Dickson reportedly didn't suffer any lasting injury, and we already have a backup tight end.

Jones returned a punt for about 20 yards in overtime. While it's great to have him fresh for the offense he is just to valuable on special teams. Even if you did want to save Jones for offense Deonte Thompson is a better football player as a UFA then Reed will ever be.

depends...how confident do you feel having a stringy 190 lb receiver block a 260+ lb DE?

Fair enough. But if memory serves, we brought Jacoby in for his punt returning ability, and he got the kick returning job because Reed was injured. Now we're at the bottom of the league in punt return yards. We have been playing some killer punters, though. Like Scifres, who kicks sixty yard punts like its nothing.

I do like the fact that he can provide more depth at the WR position. As a PR, I like Jacoby Jones right now. But maybe Reed should be given a chance to redeem himself after those two fumbled punt returns from last years Seattle game!

Well we're actually round the middle of the pack in punt yardage, which is neither horrible nor surprising considering our defensive woes in the early half. cant return punts if you cant force them.

Deonte shined in kick returns early on and in preseason so he held the job for a while until something went bad one game, cant remember exactly what, thats when Jacoby got in.
Jacoby was brought in for his return ability in general, overhauling all of special teams including coverage was the goal this off season.
We also needed a WR3 though, and since things suddenly got deep at return man, they just kinda ran with it and kept Jacoby for offense far as i could tell. Thats what i wouldve done.

Are you serious? Unless Jones is hurt, I wonder what's the purpose of this move? I guess more to come.

You're right. I didn't check the actual stats until now. Deonte fumbled against the Chiefs, and would have given them a TD, if Cassel hadn't fumbled from our one yard line.

Why make a change at returner at all? Jacoby has done just fine and the special team chemistry is there. Reed was likely just added for depth.

Activating Reed is mindboggling. We dont need him as a kick or punt returner. Jacoby Jones won us 2 games with his returns(Dallas and Pittsburgh games). We dont need another WR either. No way Reed should see time over Tandon Doss, who has the best hands on the team. Makes absolutely no sense to me. Still waiting to see Adrian Hamilton get a chance.
