Offensive Coordinator Options for 2013

253 posts in this topic

I don't see Reid taking anything less than a head coaching position.

I don't see Garrett coming here, where he turned down the HEAD coaching position, to coach offense. Garrett comes off as gutless to me as well. Play calling for him this season has looked questionable. I just don't know if that's him or Romo.

I'm with Norv on this one. I actually like the Air Coryell. Cam's version just seems so much more bland and it seems like he calls plays at the wrong time.

LOL at Reid coming here. He will be a head coach again.

Hue Jackson is an interesting suggestion.
If I were Andy Reid, I would not want to be a HC again after the way things went down in Philly. I would either take a year off or go somewhere to coach a QB and run his scheme, which he was very good at both in Green Bay and Philadelphia. Maybe, you are right though so I'll float Marty Mornhinweg as a candidate. I can't see him staying in Philly when Reid leaves.

I wouldn't dare switch OC's mid season, but in the off season I would go with Hue Jackson maybe Jason Garret depending on how the cowboys do.

I'd rather not recycle a former HC. Why not look to the college ranks or to offensive assistants on our own or other teams?
Wasn't serious. I'd prefer Caldwell.

K-Dog as Vice OC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! jkjkjkjkjkjkjk (Unless you really want that)
No, cause I know for a fact, I can not do the job.
I also think despite numerous claims otherwise no one else here could either.
I am just wondering if any one here has enough round objects in their drawers to send in their resume.

Billick!
Please do not even kid about that. The "Offensive Genius" is awful. Look who he made us watch week after week, yup Boller and he really wanted Batch but he was gone so he picked Boller. So i would hate to see Billick anywhere near our offensive plans. He skated by to a Superbowl win and that was because of the Defense was awesome. Billick has fell into some nice situations but he himself could never build a decent offense.

What about Ken Whisenhunt? He made the Cardinals look like an offensive juggernaut a couple years ago. He'll probably go since the Cards are God awful.

Norv Turner is an Air Coryell coach. A better Coryell coach than Cam, but still one that runs the same system, that has not been working out for us for so long.
Jason Garrett, if he becomes available, would be a better choice.
I shall smacketh your face for uttering such nonsense!

But since we're all in fantasy land, I'll like to join too!

1) Sean Peyton (If I gotta make 'em Head Coach, so be it!)
2) Norv Turner (Yeah, we'll go deep... correctly!)
3) Hue Jackson (Good times Flacco had with the guy)
4) Me (Because I'm an X's and O's guy and I can handle the job, bros)

Not like we didnt know already, but they just said on the NFL network that Cam is the problem with Baltimore, no creativity...

Harbaugh will say he is doing a great job...

I'd take any of the following, in no particular order:

1) Norv - I'm not a fan of Air Coryell but he can run it like it's supposed to be run
2) Wilbert Montgomery - has my trust since he knows our RBs and has done good things with them
3) Jim Caldwell - he has Joe's trust
4) Hue Jackson - a lot of our guys are still close with him
5) Jim Zorn - again, has the trust and respect of several guys on this team
6) Al Saunders is another guy whose been here and seems to have the trust of some of the players.
7) I don't think we could get Tom Clements out of Green Bay now, but I would have loved to have him - if he could get Favre to cut down on interceptions he can help anybody
8) A lot of people keep bringing up Chip Kelly - I don't think he'd leave Oregon for anything less than a HC gig, but it's worth a try.

How about Cam using the middle of the field today?

Took him until 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter to do so.
Yes.I saw both Boldin and Smith running crossing patterns. I was shocked. If I know the deep sideline is their bread and butter I'm sure its no secret to the league's defenses either.

Wrong thread, guys. Discussion of the play calling goes here: http://boards.baltimoreravens.com/topic/49691-week-12-comments-on-cam-and-the-offense/

This thread is about who replaces Cam.

I trust Cam's judgement because he has earned it; our fourth quarters have been miraculous time and time again....

HOWEVER, we cannot continue to wait until our opponents have a lead, their defenses falls back into conservative coverage and allow Cam's slow developing plays march us down the field at the last possible second. The best teams, ie in the playoffs, will continue to aggressively go after Flacco and not allow Cam's slow developing plays develop.

ALSO, when we do on a rare occasion have third and short (usually Cam's unmethodical, inconsistent, drive killing, high risk, high reward, slow developing plays keeps us at third and long), STOP RUNNING OFF TACKLE, MAN UP AND GUT IT DOWN THE MIDDLE ON THIRD AND INCHES.

> Its math, if you do not run in a straight line and run outside its no longer third and inches, its third and yards. <

Ps Cam, Perhaps put in our franchise running back, Ray Rice, on 4th and inches, and the game on the line. (I don't care if there were 9 in the box. If you are going to run it anyway, and yes Flacco did check out of the original run play to the left and decided to STILL run it to the right, you might as well run the shortest distance in a trenches battle for the first down.)

i think caldwell could make this ravens offense soar.
who cares if he doesn't have experience, you don't need it to be better than cam. i think he'd pick it up quite well and give the offense to joe since all i've heard is positive feedback between the 2.

I don't know who he is, but maybe the offensive line coach from the 49ers. His unit is pretty damn good. He's worked with Jim Harbaugh and his creative offense. He may know a thing or two about offensive football.

Wilbert Montgomery, Hue Jackson, Sean Payton (hey, i can dream!), Norv Turner, or Al Saunders.

Flacco had 2 of his best years when Saunders was here as an offensive consultant, of course a lot of that credit could go to Jim Zorn as well. Sean Payton is Sean Payton. I've pulled for Montgomery since last year, he's familiar with the RB's obviously, and they have always performed well under him. I think the same could be said for the offense as a whole.

I would put Norv Turner and Hue Jackson at the top of my list. Norv Turner runs a system not too different from Cam's but a lot more creative, so it wouldn't be a total overhaul of the offense. That kind of consistency could help protect us from having a rebooting period where Flacco and the rest of the offense are still trying to adjust to the new way of doing things (think the first six weeks of this season for the offense). Jackson has a strong relationship with Flacco and the Raiders offense was pretty potent with him as OC, including a very effective running game. He probably wouldn't make the offense worse, if nothing else.

I am stilling willing to do the job by following a 5 point plan.
1. Eliminate all end arounds
2. More Two TE sets going over the middle
3. Implimant a 3 WR set, with Q in the slot
4. Use Rice more as a reciving weapon
5. More no huddle.
Hue Jackson or Turner. Turner had the Boys win 3 SB's when he was OC.

Those first 3 alone would win u my vote, they are so obvious that it would seem common sense to do, Yet Cam makes those decisions seem like Meta-Physics or Calculus lol

This will sound crazy, but Cam doesn't have a bad system, he just doesn't run it efficiently. He doesn't put his players in position to win often enough. Because of this, the Ravens might just look to promote within. Kind of like they do on the defensive side of the ball.

A unknown young guy like Jason Brooks, might be given a shot. Going forward, this is Flacco's offense. Flacco wants that spread uptempo type and Harbs seems to want it, so that is what will happen. At M&T Bank in 5 games, Flacco is averaging 322.4 yards 2TDs and .6ints. If you average that out over the course of a 16 game season, thats 5,158yds 32TDs 9ints. To me that means says Flacco thrives in the no huddle up tempo offense, so the Ravens definitely will stick with this offense imo.

The challenge to me is getting that same production on the road. How do you do that, you have to put your offense in a position to succeed early. How, you create matches that take advantage of a defensive weakness. The Texans weren't/aren't good enough at the LB and Safety position to match the Ravens talent at TE/RB and in the slot. That should have been the plan of attack early in that game, but it wasn't.

So why Jason Brown, he's the offensive quality control assistant and he's in charge of scouting the opposing defense to help game plan for game. Other then Cam, he probably knows the offense as good as anyone, because he helps with the Wrs and Rbs. He coached WRs in a spread offense in 2008.

Now i don't know if this guy is qualified to be a OC in the NFL, but i think with a heavy input from Caldwell running this no huddle, uptempo sytle and Brooks ability to scout other teams on flim and put together a gameplan with Flacco heavily involved, would be good for this offense.

So I say keep the system, but add a emphasis on actually attacking defenses and feature your offensive weapon. Put the offense in Flacco's hands 100% of the time and just allow the OC and QB coaches to give him the proper information on what to look for and how to attack certain defense.
