Bringing Norv in makes sense because the offense HAS been tailored to the Air Coryell over the last 5 years under Cam. We've drafted tall physical receivers and have a strong armed quarterback. We have the personnel to run the offense, just not the brains behind it to run it effectively. With Cam locked up for two years I doubt it. However, I will say that I dont want Norv here.
Why? I simply don't like the Air Coryell system and I dont think it plays to our offenses strengths. If Norv is gonna come in here and try to instill a system rather than tailor one to our offense's strengths than is he really that much better than Cam (not questioning his credentials just the methodology). Whoever we bring in as the next OC has to tailor the gameplan and offense to the strengths of the offense. Instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, he has to be willing to cut our a square hole.

Just don't know if we have the offensive line to allow routes to develop down the field. Its the same issue that San Diego currently has. Our pieces could fit other offenses just as well. The Coryell hasn't been working in our advantage, perhaps its time to try something else.

Again this is find the personnel to fit the system vs make a system that fits the personnel we already have. That and like Purock said the system really needs the line to be exceptional blockers. Last year with Grubbs the line was ranked 12th in the league and our offense still had those inconsistencies. This year we are ranked 22nd in terms of o line. I dont think it is that effective of a system and if Norv is going to just repeat the chargers problems here are we really any more improved?Bringing Norv in makes sense because the offense HAS been tailored to the Air Coryell over the last 5 years under Cam. When the system works, it works and works well, but look what it took for SD to make it work well
2. 6 ft 5 receivers
1. LT
1. Antonio Gates in his prime
5. O line men that can block very well and for extended periods.
What do we have in comparison
1. Ray Rice
1. O line man that we can trust to block for an extended period of time (Yanda).
and reasonably thats about it. Thats not knocking T-Smith or Boldin but they arent the combination of speed and size that Vjax and Floyd are. Pitta is no antonio gates but is pretty good. To really make this system as effective as Norv did in SD its gonna take that kind of personnel and right now we don't have it.
Its why I question whether it is worth it to continue drafting o line men early. We have a lot of depth at a lot of positions and I refuse to believe Ozzie busted on so many picks. I have a feeling that a lot of the inconsistencies in the offensive blocking are due to the system that forces them to block for extended periods.

Back to Cam though I like the Air Coryell system and it works very well. The problem is Cam only understands the "throw deep" concept which is supposed to open up the middle of the field and short throw but he doesn't utilize it.
If the deep ball works not only is the middle of the field open but the run game also works well too. Norv Turner has worked with solid qb's and running back like LT and Ricky Williams and successfully got the most out of them while running Air Coryell.
Imagine how good our offense would be with a coach who knows how to balance run and pass.

Yahoo reports that Norv Turner is going to accept the OC position in Cleveland.
Hmmm...Weeden and the Air Coryell.
Should be interesting to watch. By interesting I mean hysterical.

I havent heard anything official yet, just that there is a possibility of that happening. Not saying it won't happen, but why would Norv want to go to Cleveland?

They don't have a QB obviously, but they have a lot of nice pieces for his system. You have the best LT in the game with Thomas (which you need for the Fail Coryell to have any chance of working) and Richardson might be able to be the Tomlinson role and get that consistent yardage. If they ever find a QB and weren't the Browns, they might be dangerous.

No big loss for you guys. I don't think Norv is as good as he's made out to be as an OC. Caldwell has done some great things for you guys; stick with him.
You may be right. I think we were so much interested in Norv, because we so wanted to get rid of Cam. Since Caldwell and Joe seem to get along pretty good , and the offense is showing noticeable gains, maybe this is for the best.
