Ed Reed NOT suspended, fined instead

187 posts in this topic

so if we appeal the suspension there is a chance it will upheld and reed would miss the steelers game instead of the chargers. which game would you rather have reed play in?

I read that a decision would be made by wednesday.

It's rather ridiculous, the penalty, the fine, the suspension, etc. I am more upset with the legislation than the enforcement. The competition committee needs to seriously make these rules very specific. Too much freedom of interpretation.

With that said, I hope Reed wins his appeal. It would be nice to have #20 on the field.

[/quote]it would be nice, but winning an appeal almost never happens. usually players only appeal so they can postpone the suspension

Its not an issue of postponement. The appeal will be answered in 48 hrs.

I'm a Steelers fan and I browse here from time to time but rarely post. That said, I felt compelled to write that I agree with you guys 100%. I stand firmly behind Ed Reed on this. He is a hell of a football player and plays the game like it's supposed to be played. If I could find a "Free Ed Reed" shirt I'd wear it. Well, maybe not if it were purple. :)

This is obviously a topic that is discussed quite a bit among Steelers fans. Defenders are constantly being punished for helmet to helmet hits even if a QB or receiver lowers his head at the last second, making it very difficult to avoid. I'm all for punishing defenders for blatant stuff, like foot stomping and the like, but to fine or suspend a guy for a football hit between the whistles, I believe there should have to be clear intent behind it.

For those of you talking about Clark, don't worry. It's only a matter of time before he is suspended. People talk about form tackling and all that, but one of the problems for defenders like Clark and Reed is that dislodging the ball is far better than tackling the receiver after he secures it. In the end zone, form tackling is obviously pointless. Any time you try to dislodge the ball with a hit, even leading with your shoulder, there's a chance that helmets will touch.

Free Ed Reed!

Well, thank you for your support. Maybe we Steelers & Ravens fans can unite to overcome this sissy suppression of the game we love to watch.

Btw, perhaps what we should teach our WRs is to lower their head to draw the helmet to helmet penalty. I mean, let's be honest: I've seen QBs throw at WRs clearly being held or having pass interference from the DBs. Perhaps we should learn to draw the flag and adapt.

That is exactly what I think. It's incidental contact. And the worst part to me is, Sanders caught the ball and made a move to get up field. It's not like he didn't make the catch. It's not like Reed delivered a late hit on a defenseless player.

Ray Lewis and Ed Reed transcend the media bias against the Ravens because they're living legends... I still can't believe the NFL is partly basing this suspension on a bogus hit from 2010. I bet if you look at every hit for every player since 2010 there would be a lot more suspensions! This is completely unjust!

It was the right call on the field to throw the flag, helmet to helmet on a "defenseless receiver" should be flagged everytime. However, there was zero malicious behavior or launching on Ed's part though, all helmet to helmet contact was completely incidental. Just too ridiculous, I can't believe it. Had Ed displayed any desire to actually hurt Sanders, I would be completely on board with the suspension, but I guarantee you if you showed passerbys on the street the play and asked if it was a dirty play, 99 out of 100 would say "that looks like a standard football stop to me."

Maybe the defenders across the league should just start taking everyone's legs out and blowing out every skill players' knee, then the NFL will realize that incidental helmet to helmet is going to happen due to the simple nature and speed of the game and there is not a darn thing they can do to completely prevent it without further neutering the game.

Absolutely disgusts me. If I didn't spend so much time and effort following this organization I would stop watching NFL over this. They need to take a LONG look at the direction of this league and make a choice on it.

I'm all for player safety, but the powers that be need to do a better job at recognizing players that are actually out there head- hunting and simple incidental contact. This suspension is a complete joke.

Ed Reed has not been playing all that great in my opinion. Whether its his shoulder affecting his tackling or mis-reading plays and being out of posistion (left Graham high and dry on one play last night). A week to rest that shoulder is nice but it also gives us Raven fans a chance to see what this team will look like without him and Ray....I'm intrigued.

Reed deserves it. He doesn't know how to tackle and instead launches himself at people.

You all will defend him, but he has been a detriment rather than an asset to us as of late. If he is so injured that he can't even tackle correctly, then he shouldn't be playing.

There's a lot of dirty players on the Ravens, but Reed isn't one of them.

I'll agree with the latter, but the former? Please. Name the bunch.

Have they ever stomped, kicked or spat on a player? Or any other "dirty" actions?
