Some Comments on Players by Teammates.

24 posts in this topic

Title may be weird, but I didn't know how else to say it. A friend of mine was at a charity event with a bunch of the guys. Questions arose on what they thought of their teammates and their future prospects. Here's what I got. Take it for what it's worth. I just thought it was interesting to hear some thoughts about some of their own teammates, both positive and negative.

Tommy Streeter (from Anquan Boldin) - Anquan said Streeter was beating everyone, including Webb, during camp. He said that in 2 or 3 years, Streeter will be a household name. Give him time to work out the kinks.

Tandon Doss (from Anquan Boldin) - Boldin says all of the hype around Doss is 100% warranted. Everything that is advertised is certainly true. He said, "When I'm gone, no one will even know it with Doss around."

Jimmy Smith (from Lardarius Webb) - Webb said Jimmy is getting beat by guys who aren't even in the NFL during practice. However, he says if Jimmy can put things together, he'll shutdown the field. Part of his issue is playing 10 yards off the receiver, which does not fit his skill set.

Asa Jackson (from Ed Reed) - Ed Reed told Harbaugh he'd be "loony" to cut Asa. He says that Asa is going to be a fantastic player in a few years. He also said that Jackson had been working with him at FS in the event of future needs.

Terrence Cody (from Haloti Ngata) - Ngata says that Cody came in overweight, and he'll even admit it. Either way, Ngata didn't seem too pleased with Cody's play. He didn't go too in depth, seemed kind of irritated.

Kelechi Osemele (from Haloti Ngata) - Ngata says Osemele is going to be a true mauler. Rookie mistakes are there, but in time, he'll learn. He compared him to Yanda, which is always a good sign.

Torrey Smith (from Lardarius Webb) - Who's going to lead the team when Ray leaves? Webb says Torrey, because he shows tremendous heart. In addition to his heart, he's a gifted speaker and a fantastic motivator.

Deonte Thompson (from Ed Reed) - That's dude is fast. Mental mistakes are holding him back now, and his hands are still kind of rough. You can't get rid of speed like that.

I agree with Streeter and Doss, he has the most potential out of any WR on the roster. But the only true valid one is what Ngata says. If Osemele is mauling him then we got a 11 out of 10 on the stud meter.

I mean if any body aughta know it would be the players right ?

I just thought it was interesting to hear from the guys who do see them everyday in practice. Not saying I agree or disagree necessarily, but hey, thought it might spark up some conversation on the bye week.

I really hope Anquans right about Streeter. It makes me excited just thinking of him being a key part to our offense.

I don't think many question the skill set of Deonte, or Torrey. The other player insight is good to hear though. Judged by what I've seen though, and read from articles, and posters themselves -- I really believe it's time to find a replacement for Cody.

JSmith's report from Webb certainly leaves a lot to be desired. But hell if we on the forums can see that playing 10 yards off the damn ball is no good for a 6'2 corner and Webb sees it first hand, why in god's name does Pees continue to do it?

Another thing I dislike about Harbaugh. If Streeter is torching everyone in practice when it's man coverage why in the hell is he on the "IR" mystery injury list?

All I can say is that Torrey Smith is a great player but a greater person! His play against New England said more than anything he could have ever said himself!

Streeter is still raw in a lot of aspects of his game. Getting him a year of study is actually a pretty good move.

It's a good move compared to the alternative which would have been cutting him. My point is that he is obviously raw, but if his raw skill set allows him to beat every corner on our roster, including Webb who is a top 3 cover corner in the entire AFC then how can you not roll with that raw skill set and refine it each week in practice and with 15-20 snaps on game day. Especially when we can't beat press man coverage, but we have a 6'5 WR with speed who is doing nothing because he's on IR.

He's not getting better right now because he's "hurt".

Thanks for the post. It's nice to see some kind of optimism on the board this week. This was really refreshing for the most part.

So Webb knows that Jimmy Smith should be playing press. We know he should be playing press. But hell if Harabaugh or Pees knows this. That is just a joke.

Not liking what he said about Cody. He used to be a beast in college I remember him blocking two field goals in one game. Ngata seems to understand that Cody is worthless in terms of effort.

Still don't know why Streeter went on IR. He is so raw that he needs practices to help him but we took that away. I could think of a few guys I would put him on the team over. Can he still workout with the team though? He was a twig before so if he can still workout with the team then it wasn't such a terrible idea. Him spending the season lifting and not just out at practice might be good for him.

Suggs had some problems a few years ago that affected his production and motivation but once he solved the distraction he's risen and proven to be irreplaceable. Maybe Cody has some unknown solvable issue that's causing him problems. I believe he has the talent but for some reason his motivation is below his ability.

Great post. I share the same feelings about Doss and Asa. I think Does doesn't get many reps because of the style of offense we want to run but when Boldin is gone he will shine. I think Asa will be our next Webb when we field ally start letting him see the field. Disappointing though what Ngata said about Cody. I think if we started using Smith to his ability he would shine. Its harder to get beat on a you ke move when the receivers timing is thrown off and you're right there with them.

Here's why Jimmy doesnt play press as often as we think he should. The coaches don't have complete faith in him. If you play press and get beat...it's probably bad news. That means Reed will need to be shaded over his way everytime. Not only dies that restrict what Ed can do, but it tips the defense"s hand to some degree. It's not too late for him though.

but if he's playing 10 yards off the LOS and giving up easy first down, then getting torched on the double move, how much confidence can you have in him playing 10 yards off the ball?

I'd rather die with a guy playing to "his" best ability rather then something that suites the coach. I have my own theory on why Jimmy is struggle which i have no problem sharing but don't wanna high jack he thread.

Jimmy is a press corner, as is Cary, but both guys seem way to unsure about themselves in coverage. I'm not a blame the coach kinda guy, but our secondary seemed much more comfortable playing in the aggressive defense of Pagano.

You need pass rush with a press defense. Once the receivers beat the press they tend to be able to get pretty open. Jimmy isn't the fastest player and with the dismal pass rush he could probably play press but would get beat before the pass rush got there.

Actually, Jimmy ran a 4.42 at the combine. That doesn't indicate his game speed as well, but he still has some speed. He also ran a 4.02 shuttle, which is pretty damn quick.

I wouldn't be surprised if Asa Jackson becomes the player Jimmy Smith is supposed to.
He has some Finnegan competitiveness to him and I like it. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jackson is the nickel next year and we let Williams walk.

That really depends on the type of corner. If you have a guy like Webb pressing then yes, the pass rush needs to get there fast because Webb isn't that adept at jamming. But a guy like JSmith who is a very big corner with long arms and played nothing but press throughout college is a different story. JSmith can press and re-route receivers and throw off timing. Even if it's a zone defense allowing the corners to re-route a WR helps tremendously.
