Panthers Fire G.M Marty Hurney

9 posts in this topic

The firing season is under way and it's not a coach. The Carolina Panthers have fired General Manager Marty Hurney.
“This was an extremely difficult decision,” Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement. “Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization.”
I always get a little sad when a moronic GM is fired, it means someone a little more capable is going to go in there and make solid personnel decisions.

Never been a fan of the way the Panthers ran their organization. The fact they paid both running backs huge contracts then moved to a more passing style attack (with Cam's ground game) is extremely confusing. They also constantly neglect their lines.

Which is exactly why I would make a better GM than Hurney already, If I was a GM I would focus on the offensive line and defensive line first which has been their two weakest parts of the team. You also have to wonder if this new GM will decide to let Cam Newton go via trade or release since they aren't as committed to him under the rookie wage scale.

From what I was reading, Jerry Richardson wanted Cam Newton, and not Hurney. I bet that sounds familiar to Titans fans, remember Bud Adams wanted VY and Jeff Fisher didn't want him? How did that turn out, oh yeah we all know how that turned out.

Hurney deserved to get fired. He used up all the Panthers cap-space on RBs and LBs, probably the two easiest positions to get good production on the cheap. They have drafted some solid players, but it's been an mis-managed team for some time now. I should know, I have fixed them 2 straight years in our Forum Mock. I don't think I want to touch them next time around though lol.

I was surprised that it took Jerry Richardson this long to fire him, I have to wonder why he wasn't let go when they fired John Fox. Though I guess, better late than never.
