Following a safety, the offensive team punts, which usually results in great field position because those punts don't travel as far as a normal kickoff from a tee.

To add to the information we're dispensing, it's called a "free kick". The other team is not allowed to rush the kicker.

After a safety, a team can punt, drop kick or place kick without a tee.
