Time of Possession Analysis

20 posts in this topic

I realize it's an overrated stat that doesn't mean a ton, but I was just doing some research instead of work I'm supposed to be doing to see how we've fared in Time of Possession so far this season:

Bengals 32, Ravens 28 (44-13 W)
Eagles 34, Ravens 26 (23-24 L)
Patriots 31, Ravens 28 (31-30 W)
Ravens 33, Browns 27 (23-16 W)
Chiefs 34, Ravens 26 (9-3 W)
Cowboys 40, Ravens 20 (31-29 W)

We're averaging about 27 minutes in the TOP, looking back I couldn't find a year where we averaged below 30 minutes until 2002:

2011: 31 minutes
2010: 31 minutes
2009: 30 minutes
2008: 33 minutes
2007: 31 minutes
2006: 33 minutes
2005: 31 minutes
2004: 30 minutes
2003: 31 minutes

Not a huge difference, and I know that looking back this far loses some of it's relevance but it is an encouraging thing is that we're winning games despite having the ball less often. I know our defense hasn't done much to be proud of, but hey, we're doing something right, and the offense is scoring pretty quickly. It is interesting that as we make a shift to a more offense-heavy team we're seeing less time of possession, though that could be attributed to our defense not getting off the field as quickly. Just thought this was interesting.

Interesting stuff, nice work compiling all of it. Obviously our piss poor run defense has a lot to do with it the last two weeks, but as you mentioned, at least our offense has shown the ability to get quick scores this year. If it was that easy to just grind the clock down on any team every week, we'd see all 32 teams running a "ground and pound" rushing attack complimented by quick West Coast offense like throws.

Good work, crazy to see that we've lost TOP in all but one game

Actually, all, right?

Damn day drinking!! I quickly scanned and assumed (I know) that Ravens were down the entire right side. My bad...

Yes, that's correct.

What is most surprising here is the Bengals blowout win. They had the ball for 4 minutes more
but got smoked . Keep it coming Joe.

Running the no-huddle would cut down on TOP, and understandably so. Cam gets too streaky in his play calling as well, which doesn't help. When there's a string of incompletions and he refuses to mix in the run, you're not going to have the ball very often.

There's a bigger disparity between teams running against us than us "abandoning the run". Teams have run against us more than any other team in the NFL and it's about 10 more rushes/game than last season.

Also, we've run less plays in total, on average, than last year (we were towards the tops in 2011, below average in 2012) it's ~3 plays per game. Not much, maybe, but our offense is also moving faster and being more productive with those snaps.

I don't know who breathed life into this, but let me also say that in 2012 we had a very explosive offense.  It only took a few plays sometimes for this team to score last year.  It wouldn't surprise me if TOP was better in 2013, the difference was points.  Also, in 12 the run defense seemed almost as bad as our... hmmm... entire offense did in 13.  That could've padded teams TOP in 2012.  I think they also started using a more uptempo offense as well.

Right on man !!!!!!!!!

*leaves room with out turning his back...*

Just saw who dug this up.  I'll watch your back, you watch mine...

Well, we typically averaged 30-32 minutes in previous seasons. The past few years, we were able to gut out those close wins.

This year, we weren't able to gut out close wins. We averaged 27 minutes, as OP said. How many games did we lose by less than seven points? Those three minutes could make a world of a difference in our season.

Win TOP, you win games, more times than not.

Woops, just noticed this is a way old thread. My point still stands, lol. We sucked at TOP this year and that hurt our performance.

No, this thread got spamed. For what ever stupid reason I was responding to the spammer.
This thread is from 2012 and is irrelevant in every possible way.

That's not true. The season average was almost even. Anyway, this old thread is obviously confusing so it needs to die and stay dead.
