Merged: Week 6 Defense Performance Review

38 posts in this topic

40 minutes and 3 seconds

That's how long Dallas had the ball. Our offense didn't even have the ball for 20 minutes, but still managed to score 24 points. Absolutely stunning statistics.

Against better teams (like the team we face next week), that won't cut it.

We all know what went wrong in this game, I'm glad the offense and the one kick return could bail us out

Watching the game i made the comment, of it's funny how the rolls have changed. It used to be the offense not staying on the field long enough and that made the defense tired, or atleast that was the often used excuse.

Now it seems the defense just can't get off the field, and it's limiting the rhythm of the offense. I think a lot of credit has to be given to the offense, players and coaches, for being able to perform, despite not being on the field alot.

To you're point about better teams. The Cowboys had the top ranked pass defense I beleive, and minus all the Romo turnovers, they're offense is pretty good as well. So even though our play isn't at all great, it's good enough to beat the better teams in the NFL. Next test Hou, if we win that game ugly who cares.
Yeah, I think I saw at the beginning of the broadcast that Dallas had the 4th ranked passing offense. I could be wrong though.

There are still hints of that.. Eagles Browns and Chiefs game. Our offense is still flawed and inconsistent but in this game even though they did have some frustrating 3 and outs.. they made crucial drives which they are going to have do on a consistent basis or these kind of games will start to catch up to us.

Yea not excuses for the defense, but that's a talented bunch with the Cowboys. Garret is a really good "offensive minded" coach and with a extra week to prepare I fully expected the Cowboys to come out and have some success. I just didn't think it'd be that much success.

Maybe we'll turn out to be this year's version of the Giants. Our defense will suck all season, then we get into the playoffs and they turn it on. But when we face Houston, San Diego, Denver, the Giants, etc. our offense is going to have to come to play, because I think it's pretty obvious this year's Raven's defense isn't where we all expected it to be.

I was thinking that as well, like the Packers or Pats.

To add to the point in the OP, the Ravens had only 2, count them TWO offensive possessions in the 2nd half.
That doesn't sound right. I know they had at least two 3 & outs before they scored in the 4th quarter.
I'm getting this info from someone on Twitter. Sounded odd to me as well, I'll have to rewatch the game to verify.

Three, I think.

The kickoff return adds to the lopsided TOP but the defense was getting demolished all day.

But the same can now be said for the offense, that used to be said for the defense....The defense stays on the field so long, it's hard for the offense to get in a rhythm. Again I won't make any excuses for the offense, no more then i will for the defense, however, those guys on the other side of the ball get paid too, and in the case of today's game. Our first 2 possessions of the 2nd half came inside of the yardline and they came after long cowboy drives.

You're asking the offense to get jump started down inside their own 10, after being on the sideline for so long. Not good

Yeah. It's sort of shocking how the age of the Ravens defence being credible has ended. Now, instead of the D saying 'if you give us 13, we'll get you the game', now it's like 'if you give us 31, there's a fair chance we won't blow it'.

Suggs might help when he gets back.

Going to be a tough year forward. When opposing teams look at the film and realize, they can keep our best unit on the bench by just running ball and control the clock.

Three is correct. With 8:16 left in the second half we took the field for only the third time, and it was the first time outside the 10. We scored on that possession. We only ran 49 plays the whole game. Dallas ran 79. Can you say lopsided?

would be interested to see what our defensive 3rd percentage was.

Oh I agree. Today I think the offense performed very well given the circumstances. The defense was flat out the problem. The defense not getting off the field was not the problem for the offense in those 3 games I mentioned though. In fact they kept putting a vulnerable defense right back on the field in them. They have to be the consistent unit this year like the defense has been every year in the past because unlike the past our defense in no way can help them out when they have their typical struggle games.

Yeah, the bad field position was key. When they're at the 7, they're running such a conservative offence that it's a lot easier to shut down. There was only one drive where they started on the 10 or better where they didn't score.

Dallas was 8/15 on 3rd downs and 2/2 on 4th.

This team needs to go back to basics regarding tackling. Some of the attempts I saw today were down right embarrassing for a high school team let alone a NFL team. Fix this now!!

Ed Reed is definitely not the Safety he use to be. He is terrible! Cannottackle....he thinks he can push the guy out of bounds or do a body block and misses,,,,or does not know that he should wrap his arms around the guy's legs and not shoulders. OMG, he makes me sick with all of his BS. Cary Williams has got to go, he is always behind his man or no where near. Again, he does not know how to tackle. He says in the interview today that HE CAUSED the receiver to miss that ball for the extra point . NO way, no how. wait till he sees the replay. He stinks!
Pees is a lousy coach and Harbaugh has got to get tough on his players! Way too many mistakes and Flacco has got to run sometimes!

So basically, everyone should be fired, even though we are 5-1.

Makes logical sense to me. Let's completely start over. This team was a dropped pass away from the Superbowl, is 5-1 now, but we aren't playing unstoppable so it's time to fire everyone.

Gotcha.

Dallas was 8/15 on 3rd downs and 2/2 on 4th.
Good lord, 10/17 on third and fourth downs... That's 59% allowed! And that's to the Cowboys, who were the worst third down team in the NFL entering this game.
