Seeing how Suggs AND Scott may not remain here, who of those two do you think would step it up and fill that void?

I don't think Ozzie will let Bart AND Suggs walk.

Ed Reed maybe?

hummmmm....well we always have Bart Scott who as most of us know he is not afraid to speak his mind *COUGH* HINES WARD and pump up the team. I think we might have to have Flacco step up and be a

leader just like how Drew Brees is in New Orleans. I am not quite sure, but I am sure that leadership will not be an issue with this team.

I dont see anyway that the Oz lets Bart walk....maybe Suggs just because of salary cap issues, when I answered I thought of who will lead the team in the future and Ed Reed is also becoming old

in football terms so I dont really think he is a good choice.

How much longer does Reed have? I'm not doubting that, but it be nice to have someone younger that can continue to be a leader for years to come after Ray goes.

Well recently I've seen Suggs take some of the leadership role for our defensive so I could see him being the guy to step up after Ray retires (though I don't think there will ever be one guy to replace the fire that Ray brings to our team).

Another guy I could see growing into a leadership role is Haloti Ngata, he's been impressing a lot of people and while he might not be the in-your-face-type guy I could see him growing to bb a leader on the field as he becomes the ;) grizzled vet on the defense.

Ray's huge personality I think may dwarf some of the other potential leaders on the team. Ed and Haloti are very soft spoken, so I can't see them leading "Dogs in da house" before the game. Suggs seems like the best suited to fill the role.

Yea, and what he did after the game at the press conference shows he has no problem speaking up, etc. Overall his personality shows me he is capable of doing it.

He's that way off the field but in the game he can get really fired up, I'm pretty sure he won't be one of the big vocal leaders of the team, but I could definitely see him being the silent "lead by example" type of player than can go a long way to leading his team with just his play and his demeanor.

I don't think taht we should ask ourselves this question right after we heard that Ray could sign a 5year extension the next days or weeks.

But if so, it would be Ed - he has the same mentality than Ray.

But remember, Ed is already 30! It might happen that he and Ray retire at the same time.

Then it would be Bart... if he is re-signed! T-Sizzle is not a leader. I have never seen him firing up his teammates.

I'd say the next defensive leader isn't currently on the Ravens. I don't see them letting Ray get away for at least 3-5 years.

That seems like a lifetime to me in terms of football rosters. The heir apparent will be drafted or come from free agency.

If Suggs stays I'd like to think it would be him. Honestly though I've never seen any football player play with the passion that Ray doe's... Players like him are truly the best of the best and only so many come along thru each era in football.

After Ray leaves, it will be Ray Lewis. We are going to hire him as a linebacker's coach, he'll still get everybody pumped up.

I can't see the Ravens letting this guy retire and ride away into the sunset. Maybe he'll take a couple years off, but we should most def reel this guy in. His mentality and passion for the game, would always be a great asset to have, even if it starts off as linebackers coach.

Considering Ray 'might' be here for another 5 years...it will probably be someone we have yet to know.

For the Defense, I don't think the player is in the line up YET. Suggs is too thugged out and just not well spoken.
For the offense, i think Leron McClain and Mason are the two I would consider LEADERS.

Agreed, but don't underestimate Ed Reed's leadership on and off the field. If I am not mistaken it is Reed who was given the Coach-to-Defense helmet as well

I think he has it, but it has more to do with the fact that Reed is in more plays and wouldn't subject the helmet to as much of a pounding as Ray would  because right now I'd say that they are leader on the team, Ray is more of the overall leader for the entire team, but the front 7 especially while Reed leads the secondary completely calling coverage audible and such.

No One
Players of his caliber come around like once in a generation!! Most of the other teams in the league have No One even close to Ray. To think that someone else is going to take over that role shows a total lack of understanding for what Ray really does for this team, and how unique a player he really is! We are truly blessed & spoiled by having him play here since the beginning and won't truly appreciate his contribution until he is gone, but make no mistake about it,

obviously we can't replace Ray, we are just wondering who the next leader would be once his playing days are over. Unless we freeze him in a cryogenic lab, he is not going to play forever :(

You just proved my point!

Who is the Defensive Leader for the Steelers, Giants, Redskins, Eagles, Bucs, Titans, Panthers, Cowboys, or Bills! I just named the other Defenses in the Top 10 in the NFL! I couldn't tell you the Defensive Leader for any of those teams, or if there even is one! If you ask anyone who knows anything about football, anywhere in the country, who the Leader of the Raven's Defense is, they would not hesitate and say Ray Lewis!!

I just think you are trying to name a successor to a position that will never be filled again! Sure, someone will have to call the signals, I just don't think anyone will be the "Leader" of this defense ever again! It will be a shared role by whoever the Vets happen to be at the time.

You seem to forget, Ray has been the Leader of this Defense since about his second or third year in the league, despite being one of the youngest players on it! What he did was pretty much unprecedented!
