Merged: If Rex Ryan Was Fired...

145 posts in this topic

I'll pass. I like Rex and think that he's a great DC, but I'd rather stick it out with Pees. When our defense finally progresses and gets pressure with four men, Pees' scheme will be lethal.

[sub]i wouldnt be against it but i think we should stick my Pees and see how we do for the season we are still trying to find ourselves with new a D coordinator and without suggs its a process. I think Rex wouldnt be as vocal since he would be a D coordinator and harbaugh would still preside as the HEAD coach and maintaining that discplined style we know now.[/sub]

Rex is a great DC and I wouldn't mind him being in Baltimore. His style of defense fits our style of play.

However I think Rex's leadership ability and structure is very juvenile and does not fit the structure we have in Baltimore now.

If Rex could shut the hell up, seperate business from personal, and follow Harbaughs philosophy, I'd be happy to have Organized Chaos back in Baltimore.

The only other bad thing I can think of is that his schemes get torched sometimes by Elite QBs when they are on their A game.
I agree 100%. I don't think Rex's ability as a coordinator is any more diminished now than it was in '08. But I just couldn't see him fitting too well with how he is personality wise or at least how he has come across the last 3 years in New York.

Don't really need to restate the title, but here it is anyway:

The Jets are looking absolutely terrible this year. They could very possibly get rid of their GM at the end of the season if their crapfest continues. If they get a new GM, he will very likely want full control over his coaching staff, meaning Rex could possibly be let go.

If this happened, how would you all feel about bringing him back to the Ravens?
It would be nice if you at least gave us your reasoning for even bringing this up. Is it because you think the defense is holding the team back?

Either way, the Ravens defense was great before Rex got to Baltimore and it's still great after he's gone. The only problem is lack of talent at the linebacker position. It's why they get beat in the short/intermediate passing game... and it's why they can't get pressure on opposing QBs.

And honestly... maybe Rex is good at masking weaknesses. But it doesn't seem to be the case for the Jets. Sure, Sanchez is horrible and they can't run the ball... but that defense is getting beat repeatedly... even when Revis was healthy.

I just don't see what bringing Rex Ryan back to Baltimore would do except create headlines. And this is coming from someone who preferred promoting Ryan to HC instead of bringing in some special teams guy in Harbaugh.

That's exactly why you wouldn't want to bring him him. Rex isn't going to stop doing what he's always been doing (talking). If anything the danger of him undermining Harbaugh is greater. Especially since Harbs got the Ravens gig and Rex didn't. Rex will do more harm to the discipline than good. Its best to leave this whole situation alone.

Rex's pride won't let him come back to Baltimore.

You know 100% IF (huge IF) he was given the chance, he's be back here in a second. In. A. Second. With his boisterous and obnoxious ways, plus now a horrible team, he wont be given another HC chance in a while. Just my opinion, at least...

Does anyone truly believe Ozzie let alone Biscotti would even fall for this?
He burnt his bridges when he left and spoke poorly of our current management.

I cannot see us as a team forgetting that and allowing him back more obnoxious and annoying than ever.

I was just perusing the Jets forum and thought about it. I don't particularly see any reason to bring him back, was just interested in what other Ravens fans would think about the situation.

But it is true that our defense has not looked as good as it has in past years. If the trend continues then we may be looking for a new DC at some point in the near-ish future. If we wanted a new DC, and Rex Ryan was available, would there be any support in bringing him back.

Not creating this thread calling for Pees' head. Hope I didn't give that impression.

Honestly, I don't know what he will do besides run his mouth. He isn't going to fix the problem. He's had a ton of talent with that D in NY. But here its a matter of personnel. We need our young guys to progress and we need to get Suggs healthy.

I think Rex will do more harm to our winning culture than help it. I do like the thought of bringing Nolan back however, but let's stick it out with Pees. He'll be fine.
I'm still pissed we didn't make a run at Nolan a couple years back when he was fired as the HC in SF and Rex had left for the Jets. Boggles my mind, Nolan is an outstanding DC.

He was never like that when he was here. Hes the head coach of the NEW YORK jets. If he were to be dcoord again for the ravens you would never see him ob espn again
It wasn't talked about as much but he was probably the same guy. I think our defensive penalties have fallen since he was here - we definitely haven't seen incidents like against the Lions in '05 or the Patriots in '07. As more time goes on, I'm beginning to think that the division in our team pre-Harbs was exacerbated by Rex Ryan. Additionally, the dumb comments on 'hot sauce' and 'bounties' happened when he was here, too.

He just won 3 consecutive Superbowls. No way he gets fired.

To those upset we didn't get Nolan years back, I am with you. I still can't believe we let him go. I really wanted him to come here. He would've been better than Mattison.

I don't understand why Nolan couldn't hold down a job. Everywhere he's gone as a dc he has had them plays g at a high level but seems to bounce around a lot.

Usually because the team sucks so bad that they clean house. Then there was a 'mutual' agreement between Nolan and McDaniels that Nolan would leave as DC. Sounds like McDaniels had some daddy issues.

But he had Denver as a top 10 defense in 2009. He had a top 10 defense in Miami in 2010. Atlanta isn't known for their defense, but they are playing pretty well so far.

Guy gets in bad situations. Looks like he finally latched onto a good one in Atlanta.

Rex Ryan, like all of the Ryans, is a great defensive coach. However, Rex Ryan, like all of the Ryans, is a headcase. He has no sense of authority, no peoples skills, cannot grasp how to lead mean and most importantly has no idea how to build up an offense. The FO made the right choice with Harbaugh and as much as I would like to see him back as the DC (I too wondered out loud, if he could come back and join our choaching staff), I am afraid he would hurt our locker room. I rather give Pees a chance.

Too much of an ego, wouldn't fit in here anymore. He isn't a horrible coach but the Jets are a mess, they don't have the personnel to accomplish anything. Especially with Revis and Holmes out.

Say the defense finishes around 20th in yards top 10 scoring and turnovers. If Rex was fired how would you feel about brining him back? I wouldn't mind and feel he's a great coordinator. I even think he's not that bad a hc but if you look at the Jets his personnel has gotten worse every year he's been there. Before you think I'm knocking Pees I do think the defense starts to click with more time in the system and him learning where is best to put the players.
Heck yea, just make sure he does't talk as much as he does to the media. I have no other issues with REX

It is weird how things worked out, and I mean nothing by this, but Pees would have probably taken over if Pagano was still here, at least Pees is already in place. I really hope Chuck makes a full recovery. May God bless him.

I was thinking the same thing. If Pagano stayed, he would have gone to John's Hopkins. He would have gotten possibly better treatment (good hospital) or at the very least had access to some of the best oncologists in the country (I'm sure with his money he can get them to fly to him, anyway). Regardless, it would've been great to have him still be here. I do miss him. But I will say in some ways Pees is better than Pagano. I just liked the way Pagano used the secondary and the pass rush better, but I think to a certain extent he had a lot to work with, too. We had a lot of quality players when he was here.

I would take Mike Nolan over Rex - but he's poised for another HC run. Or Clarence Brooks from within.

I like your play on words in the end there. :D

Anyway, comparing Ryan to our DC now is like comparing Pees and carrots.

i doubt! Rex was pissed when he didn't get the HC job for the Ravens and going to New York to run the Jets and then stealing Ravens players left and right was his way of "trying" to stick it to the Ravens for passing on him. he went back to back AFC Championship games as the H.C. of the Jets...another way of sticking it to the Ravens. however, recently his antics, leadership style and personality has finally cause the national meltdown of the Jets. lol! imo, IF given the opportunity.....his pride wouldn't let him come back to baltimore. i could be wrong though. only time will tell!

Lol. Rex Ryan is literally the antithesis of a Harbaugh guy. Rex helped create the culture Harbaugh has slaved to reshape. If Harbaugh has any say whatsoever there is a 0% chance Rex is DC next year.

That said, I think both Rex and Pees have plenty of legitimate scapegoats to buy themselves another year. Now, say the Jets continue to blow next year after their GM is fired and our defense continues to blow with Suggs, then I think we fire Pees and Harbs finds himself on the hotseat. In that scenario I could see us bringing Rex back after he's canned both to galvanize the defense and to light a fire under Harbs.

I think that situation is unlikely though.

Harbs won't be on the hotseat until we don't make the playoffs for a couple years.
