Torrey Smith's improvement

55 posts in this topic

and to think one of his biggest knock coming out of college was that he had small hands...haha hasn't seemed to slow him down. But even watching an interview of him you can see what a great person he is, he lights up the room. What excites me the most is this sudden surge of chemistry between him and joe. we really only saw that on deep balls last year. Now he's running screens, slants, and has really become an all around receiver for us. cant wait to see him develop this year!

I think one of the main reasons for his success is he worked a lot with Joe during the off-season. That chemistry is so important. And like some of you have said, Boldin has really helped our younger guys. I know his contract is up soon, but I hope we bring him back for a little longer because I think he could only help our younger guys more. But I'm extremely pleased with how much Torrey has improved. Like people have stated, he's now running a lot of different routes.

Torrey Smith's improved route running and his hands have been very impressive so far this season... I've seen him run some really good routes. It's nice to see him working hard to constantly improve as a WR and not settle for just being a speed WR.

Even Jacoby Jones has shown improved hands this season.

At the same time, what the heck Jimmy Smtih?!
Jimmy does not have Torrey's work ethic, honestly. People forget that Torrey really was a DHB clone early at Maryland. Track guy converted to FB. The difference is Torrey is an amazingly committed human being. Friedgen even said when he came out that "God created a perfect person" in T. Smith. J. Smith is a guy with all the tool but I think it'll be another year before he we really see him making plays against the elites of the league.

He wasn't a track guy. He was recruited as a QB and switched to WRs. Torrey was scouted to play football though.

Really? Interesting, I could swear when I was there he was a trackstar but various college activities have altered my memory of those years... and others have been lost completely lol.

He's only going to get better, which is the exciting part. Joe and Matt Ryan will forever be compared, and so will Torrey and Julio Jones. I just think thats something cool, because of right now we're winning.

Torreys had a very impressive career so far. His first 3 catches were all touchdowns vs the Rams. "The catch" @ Pittsburgh. Playing less than 24 hours after his brother died, and put up 2 touchdowns.

This dude is special.

That is the key whoever mentioned Smith's work ethic. That is why he has done so well compared to Doss, Streeter, Reed, and yes Jimmy Smith. I like Streeter's work ethic, too. I think he will be something special for us next year.

Not to digress too much, but I agree 100% about Jimmy Smith's work ethic. I know he will get it together but I see big things from him. His ceiling is high but his work ethic needs to improve.

Torrey's body control in making both his TDs in the Pats game and especially the 1st were remarkable. They were Fitzgerald like catches. You see alot of WRs try to make those diving grabs and rarely come up with them because they dont have the body control to jump or dive at the right moment or way. It helps to have a cannon arm QB to take advantage of him. I never realized how important arm strength was to an offense until last year and this year.

Not only is he much better with his hands, but if he isn't running DEEP down the field, he always has his eye on the line and adjusts his routes accordingly. He's often open for short passes, which must really aggrivate the defense becasue he can be anywhere on the field at any time.

Proving to be a very smart player who thinks on his feet, and is not just a deep threat.

I've always believed in Torrey and his ability... his hands are like glue. I don't think he's had a drop yet this season.

BIG things to come for #82.

you know a funny thing I was looking up the other day.
Julio jones: 15rec/3td/189yards
Torrey Smith:16rec/3td/332yards
I couldn't find drop stats, but anyone who watched that game against Denver would tell you Julio dropped like 2 or 3 passes; one of which would've been a TD.

Roddy White did too! Glad we have our WR for the future.
LoL what are you talking about. Torrey was recruited as a dual threat QB and DB. He switched to Wideout because of playmaking ability as a returner.

I havent been all that impressed of him this year, especially when Roddy White is doing work accross from him.

I am surprised to hear about how many people weren't excited about drafting Torrey. I was fingers crossed hoping he would fall to us and that we would take him. I even thought if Jimmy wasn't on the board when the Ravens picked that they would've got Torrey.

I mean if you don't think (by now) that Torrey was basically destined to be here then you must have some serious blinders on. He is a great kid, that was plainly obvious in all the pre-draft chatter, and a lot of mock drafts had us pegging him in the first round. He said he wanted to be here all along, and to me that is always a win both ways every time. Again, I think Torrey is the perfect fit here in Baltimore where he belongs.

Flacco is better than Ryan, but Julio might be top 3 by the end of the season. Torrey will be top ten. But I have both in Madden so who cares (cost me Dickson and Doss too.

I think the emerge of torrey has a lot to do with how cam uses him this year.

last year he just went deep most of the time. this year it seems that he is running the complete route tree and he is doing great at it. that is also why boldin is so important because he is a great route runner and can show those young kids how to do it.

he also seems to be very confident at this point of his career. he is still young and just had about 20 nfl games but look at how opposing defenses are playing him already. he gets doubled a lot and still gets open on a regular basis.

for me he is really our number one of the future. let him develop for another year or two behind boldin and we might have one of the best receivers in the game in baltimore. that is something that we have never had before. combined with jones you can just see how good joes arm really is. he hits those guys deep a lot and they are just getting started.

looking at our first four games and what teams we played and especially defenses i am really confident about our passing offense this year. i said it on another thread: this year will be joe breakout season. and a lot of it has to do with torrey smith and jacoby jones!!!

His improvement also speaks to the leadership on this team. I still remember when he was so down on himself early last year, but his teammates held up him. I think Joe going back to him after he dropped that first pass in Pittsburgh was huge for his confidence.

I hate agreeing with you, seeing as you're completely bipolar and all. But yes, that game was HUGE for Torrey and his confidence!

Agree. I think it also speaks to Torrey's resilience. You can't teach speed and you can't teach determination... Smith has both in excess.

The other awesome thing about Torrey is that if he continues this learning curve he'll be able to dominate in the slot for years after his speed comes down to earth.

His body control has also gotten better. Now that he can catch consistently with his hands; he can now go up and get the ball at its highest point.
