Torrey Smith's improvement

55 posts in this topic

This guy has come leaps and bounds from where he was last year. He's catching everything with his hands and is making some really difficult catches in traffic. For example the TD catch against the Browns; it was thrown behind him and he still adjusted to ball while taking a hit. Then the leaping TD grab against NE was just beautiful.

What are your thoughts on his overall improvement?

Obviously played an extra game but as it stands, he's equal first in touchdowns, 2nd in yards to megaton, but a few should over take him this week, probably drop to around 8 or 9. For what it's worth boldin is 10th. Smith is 4th in yards per reception with a mammoth 20.8 and importantly zero drops

Agree with everything you have said here with the key being zero drops. If he continues, he should have one hell of a season.
you know a funny thing I was looking up the other day.
Julio jones: 15rec/3td/189yards
Torrey Smith:16rec/3td/332yards
I couldn't find drop stats, but anyone who watched that game against Denver would tell you Julio dropped like 2 or 3 passes; one of which would've been a TD.

People were just skeptical because he wasn't worth a first round pick at the time of his draft, but I was over the moon when we got him in the second. Leonard Hankerson and doug baldwin went higher then him...
you mean Jon Baldwin, but I get you. Baldwin has been immature and while Hankerson is playing well, he will probably never equal to Torrey's production. I wanted Titus young personally, but I was happy to see Torrey slip past the rams.

I just didn't think we'd end up with Torrey. There's no reason Torrey should be on this team.

EDIT:
There's no reason torrey should have fallen so far in the draft. We hit the lottery.

There is PLENTY reason for Torrey to be on this team. He's my favorite raven.

Honestly I think Torrey's draft stock was negatively impacted by Heyward-Bey similarly to how Stephen Hill's was positively impacted by Calvin Johnson.

The great thing about him is his work ethic is unbelievable. He's going to be the best receiver he can possibly be and it'll be beautiful to watch.

Barring injury, Torrey could very well break Michael Jackson's single-season receiving yards record of 1201.

Send those stats to the NFL Network who just interviewed Roddy and Julio in which they said they are the absolute best duo in the NFL

Flacco knew that Torrey could catch that throw and Smith knew what kind of throw Joe would make.
A lot of that improvement is Joe and Torrey being more in sync.

We are also 1st in passing plays of 20+ yards, and that is per game. Someone would need to have a huge day to unseat us through 4 weeks. Torrey is making catches where he used to be overthrown (part of it might've been him getting off the line better or improved route running, some of it is chemistry).

Yes, Smith has looked fantastic. Very pleased with him as a player. I think it is safe to say he has become our #1. I love where he has taken his game. Finally a WR pick that has panned out for us.

It might be a bit early to call Torrey Smith the best WR the Ravens have ever had, but I think in a few years there won't be anyone disputing the statement. He's shown incredible improvement since coming out of college as a raw prospect, transforming into a guy who can run the whole route tree and with the speed to take the top off of a defense.
Dude he's already like 4 TDs away of breaking Claytons career totals. BTW no one is necesarilly saying he's the best reciever we've ever had; he's just the best we've ever drafted.

I screamed at my TV and was angry for over a week when we drafted Torrey in the 2nd round. I thought he was a DHB clone that could only run fast. I thought he came from a poor system, had terrible hands, and couldn't run a route. I thought he'd be a one trick pony that would never see the field. BOY WAS I WRONG.

Over the span of last season I went from being one of his biggest doubters and critics to one of his biggest fans. He has worked his tail off to learn the playbook and can now run a full route tree, and while he still body catches sometimes we can rely on him to catch the ball in crunch time. He has become a huge threat and a nightmare for defenses to game plan against.

It's amazing what a year can do. When game day rolls around now you'll surely be hearing me screaming for 82 to go deep.

I drop my jaws on how Torrey has improved from the past two years. I think Boldin has helped him tremendously from catching the balls to running routes; well, work ethic is a huge part of his success obviously.

Boldin is a big reason why our young WRs are developing well. Even a still young Jacoby Jones benefits. This is why I am in no rush to have Boldin off the team.

Having a franchise QB also helps.
