Is Webb the best corner in the league?

109 posts in this topic

Revis #1 and Webb surpassed Champ/Nnamdi. Now that Revis is done for season, YES he is the best in league this year

pollard has rushed 13 times, 1 sack, 1 hit, 1 hurry

I don't like Webb blitzing because he's then not in coverage, I'd rather pollard blitz

Him or Cary. Our best pass defenders should be you know, defending the pass

It depends. Webb is the best CB in the league at defending the run. He is also a very good blitzer. He is a turnover machine, which is one of his better attributes. He's had some fumbles and interceptions and that is a big quality. I like how when he tackles he goes to pop out the ball. He hits hard and leaves an impression. He allows very few TDs and hasn't since 2009 was it? He has allowed completions but he stops the big play. Yeah, he's one of the best in the league. I'd say Revis is better but that's it.

I think he makes the Pro Bowl this year.

I might put Johnathon Joseph as my top cover corner with Revis out for the season. The sentiment that the Texans got a poor man's Asomugha when those two were both in free agency is a little bit flawed considering that the stats would have him playing better since then. Asante Samuel is another great corner who is difficult to compare to other top guys because he plays a lot more zone, where other top guys tend to play man. But he is a turnover machine, kind of like Webb.

Through three games Tim Jennings is easily playing the best of any corner in the league, but we'll see if he can sustain it. All that said, I don't think I would trade Webb for any corner in the league just because of his versatility and the way he produces turnovers.

joseph also has the benefit of having an very good front 7 playing infront of him. Asante Samuel is overrated imo, he is either catching an int or getting burned,

Oh please. Too many people praise Nnamdi and Revis. They both got away with hokding Torrey Smith. And Nnamdi was yelling at another teammate when he got scored on by either Fitzgerald or Floyd from the Cardinals. Webb's being targeted less and less. And he's much better at open field tackles.

I think Asomugha has been exposed as a press man cover corner only while in Philadelphia. But Revis is the real deal, he does get away with holding like no other for some reason, but the dude is smooth in his hips and very strong. I do think that Revis gets away with things because of the name on the back of his jersey, but Webb isn't there yet.

Only thing Revis has on Webb is man coverage. And that's by a little. You could argue that Peterson is on his way, and that he's the most versatile CB in the league but as of now I'd give Webb the edge over that.

Webb can play press, zone, man, blitz, stop the run, return punts, plus he's a ballhawk. Since Revis is out I truly believe Webb is #1, and he'll stay there for a while.

Nothing against Webb at all, but I'd trade him for Joe Haden, Patrick Peterson or Morris Caliborne, primarily because of age.

I see what your saying BUT Webb fits our scheme better than any corner because none of them can play the slot....

I doubt any of them would be as good in the slot as Webb is, but I've seen nothing to suggest none of them can play there. Haden has ample quickness and Peterson and Claiborne aren't exactly stiff in the hips either.

Revis takes on the best players night in and night out though right? That's the one that sets Revis apart. Webb really could be the second best in the league though.

While revis is a great corner, he is also dirty as hell. He gets away with PI and holds that most players would get flagged for every time. I dont know what the deal is, but he is not that great. I would take webb over him, with his smaller salary and lack on complaing about a new contract every two years.

I think he's the most complete corner, but not the best in man coverage. He's the best blitzer and the best run defender by far out of all cornerbacks. Revis just has him beat by a bit on coverage.

what seperates him is his ability near the line of scrimmage. webb looks like polamalu out there. i think he is a great corner but thursday night was an unusually off night for him. he got beat pretty easily a lot downfield and thankfully they dropped a lot of them but still....

There are other really good corners in the league besides Revis. Revis is just so much ahead of everyone else in terms of his coverage skills.

Young Corners I really like:
L. Webb ( of course ), Joe Haden , Patrick Peterson, Brandon Flowers

Veteran Players a few years older I like:
Champ Bailey ( is still playing at high level), Johnathan Joseph, Tramon Williams, Nnamdi Asomugha ( looks worse each game, which surprises me because I watched him a lot when he was in Oakland )

Flowers is very underrated also.
But I still don't understand how Webb didn't make the Pro Bowl...

As a Tackling CB Webb reminds me of Antoine Winfield. I love how much of a sure tackler he is....

Except when he has to tackle trent richardson

That's no reason to lower his standing as a top CB in the league. Joseph has been overlooked for years as top CB while he was with the bengals and he went to Houston whom had one of the worst pass defenses the year before and help improve that. ( Wade Phillips, JJ Watt, Brooks Reid and J.Joseph all arrived at the same time to improve that defense. ).

It's not like Joseph is an average CB that looks good because of the Constant Pass Rush like the Giants DBs or the Steelers DBs.

Webb might already be the best run stuffing CB in the game, and despite his lack of size, he has not given up a TD pass since 2010. So......I disagree with this sentiment that his size is some sort of detriment.
[/quote]

Not saying it's a detriment, but I think as we saw this year against Little and last year against Britt, big receivers give him trouble. Fortunately for his stat line, Foxworth was a much easier target in the Titans game and Little's hands are made of water. And to your point about his tackling ability, yes he's great and that's why I think, as other have said, he'll probably end up being the all around defensive back--essentially a Woodson clone.

That's 1 play out of a very large sample size for Webb willingness to tackle. I can't blame Webb for thinking twice about receiving the Brandon Jacobs over Charles Woodson treatment... Or the many victims of our very own Jamal Lewis....

It pisses me off so bad....lately after he makes a pick they throw a flag. Let that man live! He's a great corner and sure tackler. We definitely got lucky with him. And he overcame the 3 and forever blown coverage play a few years ago in the playoffs. I blame Mattison more for that anyway.

Uhhh when Little burned him deep for the game-tying touchdown that he gratuitously dropped. I'm not trying to bash Webb the dude's amazing. But you need a Williams and/or Smith across from him from a size perspective so Webb can roam without getting locked into a bad match up.

He dropped it before Webb had a chance to make a play on the ball. His arm was right there if Little had brought the ball in to his body. And if I remember right, Webb's broken up several TD passes in the last few years including one last game.
