NFL Replacement Refs

Hopefully the NFL has the stones to retroactively reverse the call and award the Packers the victory that was literally stolen from them.

As bad as some of the calls have been, to be fair we must remember that expecting the replacement refs to do as good of a job as the regular professional NFL refs would be like expecting a burger flipper from McDonalds to be a master chef at a gormet restaurant. (That is not meant as an insult to the replacement refs, but just to explain that they are simply being asked to preform at a level they were not ready for)

It would have been refreshing to have had the Seattle player Golden Tate and his coach actually give an honest opinion and admit that the refs likely got the call wrong, they would still have the win reguardless, but they would then also have had the respect of the public as well as the other teams for at least being honest about what happened.

That would be even more disastrous. Probably the best thing the league can do is address it (as an error) and keep on working on a deal with the new refs.

In the end the Packers will be alright. Sucks they had to take a loss. But it is what it is at this point.

Agreed. These guys don't have a lot of experience with the NFL rule book. They're interpretations of the rules are going to be different than that of the seasoned vets. This doesn't explain the really bad calls. But these guys are trying their best.

And to be fair to them. The first three weeks have had some extremely odd plays to call and games to ref. The Titans-Lions game had like three fumbles on one down and the hail mary pass in Seattle are just two examples.

The NFL is going to address the Hail Mary pass some time today. http://www.nfl.com/n...-mary-call-tues

No word if they'll say anything about the overall officiating but I doubt it. They appear strongly committed to this lockout. Fans boycotting won't do any good (for every unhappy Packer fan there's probably a similar number of Seahawks who saw no problem with it.)

Coaches and players seem unhappy but they've been barred from speaking about it publicly. Mike McCarthy was one unhappy camper last night and, if he complains about it, it will be a private affair to GB management and we'll never know.

Like PuRock said.."it is what it is"...we may have to just deal with it.

actualy the call was correct , nfl rules , simultaneouse possession in the endzone goes to the receiving offensive player
Tate never possessed the ball. He draped his arm around the Packer player after the ball had already been intercepted. The call was dead wrong.

Good points !

The bad call last night was especially bad, because a review of the replay clearly shows it was not a "simultaneous" catch, but rather that the Green Bay player had caught it and had it pinned to his chest and the Seattle player merely had a hand on it trying to get it away.

The fact that 2 different refs made 2 different calls almost at the same time should have told them something.

Even the regular refs are not perfect, but that call last night should have been reversed after they reviewed the replay.

But again, the replacement refs are being asked to preform at a level they are not ready for, but I agree that some of the really bad calls are too obvious to not have been reversed.

Good point, but I would hope that if the Ravens won a game like the Seahawks did last night because of an obvious bad call that most of us Ravens fans would be honest enough to admit it was a bad call (even though we would still be glad to get the win and figure that we had bad calls go against us in the past so it happens both ways, but I would still prefer to win based solely on preformance and not because of a bad call that went in our favor)

Mike McCarthy exercised amazing restraint so did Aaron Rodgers at their press conferences.
Yeah, Mrs. McCarthy probably called him and said they needed a new dinette set and to make sure that he didn't get fined.

........from that link you mentioned it included the following - (start of quote)

"Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 5 of the NFL rulebook discusses a simultaneous catch.

"If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control," the rule states.

That strongly indicates Jennings should have been awarded an interception. Tate never seemed to truly gain joint control. A little known part of the rule explains why it wasn't overturned.

The rulebook also states when a simultaneous catch is ruled, you can't review who made the catch. You can only review if it was complete or incomplete."

(end of quote)

That seems to be a bad rule that you can't review who made the catch, because what happened last night shows that the refs can get that wrong, but that rule keeps that wrong call from being reversed !

I had already promised my still-recovering-from-a-stroke mother than I would come out and watch the Ravens-Browns game. She has become a Ravens fan somewhat due to me and I know she seems pretty excited about getting to watch the game with me since she keeps asking whether I'll still be coming out, so I'm not breaking that promise. But here is another promise I won't break: I'm done watching the games period after Thursday, I'm done giving nfl.com any of my traffic, until the regular refs are back. The ONLY way things are going to change is if the owners and their little sycophant Goodell notice a change in their wallets due to all of this, otherwise they could care less if we continue watching and showing up to the games.

Just to finish most of my thoughts, I'm only one person, but I can't in good consciousness give any support to the league after what I witnessed last night. I understand the rules, due to the call on the field the only thing that is reviewable is whether it was a TD catch, not who had possession and there was really nothing definitive to prove it wasn't in the replay the officials have. But that isn't even the point here, its that the regular refs would have all gathered around and confered on the best call to agree upon before giving a signal, especially with it being the game deciding play, instead of just having 2 of the line judges look at eachother for a split second then simultaneously throw up conflicting hand signals. THAT is what did it for me. I know the regular refs make bad calls, really not much less than what we've seen from the replacements. But it just demonstrates to me how disorganized each crew really is right now and their blatantly obvious disorganization resulted in ONE guy (not even the head official for the game) making a snap decision that literally stole the game from one of the teams. No one is truly blaming these guys for the positions they are in, but it is downright laughable what it is doing to the league's image. I could go on with some other thoughts, but I'm getting sick of even typing about this joke of officiating that is helping make the NFL itself a joke.

NFL Statement, pretty long so just highlighting a little of what they said.

The only way that a quick resolution will happen if the "$$Bottom Line$$ is impacted... Otherwise be prepared for anything from the officiating circus that Goodell is running.

Well, they pretty much admitted a bad non-call (that should have been called) cost the Packers a win.

So you have 2 different things that should have gave the Packers the win - the "non call" on offensive pass interference that should have been called, and the bad call that should have been called an interception rather than a touchdown.

I heard one of the commentators say on a talk show after the game that someone said something along the lines of - "the quarterback threw an interception to win the game" (that is likely not an exact quote but something like that :-)

Can we go from Thursday thru Monday without watching an NFL football game?
I'm willing to boycott watching football until the NFL comes to an agreement with the referees. I mean, the Ravens statdium crowd said it best: this is some b--ls--t. We are not watching real football because the officiating is as important as any other aspect of the game. But the ratings are off the chain this year because people are watching to see what the replacements are gonna mess up next. That will not motivate the NFL to remedy the situation. So whadda ya say?

On the NFL site a fan named "backdpack" had this suggestion:
Boycotting "doesn't mean that we can't support our team. All monies received by any team, at their facility, go directly to the team. No percentage of that money [goes] into the general fund.
Also, we can still listen to the game on the radio. Many people actually turn down the volume on the television while watching the game in order to listen [to their local announcers]."

South Park just ripped on the refs and how the NFL is becoming more and more soft and also how Goodell is saying there's no conclusive evidence to connect football and concussions. If you haven't seen the Sarcastiball episode, go on and check it out. It shed light on everything I've been saying ever since Chad JOHNSON became too weak to sustain a hit from the best Line Backer in the league.
