Through 3 games, the Baltimore Ravens rank as follows:

Offense
  • 4th in yards gained
  • 2nd in points scored (only 1 point under the 1st ranked Redskins)
Defense
  • 27th in yards allowed
  • 15th in points allowed
Not very Ravens-esque seeing the offense ranked near the very top and the defense ranked near the bottom.

Playing the Browns will help right the ship.

It's still early in the season. We had a lot of roster changes along with a new Defensive Coordinator so things will change on the defensive side. We have a lot of younger players taking over positions filled by veterans, Kruger, Upshaw, McPhee just to name a few.

Also the refereeing is a factor albeit a smaller one.

I'm currently working on a post (or thread, for that matter) that goes into detail about how, in the "classical"-sense, dominating defenses are a thing of the past. Plus, stats don't tell the story, plain-and-simple. That's especially the case when it comes to yards. I mean, just look at the Patriots, last year: At the bottom of the league when it came to yards allowed, but about mid-pack when it came to points allowed. That, alone, ticked me off when Patriots fans ignored Joe Flacco outplaying Tom Brady in last season's AFC Championship Game, simply because of their yardage allowed during the regular season (even though Flacco played a perfect game of "smart football" against a top defense when the Ravens faced the Texans, a week earlier).

Also, to go further into detail, a lot of these "stats" are gained during garbage time. Just yesterday, the Bears were barely beating the Rams, 10-6, at the end of the 3rd quarter. However, the final score was 23-6. Does that mean their offense "dominated" the Rams defense, yesterday? Heck, no!

To cap it off, the pattern is that a top-ranked offense seems to have a bottom-ranked defense, in recent years. Why? Maybe because of all those points scored, the defense gets fatigued, tired and remains on the field for a while?

Once again, I'm working on that piece, so I'll go further into detail about this, later. But, still, once T-Sizzle comes back, I figure the Ravens defense will be back in the top-5 in points allowed and maybe in the 10th-to-15th range in yards allowed, come the end of the season.

We have the Browns twice. I will be shocked if they score a field goal let alone a TD. I see them getting shutdown like a 1985 Macintosh without a cord. The defense should have a field day Thursday.

Our offense has become quicker but the cost of that is a weakened defense. I think our defense needs to be quicker and with more endurance. I think the great problem we have is our defense gets tired from the offense being so quick.

We will be on the top 5 and top 10 in points scored and yards allowed at the end of the year. When we get Suggs back it will really make a difference. Book it.

Lack of a pass rush was huge last night...Brady had way too much time to throw and picked his targets at will.Hurry back Sizzle.

Whatever gets the wins! It is wierd though. I think that if it was in a game situation and it was our offense vs our defense, I would feel more confident in our O. Never ever have I felt this way before.

I don't care as long at least one unit is ranked in the top 5. However, I much rather see us develop into a top 5 offense and regress defensively, rather than stay average on offense and be great on defense.
Having a great offense is a new development and hopefully is here to stay, our defense on the other hand has always been great and I am confident, that we can get back to where we were last season. Especially with Suggs hopefully returning.

I saw this trend coming to an extent, but i also thought our defense would be better. Its still a small sample size, but the nonexistent pass-rush is concerning. If we can get Suggs back it will be a huge boost. Right now Ngata and Ellerbe are our best pass rushers.

I've said before that this year the offense will have to carry the defense in 2012. Not sure the reason why but the Ravens defense is going to finish somewhere in the middle (10 -20 in rankings). Doesn't mean the Ravens are not going to win games, just means that Flacco and Rice will need to score often.

it is so frustrating how pees doesn't use our personnel specifically our corners right. that is my biggest complaint with him.

Now if this were the case. Bryan Mattison would somehow find his way onto the Ravens Roster.

I really just think its personnel. No one has stepped up without Suggs. We have to blitz to get pressure.

Agreed. Brady had all day to throw the ball.

Disagree, Brady was throwing the ball in some cases in less than 1.5 seconds , it's a mattison defense . Play prevent . Can't stand it

It's still early, give the D a little time. They've gone up against some high powered offenses with some new moving parts

Not too impressed with Pees right now. Anyone know why Belicheat cut him? Granted we have played some very good offensive teams to start our season off but man we are getting gashed.

Bengals
Eagles
Pats

I would argue those are all top 10 offenses by season's end.

At any rate, I am not a big fan of stats because there are too many factors in a game like football. I just go by what I see and like others have already stated a lack of pass rush. I like blitzing corners and all but I think we do it too much. The reason being is that we are having trouble getting pressure so we send out corners.

I do think that guys like Upshaw and Ellerbe have been looking good. Even McPhee and Ngata as usual but we are obviously missing Suggs. No question
