Harbaugh, no more 4th downs for you!

44 posts in this topic

what was really dumb was Cam's trying to be cute with McKinnie at fullback only to shift him to the extra tackle/TE while Leach actually does get to back to his spot at FB behind flacco. All this 'fakery' took time away for flacco's reading the D and the line's making adjustments. And as if the pat's D didn't already know, we ran to the heavy side where mckinne was, and leach motioned that way before the snap anyway! and it wasn't even a counter play. everything we did that play told the D exactly what was coming. that's Cam's fault. And maybe Harbaugh is responsible for putting up with this crap for so long

Because Pierce is better in short yardage situations than Rice

Based on what?

I didn't have a problem with the 4th down call, but when I heard extra lineman was in I figured Ray Rice would go unnoticed up to the point of gaining 5 yards behind a massive blocker, but then the play happened and it was Rookie Pierce handling the ball in this critical moment.....

Early in the game Pierce had a couple nice runs it seemed like he had more yards than the 17 he finished with.....

I wouldn't have been opposed to going for 4th and 1 on NE 47 on the very first drive for us, because we had great field position already, the crowd was rocking the Defense was all over Brady in that opening series, I felt that on the opposite side of the 50 if we had went for it momentum would have really carried us...

After the punt I thought about it and said wait we probably would have did some crazy Pass play, instead of Rice run or flacco dive for the yard so good call lol

If they really wanted to call a run in that situation, why not involve Rice? I didn't understand why Pierce was in the game then.

Because when we pay millions of dollars to keep a pro bowl running back, we do the stupid thing. Get the ball out of Joes hands and put it into Rays. He's our best weapon. Period

I didn't have an issue with going for it. We have a rookie kicker and the FG was not a gimme no matter how you want to define it. Let's just say we choose to kick and Tucker misses. Then, we need him later to kick the game winner and that miss is sitting in the back of his head. It was the play call for that 4th down that I question, not the decision to go for it.

Had I been the head coach, I would gone ahead and tried for the 3 points. That said, I still liked the call, had we made it that was even less time for Brady and co. to work with late in the game to play ball control. Its all in the rear view now to me though.

based on ray saying he's 210lbs and pierce is 230lbs so with a slightly better chance to pound it through

Based on Rice usually going down on first contact. He doesn't have a good history in 3rd and short situations.

Good call, bad play.

You don't put the game on a rookie kicker from 50 yards out when you've got 8 minutes left. If you convert, then you put the kicker in a more manageable position for a game-winner. If you don't convert, then you trust your defense to do its job at a distance equivalent to a good special teams return by the opponent.

This is what I was trying to convey in my original post, but you stated it better. You don't put the game on Tucker, but you really don't wanna give it up there voluntarily so you hope that you can convert it. I'm not sure why Bernard Pierce was in there and I'm not sure why we had that jumbo package either. Leave it as a straight I-formation and let Joe be the judge of what we need to actually do there. Maybe we go I and the Patsies don't know what we're gonna do. It looks like a straight forward run there but Rice could've run outta da backfield and gotten a little screen going, or maybe Joe throws an intermediate pass to Jacoby or Boldin or something. We limited ourselves with the actual playcall and that's why we failed. Going for it wasn't a bad call in and of itself.
