That is what drives me insane. He's one of those players where his head tells him that he's a beast and he talks such a game on the field. It will cost us eventually, its just a matter when.

I would cut him some slack if I could see some evidence of decent coverage skills. Yesterday he was always a step behind the receivers, never knew where the ball was, had to initiate contact after 5 yards just to keep up with WR cuts. He is constantly getting burned which is putting an X on his back.
Not to mention not even turning around to locate the ball.

As I thought. Cary and jimmy are press man corners and yet we refuse to do it. That's scheme. Cary isn't good on space. Play man to man on the outside.

Guess what, it will help the d line get pressure too
cnat play bump and run with no pass rush. 80 yard td waiting to happen.

Please do not make up Webb as an excuse. I understand Pees and the lack of pass rush though.
Sure I expect Cary and Smith (only thrown to a couple times) to get picked on, but Cary should not get burned.
Let's see. Here are Cary's faults:
* Hothheaded, could cost us, and Cary can't even back up his chatter.
* Doesn't turn around to locate the ball. I mean seriously.
* Slow. He's always a step behind the receiver.
* Brick hands. He never has, never will catch an interception that counts.
Conclusion: Of the 396 yards we gave the Pats, Cary accounted for 121 yards. Case closed.

I agree on everything but its almost 400 not 500.

So out of the 396 we gave up 319 yards passing. If Cary did account for 121 yards, then that means that means that Cary accounted for 37.9% of the yards allowed by our passing defense.

That's sickening.

I watched the same game as everyone else, and I too was furious watching Brady pick Williams apart. After calming down and just thankful for the win, I have come to the conclusion that Dean Pees is the problem. We all saw Cary play last year and he was awesome. In fact he was so good, that our number one draft pick couldn't crack the starting lineup when he returned from injury. The defensive schemes that the Ravens have played this year under Pees are absolutely awful. Maybe he is trying to compensate for the lack of pass rush due to the loss of Suggs, and Johnson, by playing the dbs soft so as not to get beat deep. Whatever the reason, it is clear that Harbs has made a huge mistake with Pees. Remember, Bellichick dumped him for a reason. Where are the stunts and blitzes this year? I'm just sayin.
Bellichick didn't dump him. Pees declined to sign a contract extension to be NE's D-Coordinator so he could come coach here as a position coach.

Carey Williams needs to ride the bench . It may have been one of the worst
cornerback performances by a Raven in recent memory
I see what you did there but Pees left the Patriots defense with it being one of the top dogs in the league. He did a good job in NE.

They were mediocre during his last season, something else would have to be going on for a coach to take less money and a lower position. It also doesn't change the fact that it he does not fit the Ravens defense from a schematic standpoint. Seymour and that line could generate pressure on the four man rushes. This year the Ravens cannot. When one of your corners is getting eaten alive you have to account for it by adjusting the scheme, and both of the Ravens coordinators on both sides of the ball seem completely incapable of adjusting to deficiencies presented in the team.
I agree that the players aren't being utilized correctly. Philly had the same issues last year when they made Nnamdi play zone coverage. Pees did however start bringing blitzes at the end of the game Sunday and Brady started getting happy feet in the pocket. It's only week 3 and Pees is still learning about what works and what doesn't work and what he has in his players. After seeing the improved success with blitzing I'm optimistic that he'll game plan differently for Cleveland and beyond. It's still early. Lets put the pitchforks and torches away until the bye...

Not a Cary apologists or detractor but why is he not in press coverage more? Is it the defense Pees is calling or is it that Brady is that good? If he's trying to make a case for a bigger paycheck with us or someone else it's not working out real well after week 3 that's for sure. Think a lot of folks will be watching how he performs against Weeden this Thursday.
I'm the same way. I thought Cary performed well last year with his aggressive and physical play style. He would abuse people at the line last year and now he gives 8-10 yard cushions. While he's not allowing the big play per say he's being picked apart for 10 yards here and 8 yards there and it starts to add up. I'd have to think it's in the game plan for him to play off his man but it's obviously not working. For me to make a fair assessment of him he has to be playing his game. But like somebody above said, playing press man without an effective pass rush is just asking to be beat for a deep bomb. In my honest opinion it all comes back to the pass rush and the effectiveness of the front 7. If the pass rush is there the corners can be much more physical at the line. I'm hoping Suggs really does come back week 7 and can help create the pass rush we've been lacking the last 3 weeks. It's apparent that Ngata can't do it alone.

Anyone watch "2nd Half Hightlights vs. Patriots"? At about 1:50, you see Teryl Austin talking with Cary and Jimmy. It's interesting to hear that discussion. Cary's saying that the Patriots are pushing off all the time, Jimmy tells Cary to grab him right back because the ref's aren't calling it.

Obviously I don't have the NFL 22 film, but it'd be interesting how true all of that is/was on some plays.

Also, at 3:15, Teryl Austin tells Jimmy to go ahead and press (after he asks). Said Cary could do the same thing. I know the Patriots stopped scoring at that point. Might this be a change for the corners?

Definitely agree with that. 869 yards(!) passing against our defense through 3 weeks and I suspect its not all on Williams. Its always been a team defense with us and the lack of pass rush does not help. Gonna re-watch the game on my DVR; hope Sizzle returns healthy AND effective
Watch the 2nd half highlights from 1 Winning Drive. Jimmy asked Teryl Austin if they were allowed to "press them" now (at the 3:18 mark). And Teryl gave them the green light since we need a 3 and out. It was definitely the game plan for the corners to play off their men.

Just watched and I agree you can clearly hear Teryl Austin say "at this point in the circus we gotta play up tight" Subjective? maybe but it sounds like that was the game plan earlier.

I've been reading a lot of us saying that Dean Pees has been having Cary play 5-10 yards off his man... I just re watched that game and from what I can tell it's been the direct opposite. Williams has started most of the plays right in the receivers faces. He just got murdered by double moves.

Watch carefully. He starts as if he's in press, but a second before the snap be backs off
what Ben said below, I bet that snap isn't for another three seconds. He always starts up, then drops way back to at least 5 yards sometimes 10 and not even in the picture at the time of the snap. Also read the posts above, they had to ask to press in the 4th qtr and where told yes because we need a stop.

So let me get this straight. You need a stop so let your corners press, so that's proof he felt we have a better chance of a stop when they press. So what's the gameplay for the other 45 minutes, let them score by playing off?
