Bazooka Joe

Deonte Thompson Is the KR

I'm a fan of Deonte like most people, but Jacoby is slightly better at returning and Doss is a better WR.

The fact that Doss has made catches against 1st and 2nd teamers in PS as well as a few catches against 1st teamers in the regular season, while Deonte has had all of his catches against 3rd and 4th stringers in PS except one catch at the end of the Bengals game with extremely soft coverage by Pacman, should tell you everything about who's better right now.

Having said that, I don't want to sound like I'm ripping DT because like I said, I'm a fan of his as well. Who wouldn't be, based on what we've seen so far?

Really? One guy we are paying 3.5 Million a year as a WR3? Dont think so. We brought him in for his returns, and as you saw last week.........that is why.

He is playing for the same reason Doss is not starting over Boldin.
He can share the return duties with Jacoby ,and add a dimension to a struggling offense.

We hardly ever go 4 WR anyway because Pitta and Rice are constantly on the field in passing situations.
But we need to, to spread the defense out. Use our speed to counter their power. Deonte is a 4.2 or 4.3 guy that has demonstrated during the preseason that he is a playmaker.

I agree, more 4/5 WR sets to spread out defenses. Joe just needs to learn to play QB and we will be golden. He is in all likleyhood not smart enough to be a great QB.
A few catches against 1st stringers in your 2nd season? The guy had 0 catches for us in 2011. I know he has great hands, but we need more speed in this offense. Nobody is getting open. The play calling is terrible. DT can change that a little. It would be he-- on a defense to cover guys in Jacoby, Torrey, and Thompson.

I love his speed, he just needs to show consistency before he lines up on offense. I would take either of the two back there honestly.

But being able to run lightning fast in a straight line doesn't necessarily translate into success in the NFL. Plus we already have Torrey and Jacoby. How many more deep threats do we need? We need help with the tough catches over the middle and in coverage. We need another Boldin if anything. There are other uncertainties with DT also. We don't know if his hands are as good as Dosses. We don't know if he will be able to beat press coverage either.

Doss only had zero catches last year because he hardly saw any snaps. More snaps could very well have equated to a few catches. He's coming along nicely this year, as he's slowly working his way into this offense more and more. Deonte will need more time.

Doss is fast though. I dont know where the idea that he is slow like Boldin comes from. He ran a 4.5 at the combine while he was still dealing with a hernia. I have nothing against Thompson, but he is a rookie WR. It normally takes time to adjust to the NFL level especially when you have some issues coming in. Doss has been there for a year already and has made the adjustments to improve his game. I'm not sure what you are trying to take away from him considering in his limited snaps he has been productive.

That goes back to the protection issues though. If we go 4 or 5 wr we can't have Rice/Pitta come in the split backs for extra protection.
I agree with this. During blowout games like in Houston we need to see what our rookies have in the tank. They can't learn the game from the bench. Activating him for a few games that we are expected to blow teams out in might not be a bad idea. Worst case scenario we get another promising receiver with major speed.
Do you think that we will need extra protection with Joe hitting these guys for chunks at a time?
Honestly i would just like to see some of the young guys play more, were games and the outcome have already been decided. Doss, Deonte, Rainey and definitely Pierce have shown flashes already. I'm ready for the next generation to begin.
