I don't see why we wan't to tire our #1 CB out and risk injury on returning punts. I hope Harbs knows what he's doing.

Are you serious? I know Rainey look good in preseason but to even think that Doss should be gone instead of Rainey seems to be really overboard. Rainey would most likely have not seen any playing time at all on offense and he isnt good on special teams coverage.Rainey wasnt even the primary back up running back
Neither would Doss. As you saw last year and this year. While I don't think he should of made the team to begin with, at this point I am talking about why activate him.

If you leave Allen on PS, activate Rainey and Laquan (laquan plays specials), you have a guy that can spell Rice to keep him fresh for the rest of the season and a guy in Williams who can come in as a 4th or 5th WR and Williams has done kick returns for us before.

We have a guy to spell Rice. His name is Bernard Pierce.

We have Torrey, Boldin, Jacoby, Deonte. Now what's your point of having Doss active? Nice post. +1

Doss makes the roster because he's our only underneath receiver not named Anquin Boldin.

This. If Q should turn an ankle or something, Doss takes the field.

My only real complaint about this game was Webb back as a return specialist. With the losses to the Ravens pass rush this team can't afford to lose such an important cog in the backfield.

A few years ago he blew out his knee on special teams
Returning a kick that he didn't have to. We were blowing Chicago out

My point is he is a player that was part of the gameplan. The coaches clearly have faith in him as part of our new look offense. We didnt have to go 4 or 5 wide in this game, but the option is there and Doss has proven to be a reliable pass-catcher.

Fans underrate versatility. It's important to pick up the tough over the middle yards, and apart from Boldin Doss is our only guy who can do that.

I'd kill to have a Dwayne Bowe or Demaryius Thomas on the field though.

I would have to agree with others that they probably trust Webb the most back there. That said, I agree with the OP, Webb is too important to the defense to be doing punts returns on a regular basis. Jones, Thompson, Jackson, and Williams all have punt return ability, Doss was a kick returner at Indiana, dunno about punts though. I guess the point is there are pletty of other options without risking Webb to a special teams injury.

Same thing with Webb a few years ago. When the punt is deep in our own territory, you go with the sure hands over the young guy.

Rosburg/Harbs have always done this. Why is this so surprising to people? People just want to find something to complain about

I know that, I've said that, but why make him active?!

In case Boldin gets dinged up, Doss comes in. If torrey gets dinged Jones becomes number two and then Thomas or Williams. But in the slot it's just Boldin and Doss, that's it.

I was once again thinking this.
May as well put Reed back there too while you're at it.
Too much defensive value in these two guys to allow special team scrubs the oppurtunity to take a crack at.

If Boldin goes down we run more 2 TE sets, Doss didn't come in last year when we needed him. I think our coaches , and this is my opinion, would see a drop off in talent from Boldin to Doss obviously, and wouldn't look to put him in the game at that time. They would put Ed or Dennis over there. Long term injury he would definitely fill in but I don't see point of activating him for games when his only Role is if Boldin goes down, there are better receiving options on this team

You have a valid point and we should agree to disagree :). I like doss though, I think he'll replace boldin next year.

Agreed. I don't hate Doss, just don't think he should be active is all.

Flock, Webb is still returning punts because we want to get him hurt. We don't need him that badly at cornerback. :34853_shakehead:

The same way the Cardinals don't need Patrick Peterson? Or the Cowboys don't need Dez Bryant? Or the Falcons and Cowboys didn't need Deion?

Numerous key players around the league return punts and have done so for a long time. No ones wants to see them get hurt, but the coaches put them out there for legitimate reasons.

They also didnt have a ACL tear a year ago doing it. While he is a good returner he is no charles woodson or hester. The chance of him breaking one over one of our other returners is no where near the risk-reward of him getting injured and our Best corner going down. Its not worth it.

Technically, he was hurt two years ago and he was gunning on a punt, not returning it.

Either way, I don't appreciate Webb returning kicks. I'd rather see Jacoby, Williams, or Thompson (if he can) back there.

Like b said, he tore his ACL in 2010 as a gunner. He may not be Woodson (in his prime) or Hester, but he's dangerous enough to warrant returning punts on a "case-to-case" basis. It's not that big a deal.
