uhh why is Webb still returning punts

52 posts in this topic

I think he's out there on punts that have little to no chance of garnering a return because he isnt going to fumble and will make the right decision. Full trust in Webb, just like we used to see Ed return punts every now and then.

John Harbaugh loves to give us the 'ol trollface every now and then.
He had that punt returned for a TD stolen from him in the playoffs against Pitt two seasons back. He has skillz.

Big play ability.

Wish we put Jacoby back there permanently...or Rainey.... :eyes:
My mom called me during the game and asked why Rainey wasn't playing in garbage time. I told her that he had been released today and she absolutely lost it. You know it's a bad decision when my mom who knows next to diddly poo about football is upset about a guy being cut. That dude has talent.

Webb has never taken a big hit as a punt returner. They usually don't, because they call for a fair catch if they think they're gonna get pummeled. Ajax will have the role soon enough. He was out with an illness.

I know he has skills as a punt-returner, I never said otherwise, but we didnt pay him 50M to fill that role. He'll be back there at times but I think Jones will get the majority of return chances. Webb is more trust-worthy at this point and who knows, he might have lobbied coach to get out there.
If that's the case Harbs needs to put his foot down. But I'm sure the ST coach comes out of him in those situations and he can't help himself. I must say Deonte looked good out there on kickoff returns (he does need to make better decisions when it comes to knowing when to just take the touchback though).

Just remember: He was let go for Tandon Doss to sit on the bench and not contribute at all on specials :)

Horrible decision. Rather have him and Laquan on the team than Doss and Allen.

So Rainey can sit on the bench and do nothing? Doss is a piece of the future whether you want to admit it or not. At least Allen made some plays out there on ST and in the running game.
For real. Doss is the answer to Boldin's imminent departure.

Rainey can spell Rice and Pierce, return punts or kicks. Doss is a piece of the future? Talk is cheap. Thompson is our number 4.

Yes, Doss is a piece for the future. So is Thompson. Jones will likely be gone after this year, and possibly Boldin if we need to make some cap space.

We dont need a 3rd RB who can only help out in ST by returning. We have returners. We needed guys who can cover and block like Allen.

You just enjoy complaining huh? Lol. Our coaches put the best men on the field and we dominated this game because of it.

Shout to the "high character" o-line Harbs put together as well.

What am I complaining about? I just don't see a point in activating Doss...and our coaches never put him on the field, that's my point. Thompson, who is technically farther down on the depth chart, got more looks them him because he is more versatile.

Offensive line played well, was very happy with Harewood in there and with McKinnie on bench. Just need Gino to step up by December (or sooner, Wilfork is going to eat Birk's lunch on the 23rd).

And yeah, that line was chock full of "High character"..

And can you honestly say that you would rather have Doss active over Laquan whom actually plays ST. To make the roster is one thing, but to be active on game day over guys like Bajema, Laquan and Hall doesn't make sense for a guy who who doesn't bring anything to the table until Anquan gets injured.

What's the difference between Rainey sitting on the bench and Doss sitting on the bench? There isnt one. You just hate Doss for no apparent reason.

Wow, great response!

I just SAID he could do PR/KR and Spell Rice and Pierce. Keep them fresh.

I don't hate anyone so I don't appreciate your childish retort. I just think it isn't wise to activate a player who doesn't contribute one bit unless Boldin gets injured AND even in the scenario, he still probably wouldn't find the field because it would be Torrey, Jacoby and Deonte with the Tight Ends.

I don't want to see him back there again for a long time. Not worth having him get injured, especially while Jimmy and Cary and still developing.

Our coaches may have activated him because they planned on using him. I'm sure their gameplan changed with how we were dominating on offense from the get.

Agreed. But injury is apart of the game, just how it is apart of life. Can't treat these guys like china dolls, they are men.

Do I mind him going back there? No, but I rather the 3rd WR do it than the number 1 CB.

Glad we got to rest our starters in this onslaught by the way.

I dunno, for me It's just hard to believe that would be the case since the guy didn't do anything last year or anything special in Training Camp. Like I've said before, he is Anquan's back up, that's what he brings to the team.

I would love for him to prove me wrong but we have 4 capable WR's, 2 Tight Ends and a Rb or two who are in the pecking order before him.

My only real complaint about this game was Webb back as a return specialist. With the losses to the Ravens pass rush this team can't afford to lose such an important cog in the backfield.

A few years ago he blew out his knee on special teams....

It's not a wise decision.

Are you serious? I know Rainey look good in preseason but to even think that Doss should be gone instead of Rainey seems to be really overboard. Rainey would most likely have not seen any playing time at all on offense and he isnt good on special teams coverage.Rainey wasnt even the primary back up running back
