Blackbirds Rule

Would you take Garrard as a backup?

Our backups are weak. Taylor does not look like he has NFL skills. Dixon does, plus he's slightly experienced, but the Steelers giving up on a young talent is telling.

The doom+gloomers who believe that the season would be lost if Flacco were to go down are ignoring history - from Earl Morall coming off the bench to replace the injured Johnny U to guide the Baltimore Colts to championships, to T.J. Yates astonishing performance for the Texans last season, keeping that team within a whisker of the AFC Championship game.

Garrard is easily the best talent available as a back-up. How many others are available who have playoff experience? If Flacco is signed (freeing up cap space) and Garrard passes the physical, signing him as the backup QB should be a serious consideration.

i don't see why not. those who hope on taylor are being too optimistic. i would have 0 confidence of having taylor come in mid game. people are acting as if garrard would be our starter or something. i would take him until we get another in the draft next year.

Completely agree - our backups are weak. Hasn't anyone learned from Indy last year? Peyton went down, and a playoff caliber team self-destructed. In Houston, a playoff caliber team lost its QB, and their capable backup saved the season - Yates. Brady got knocked out for the season in week one a few years back, and Matt Cassell saved their season.

We have an excellent team - there's no use playing Russian Roulette with the season by losing our starter. We have so much quality that, even with a backup, we could win - as long as he's somewhat capable. When Roethlisberger was suspended 4 games, they went 3-1 with capable backups.

And I'm not sure Tyrod Taylor is that guy - a capable backup. In the preseason, TT was 8-17 vs Atlanta for only 60 yards, and 8 for 22 for 65 yards against Detroit. 16 for 39 for 120 yards, less than 4 YPA. I don't think he's capable of leading the team to the playoffs, so why risk a Super Bowl contending team's chances, because you won't bring in one player?

Not saying Garrard necessarily, but someone capable - TT hasn't proven he's that guy yet, IMO.

This is an unknown....TT is still unknown, he might beable to have a tebow effect and just win games....plus Harbs is big on the guy and says he practices well, i dont see nobody out worth getting, if flacco did get hurt i would feel even more scared if we had garrard because he has become injured prone now, vince young hasnt been the same since leaving the titans, i like sage rosenfels who got cut by the vikings but he is close to his retirement..

no matter what its best to keep our own guys or make a trade for kirk cousins from the skins lol

I think we should keep TT and develop him - but a veteran for emergencies might be wise. Not sure who's all out there, but someone like Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, someone with some experience could potentially save the day, in case of a disaster. Yes, Flacco has been incredibly consistently healthy, but one shot is all it takes.

Wise yeah sure...one shot yeah and can send us back to the stone age but then again we would just be a run first team and be like the broncos last year, which i think we can still win games like that since we have been before we got flacco and with TT he can run if the play breaks down and pretty soon teams would have to spy on him which takes away a man in coverage which can make his throws alot easier so i think we could be fine....scamblers have a way of stealling games in this league

Tyrod is good enough as the backup, otherwise he wouldn't still be here. Preseason is where the team tries new things out. What we saw a lot of probably are things Tyrod has worked on but isn't comfortable with, hence the inconsistency. They have a gameplan that will better cater to Tyrod should Joe go down, and I think if the FO is happy with Tyrod as the backup now, we all should be.
