I thought it could be him to but the FO doesn't like to give on draft picks that soon.
i know thats true but gorrer outplayed brown and was ahead of chykie on the depth chart this doesnt make sense to cut our 5th best corner when we have 7 and gorrer and brown came out the same year i think

He was active for 11 games last year.

Wow. Really? Well, there goes that hope.

Now I'm even more disappointed.

Yeah because we might have been able to get Brown on the PS.

I dont think you are allowed to cut a injured player, unless some settlement is reached
You can waive/injured them which puts them on waivers. If they go unclaimed the team can chose to put them on IR if they want.

Danny was one of our better cover corners. I don't get this, I was hoping just in case Cary gets burned in some games this year he would get a chance to play. Kinda confused..

Not a fan of this move at all. Not only did Gorrer show promise in coverage this season, but he was solid last season as well. Apart from what we've seen for ourselves, his statistical output furthers the point. He allowed a completion percentage of a mere 38.5% and an average of just 8.8 yards per completion, both the best among our CB corps. Gorrer also added 4 PDs and gave up a passer rating of only 48.6. He even earned the second best coverage grade among our CBs per PFF. I understand that he accomplished this in a very limited amount of time, but it's not as if he took a step back this season. We had others who were more expendable. I hate beating a dead horse, but Sean Considine jumps out immediately. If we're bringing James Ihedigbo to be primarily a special teams contributor, I would hope that the reserve above him can be a factor in coverage and run defense. The last time Considine was healthy, that being 2010, he was targeted 22 times...he gave up 19 receptions. That says enough about what he brings to the table outside of the ST unit.

Plus Gorrer could play ST also.

Here's the reasoning. I believe Gorrer would have been a free agent after this season. Ihedigbo, Considine, and Brown are all better at ST. Gorrer's play is overrated by fans due to a few snaps but we dont get to see hours of practice that the coaches do.

Bummer. I think the entire fanbase collectively groaned when we heard Gorrer got cut instead of Considine.

I agree. I Didn't think of him getting cut.

Why did they cut Gorrer? I thought he did enough to warrant a roster spot last season, he's certainly good depth at the position. I don't understand this move.

Here's a list of stats from PFF for anyone interested, apart from the ones I've already listed in my previous post. I figure since I personally haven't seen Considine and Ihedigbo for myself, I assume someone else hasn't neither.

ST:

Defense:

Yeah, not a fan of this one. As some mentioned, our sample size of Gorrer was limited, but what I saw, I thought he was more than serviceable.

Gorrer reminded me a lot of the project Cary Williams was for several years before becoming the starting CB last year. Really bummed about this.

As upset as you guys are (I'm gonna miss Gorrer if he gets signed) there must've been reasons he was playing with the 3rd strings. We had serious CB depth but Gorrer must've offered the least. Ajax was more impressive than him during games and has more potential, and Brown has improved since last year. As others said, we were probably going to lose him next year. Unfortunate but I think the team made the right call here.

Although I was bummed, I'm sure the FO made the right choice. They've seen way more of Gorrer than any of us, I trust them.

Don't understand the Chykie hate I'm seeing in various threads pertaining to who should have made the roster, in the only extended playing time we've seen him as fans (2 seasons of preseason action) he's been a lot more good than bad, the upside is definitely there.

That said, gotta agree it should have been Considine and not Gorrer, it makes sense if you're going to sign another safety to release one of your backup safeties who impressed no one from an objective stand point this preseason and sustained back to back concusssions before the real season even started. Harbaugh's loyalty to "his" former guys gets old fast.

I think its obvious why we cut Gorrer and not Considine... We got the new guy to add depth at safety. Why would we cut a safety, to make room for a safety, when the goal is to improve depth at safety? We have solid depth at CB and could afford to release Gorrer. I mean before we added this dude, what depth did we have at safety? Nothing! But we had plenty at CB.

Normally, I agree that the point is to improve our depth at the position, since I assume your post was a semi-response to mine. Obviously we have to defer to the coaching staff since they see the guys in practice, but from a fan's standpoint Considine showed us in preseason that he is not a solid tackler and may be injury prone for the rest of the year (if he already has had two concussions, the probability of a third this season greatly increases). He and Ihdegibo would both serve more or less the same role: special teams "leader" and spot player in the defensive rotation. I'm about 95% sure that when I looked at the official roster on the main site when they had updated the 53 man roster, Gorrer was listed on the official roster as a "defensive back," not "cornerback." That generalized position leads me to believe he could provide safety depth in a pinch. Of course, it could just be website semantics as well, haha. Just my thoughts on it.
