Our front office knew he was damaged goods and unreliable. That's why they didn't want to have him playing LT. They felt they couldn't count on him.

To sign that man to a contract with any guarantees was a bone headed move for any FO! Congrats, Chargers, for being complete morons! Did you not see/hear what went on here in Baltimore?

It's amazing to me, Gaither is a real solid player at LT when he is healthy but he has just been injured so much that it's impossible for him to stay healthy anymore.

This isn't good news for the Chargers though. Who will be their Left Tackle with Gaither out?

I don't know, but it's only the begining of the season, I'm sure they'll have everything sorted out by November when they play Baltimore. :/

Apparently undrafted rookie Mike Harris has been named the starter by Norv. And I doubt the situation is resolved come November.

Here's an interesting article by Bill Barnwell on Grantland, called "The deals that every NFL franchise needs to avoid." There are 10 examples of foolish signings... and Gaither is a prime example of one:

(Read the rest of the article - it's quite humorous and illuminating):
The Refilled Health Meter

Type: Signing an injury-prone player to a long-term deal after a rare season of health.

Current NFL examples: Laurent Robinson, D'Qwell Jackson
Occasionally, players struggle with injuries for years at a time and suddenly get healthy. It happens, with Charles Woodson being a notable example. Most of the time, though, teams who sign a player with a limited track record of attendance after one notably healthy season get the injury-riddled guy as opposed to the healthy one. In this case, the Jaguars are paying Laurent Robinson like the guy who answered the bell every time in Dallas last season as opposed to the one who missed time with injuries during each of his four previous NFL seasons. They gave Robinson $13.8 million guaranteed — just over $1 million less than the Eagles had to give DeSean Jackson — to find out whether he can extend that healthy streak into 2012 and beyond.
The Browns made the same mistake with Jackson this year, giving a player who missed all of 2010 and one out of every three games as a pro a five-year, $42.5 million deal.

Undrafted Rookie? I guess they can get away with it in Week 1 playing against Oakland but I think Norv better plan Mike Harris playing the whole year.

Sanders' injuries weren't as 'mysterious', though

I posted a thread when he first got "injured". The guy is a bum no other way around it. He was healthy enough when he was playing for his job in the NFL. Now he got a contract it's back to same old Gaither.

Honestly, how does the Charger's general manager still have a job? That team has been hemorrhaging talent for several years now and it's only getting worse.

It's unfortunate. We could've gone 16-0 in 2010 if he was healthy. We had leads in every 4th quarter but gave them up because we failed to get first downs in at all our "run-the-clock-out" offense late in games and ended up putting our D on the spot. And to top it off, he's only healthy when it comes time to play Baltimore in San Diego and blow us out.
They take a digg on Flacco in that article under the "double down" contract explanation. They describe him as being, "occasionally awful."

Some are starting to speculate that Gaither's time in SD might be coming to an end. So much for the four year part of the contract. Still, its not a bad payday for Gaither who at least earned 9M no matter what.

The Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee cautions not to be surprised if LT Jared Gaither (back) doesn't play another game for the Chargers.[/background]
Gaither was carted off the field with dehydration in his first training camp practice since signing a new contract with $9 million in "true" guarantees. He complained of back spasms two days later and hasn't practiced since. The training staff is still scratching their heads after running a series of tests, including at least two MRIs. Still can't believe San Diego was dumb enough to give Gaither a contract, especially $9 million. AJ Smith should be fired for that.
