Brian Hoyer?

21 posts in this topic

For those of you with espn insider, I just read an interesting article that Brian Hoyer would be a possible fit. With all that money we saved from Cundiff, I think there is some room for this guy. Hoyer is a smart, accurate guy who has studied behind one of the best in the game. He will also have some good inside info for us whenever we play NE.

At this point (god forbid) if Flacco went down I would not trust Tyrod Taylor with the job. While Hoyer won't light up the stat sheet, he could certainly manage the game.

This signing just makes too much sense. Sure, it would take him some time to learn the offense, but with time we could be looking at a pretty solid backup.

Feel free to critique this move all you want. I usually just avoid the espn insider rumors since most of them are simply just RUMORS. This one, however, really got me thinking.

And Mike Kafka would be a nice fit too

Go Ravens, (and good job tonight O's)

I wouldn't hate the move but I wouldn't love it either. I feel like he'll get a better opportunity elsewhere, however.

Honestly...a back up qb is the least of my worries. I understand that its nice to have a backup that can perform, but this isnt the 2000 defense where we can plug in any qb and go to the superbowl. If flacco goes down...so does our season, id rather use that money to get a pass rusher or someone that is going to contribute right away

I dont really get why Pats fans, and seemingly the entire NFL for that matter, was so high on Hoyer as though he was the next Matt Cassel/Matt Flynn. I dont think he's that great of a QB. Im good with Tyrod.

i havent seen enough of him...to my knowledge he has been a 3stringer all his years in NE..the inside info is great but that doesnt mean we can stop it on game day

More or less, Brian Hoyer's "hype" was the results of being an understudy to Tom Brady, learning/developing in New England's system, and following a similar path that Matt Cassel took (before replacing Brady after his injury).

It's just one of those things: Hoyer was never "flashy", but, let's say, he had to come-in for Brady at some point, most likely he could of got the job done in New England, especially with their weapons. However, Ryan Mallet has a higher potential and surpassed Hoyer this preseason with his play, so Hoyer's release was inevitable.

That said, there's no need for the Baltimore Ravens to bring-in Brian Hoyer. For what? To be the back-up quarterback? As much as Tyrod Taylor isn't the "right" QB to relieve Joe Flacco, barring injury, at least he knows the offense. Signing Hoyer and dumping Taylor would go against what the Ravens spent the entire preseason doing, which was developing Tyrod and having him fight-off Curtis Painter for the #2 QB spot.

Oh, I thought, for some reason or another, that you were laughing at the fact that Brian Hoyer was even being compared to the likes of Matt Cassel and Matt Flynn. Hey, at least Cassel and Flynn have done something, where as Hoyer is merely just getting "hype", even though he has never done anything in the NFL.

Either way, the laughing is very suitable...

Honestly, if our team had wanted a "traditional" QB to back up Joe, they would have kept Painter. I don't see us having any interest in Hoyer.

Cassel and Flynn have also done nothing. One has been supplanted by a 3rd rounder and the other is a starter by default.

How do we know he'd do a better job than Tyrod?
Seneca Wallace is a more proven fit if we are looking for a better option behind Joe. If we signed him, we wouldn't have to worry about having just about zero offensive points like with Tyrod.
Still, I'm open to whatever the team thinks is best. I have a feeling they'll just keep Tyrod.

And of course I agree with you, but they earned big contracts, simply because they learned from the best in Brady and Rodgers. Cassel had one mediocre season, and Flynn had merely a few mediocre games,. Definitely nothing deserving of the money/expectations that were given them when they became free agents. That was my point.

I'm sorry, but I'd stay away from any former Patriots back-up quarterback. They're very much a product of the New England system and won't ever match the "potential" they had with the Pats weapons and coaching staff. Aforementioned Cassel is the prime example, the Chiefs have not gotten what they expected when they paid Matt after starting when Brady went down for the season.

Can Brian Hoyer replace Terrell Suggs? I'd sign him if he could. If he can play 3-4 OLB, set the edge, drop into coverage, and maybe rush the passer I will be happy to sign him.
